Will antisemitism ever be looked at and dealt with in the same way as Islamophobia is?

AIBU for thinking it won’t? Because it doesn’t seem to be the case in this country or my home country (Germany).

(I just googled because it didn’t seem right to have antisemitism in lower capitals, but apparently that is correct, as I thought)

Much love to the Jewish community, wherever they are.

Sorry, I meant ‘lower case’.

Can you give some examples of how it's not, OP?

I have no idea really.

Eskarina1 · 01/04/2026 15:47

I'm not sure what you mean. Antisemitism is terrible and should be dealt with but what examples of Islamaphobia being taken seriously would you like to see emulated for antisemitism?

These two crimes do not need to be pitted against each other. We do not need to accept racism towards anyone. Creating a x or y dynamic increases hate towards both groups.

It shouldn't be acceptable to spout nonsense about people being in a global conspiracy of evil because of their religion, it shouldn't be acceptable attack places of worship, it shouldn't be acceptable to harass individuals for their religion. But every time we frame it as one religion vs another, we are feeding hate and division.

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:49

Thank you both for your replies, but surely anyone who has eyes and ears can see that Jewish people are having a much harder time of it.

OP posts:
CatherinedeBourgh · 01/04/2026 15:50

Do you mean not at all or actively encouraged by politicians?

Because that is the only ways I'm seeing Islamophobia being dealt with in either the UK or Europe...

Ooihuko · 01/04/2026 15:50

Hmm, I feel like antisemitism is taken more seriously because of the ww2. Islamaphobia is against a religion, rather than race also means it seems to be taken less seriously.

I don't have any concrete examples but in the last 20 years that's how I've perceived these to be judged.

Having said that they are both awful and there should be no place for either in modern society

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:50

There are many members of the Jewish community who feel they have to hide their heritage.

No, not seeing it. And neither Muslim nor Jewish, so no inherent bias.

That's sad, I didn't realise. Is it hiding or just that their race is not obvious in the same way as being Irish or eastern European is not obvious with out asking someone?

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:52

Apparently the government in this country is looking to appoint an ‘anti-Muslim’ hostility tsar.

Will the same courtesy be afforded to the Jewish community?

Or will they just have to tolerate chants of ‘from the river to the sea’ forevermore?

hmmm... thats your opnion and you are perfectly entitled to it, but it's just an opnion. Also as pp said we don't need to make a competition of it, racism of any kind is unacceptable. I get a bit suspicious when people start this kind of thread.

There’s a fair bit of Islamophobia/racism about too. Harder to hide brown skin as well.

one is not worse than the other. Like pp have said there is no place for either in today’s society.

You can be suspicious all you like, I have always spoken out in support of the Jewish community on here.

If that offends you I’m sorry.

This oppressed group needs all the support they can get.

Is that antisemitism, or a political issue?

people have strong opinions on Israel and Palestine, but I’m not sure that is hatred of Jews and the Jewish faith.

you can think Israel is in the wrong in it’s actions against Palestine (or vice versa) without hating the religion practiced in that country.

YABU. My dh and DCs are Muslim and they have endured racism and islamaphobia for years. I can’t believe the things people feel empowered to say. I have seen posts on my local facebook groups calling Muslims nonces and admins refuse to delete them. I have also seen a lot of negative comments about Islam on MN. This is why I have a lot of empathy with Jewish people.

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:58

To the lovely Jewish community on Mumsnet and to the Jewish people everywhere..,I hear you.

It must be soul destroying.

I feel like saying ‘fuck it’ every time I start a thread on this matter, so I can only imagine how you feel.

What's going on in Israel is apartheid, genocide and downright evil. Israel's far right government is becoming deeply unpopular with the Israeli people.

HTH

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 16:00

I stand with you.

The blatant antisemitism and whataboutery can get in the bin. Where it belongs.

OP posts:
Everanewbie · 01/04/2026 16:00

I'm not sure really OP. I think that progressives tend to think of the world as being binary between oppressor and oppressed and Jews are seen by many as rich and white thus falling into the oppressor category.

But they're not really comparable. One is a religion. The other is a race and ethnicity.

A distinction I see is that on the left, many seem to find it impossible to condemn antisemitism without adding "and Islamophobia and all other forms of racism" but have no such suffix when referring to Islamophobia.

Speak out all you like but be careful not to stoke division between communities who are both experiencing a rise in hatred. And I’m not “offended” I said suspicious, it wouldn’t be the first goady thread along these lines.

I agree OP. And to my knowledge the UK government hasn't set up a working party to discuss anti semitism.

Stop playing the Victim.

So many Jewish people - orthodox and secular - are anti-zionists.

Millions of Muslim people are also Semitic!

Semitic-speaking peoples, originating in the ancient Near East, include groups such as Arabs, Jews, Assyrians, Arameans, and Samaritans, with a historical presence spanning from the 3rd millennium BC to the modern day. They are traditionally found throughout the Levant, Mesopotamia, and the Arabian Peninsula.

I’m not Jewish, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about ‘playing the victim’.

But yes, I’d absolutely say that the Jewish community are being persecuted once again.

And it’s not right.
