Is “joggers” twatty?

Alsocalledsophie · 02/04/2026 11:08

I recently posted about changing into joggers when I come home after work. Another poster pulled me and others up on the use of the word “joggers,” labelling it “twatty.” I’m surprised as I thought this was fairly standard language at this point 🤔

IABU: joggers is twatty
YANBU: joggers is standard language, definitely not twatty

Not really a term we use in Ireland so I would have just thought it sounds "Englishy" 😜

The irish dont jog?

facethemusical · 02/04/2026 12:53

Is joggies a combination of joggers and trackies? I've never heard it before. Not twatty though.

Dermatologically · 02/04/2026 12:53

You can be reasonably confident that whatever you post you'll piss off a mumsnetter one way or another. If you want to avoid anyone on here passing judgement then you'd have to stop posting altogether.

The irish dont jog?

They don’t refer to tracksuit bottoms as ‘joggers’.

The irish dont jog?

We don't use the term Joggers for tracksuit pants.......

LlynTegid · 02/04/2026 12:57

It's not the words that are the issue. It is that they encourage denial about weight gain and disincentivise doing something about it such as less snacking.

There is a section on Next Ireland for joggers.

As I would never wear that garment I have, thankfully, never needed to use the word.

Next is a British company, we know what the word refers to, it just isn't used here in everyday speech 💁

I heard Tom Allen recently and he used the word joggers....but said he would never wear them!
He does wear crocs in the garden though, apparently

Pulling anyone up on their use of language is twatty, but if I was going to, I think "twatty" is much more twatty than joggers, which sounds perfectly normal to me.

This. Lots of words have regional differences, there's no laws about what is correct. I'd not like being labelled "twatty".
(But I am now going to be calling my joggers "luxury bottoms"). 👖

HoneyNutCornflakesS · 02/04/2026 13:12

I called them jogging bottoms and my teens started laughing their heads off at me. So now it’s just joggers.

LeedsLoiner · 02/04/2026 13:14

Hoardasurass · 02/04/2026 11:12

You might get a raised eyebrow where I live but thats only because most people call them trackies or tracky bottoms if you want to be specific. But no its not twatty

Joggers are made from the same material as sweatshirts - cotton or a polycotton mix and are usually loose fitting whereas tracksuits are made from polyester, nylon or similar and are close fitting with zip closures at the ankles.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 02/04/2026 13:16

I wouldn’t let teens change my vocabulary (unless I was just plain wrong). What do they know?

TheKateColumbo · 02/04/2026 13:17

finestmushroom · 02/04/2026 12:20

Tracksuits are traditionally sets though - tops and bottoms you can buy together - hence the "suits" part of the word.

Joggers are just bottom parts.

Also- I dont see how "joggers" sound more childish than "trackies"- trackies sounds far more childish to me 🤷‍♀️

Edited

I bought my ‘trackies’ as a stand alone item.
My joggers came in a set with a matching top.

You get that Irish people do understand English terms when used on English clothing websites, right?

Tacohill · 02/04/2026 13:23

Some posters are absolutely batshit I’ve noticed.

Of course it’s a fine term to use.

I use the term sweats or sweat pants but I think some posters might have an aneurysm over my use of American lingo.

Weeelokthen · 02/04/2026 13:28

Guess I'm a bigger twat cos I call them joggies 😂

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 02/04/2026 13:53

The word is fine, the item not so fine.

Why keep the thread going by posting on it if you object so much? Dry your eyes.

I expressed an opinion. There's no need for you to be aggressive.

The kind of person who finds joggers twatty is the same kind of person who gets horrible offended at words like comfy or shudders if you say cardie.
You know.....a twat.😏

I don't particularly like the terms "comfy" or "cardie". . How does that make me a twat?

Yerroblemom1923 · 02/04/2026 14:06

I don't like it. But I don't like track suit bottoms unless worn for sport/exercise. I don't like that they're the new "lounge wear".

Trallala · 02/04/2026 14:12

I'm old enough to remember when a Jogging Suit was an exciting new thing compared to the stiff crimplene tracksuit (my first one was hot pink stretch towelling). ISTR the trousers were referred to as jogging bottoms (pants were underwear in my part of the world in ye olden days) so the evolution to "joggers" seems entirely normal and acceptable, and widely used by all the major retailers.

In my experience being so ignorant you don't know other people call things by different names is most definitely "twatty"

Fizbosshoes · 02/04/2026 14:20

Ive never heard the word comfie used for joggers.
I do quite a lot of sport (mostly running, I suppose easy runs could be jogging) but id never consider wearing my joggers for sport. (Too hot/heavy/bulky/impractical)
DS has some thin Nike "joggers" that are suitable for sport but they are a different fabric
