AIBU to feel annoyed by a payment reminder after 36 hours?

We have a weekly service at our house. The company sends us a bill a few hours after finishing the work and we pay by bank transfer. The cost can vary so we don't pay by direct debit.
Recently, we received the regular bill but didn't pay immediately. The bill was followed up with a reminder 36 hours later. We are longstanding customers. This left me feeling really narked. AIBU?
YABU: They did the work, so you should pay them straight away.
YANBU: They should give you a week to pay. This is pushy behaviour.

I'm guessing window cleaning or gardening.
If I get a bill from a company, the sort who is VAT registered, I would pay within a few days.
If it's some person on their own scratching a living I pay the same day.
I once forgot to pay a regular thing and she reminded me later the same day. I was mortified because I know they are very short of money.

You asked.
MN answered.
96% say you ABU.
Yet you remain intransigent. Not a whiff of self doubt.

Don’t bother asking!

It may be a small business to you - and just a couple - but to them they may have needed the money

so they did the job say Monday and texted you Monday

you ignored /forgot and didnt pay - which sounds unusual for you

but they may have been depending on that money. Even if a small amount to you

so they wait Monday evening and nothing

leave it all day Tuesday

text you wed /after 36hrs

when was you going to pay ?

Blondiebeachbabe · 01/04/2026 16:56

I'm self employed, and I detest customers who don't pay on time. It's so bloody crass. Once you've had the service, pay up what you owe. Not tomorrow, not next week, NOW, because that's my money now, not yours.

People who "forget" to pay are just piss takers. And it's mostly affluent people who don't pay on time. It says so much about a person, and their lack of morality, to receive a service, and think that it's fine to make the person they owe wait days for payment. It's such tight arse behaviour. It speaks volumes about the type of person they are. Honestly, I have scrapped people off my customer list for this. Their loss.

Momo385 · 01/04/2026 16:58

So then just pay them

Lizchapman · 01/04/2026 16:59

So you forgot until they reminded you - why would you be offended by this?????

Climbingrosexx · 01/04/2026 16:59

I don't know the exact dates you are talking about but I guess it would be in the run up to the end of the financial year so they can't wait a week for you to pay. Regardless they did the work you should pay straight away

Almost certainly would have paid on Wednesday.
FWIW, they are definately not scratching a living; retired and in the funds, not to suggest that would justify slow payment.
Some folks are getting carried away accusing me of non payment etc etc; let's remember they were actually paid within 37 hours!

You by your own admission forgot to pay, so they reminded you. Why should someone wait a week to be paid?

What would have made you remember and pay on the Wed - as you didn’t the Mon or tue

Dontgoforward · 01/04/2026 17:05

Double post somehow!

Dontgoforward · 01/04/2026 17:05

Without context it's hard to be sure.
Is this a small company, family run, likely needing your payment to run their business and pay their own bills?
Then your very unreasonable.

A large company paying multiple employees, with a high cash flow and a small payment isn't going to be the difference between food in people's bellies, I can understand why you'd be a bit like you feel told off.

No problem paying. I just forgot.

So it’s a you problem.

Ewock · 01/04/2026 17:06

You say you are paid monthly, is this by dd straight to your bank or do you have to remind them to pay you?
Yabu they did the job they get paid simple as.
Not sure why you're narked that they have reminded you, you were going to pay so what is the issue?

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 17:06

AgingLikeGazpacho · 01/04/2026 16:44

5% of your DH's customers never pay? I do self employed work too and have a 100% pay rate. The quick follow ups for payment are precisely to avoid non-payment. Your DH's laxness is unusual tbh.

I have one person who I constantly have to chase for payment and it is such a needless additional faff and I'm considering dropping them as a consequence

Your comment made my husband chuckle!

Good job they reminded you then. Now you can pay 🙄.

Madarch · 01/04/2026 17:09

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 16:05

The company in my post do not have Terms and Conditions.

My DH is self-employed and does have T&C of payment within 7 days. He has just told me that about 75% of people pay within 7 days; 20 % pay within 21 days; 5 per cent never pay.

I'm interested to see the results of the poll but doubt it's validity. So many people are comparing a small local service with Sainsbury's and there's no comparison, nor with a large solicitors, who have huge overheads. For a small local service, there are no overheads and goodwill is everything.
I still think their greed is making them act foolishly.

I'm sure if you were skint you'd be chasing that debt in

icouldholditwithacobweb · 01/04/2026 17:10

OP: "I just forgot"

THIS IS THE EXACT PURPOSE OF THE REMINDER SO DON'T BITCH ABOUT IT.

Cannedlaughter · 01/04/2026 17:12

You forgot, so it’s a good job they reminded you!!! Why should they have to wait to be paid

LegencyMonsters · 01/04/2026 17:13

You should be paying as soon as they have done the job... You forgot, they reminded you. What's the issue?

We are not in the dark ages anymore where you need to go and get the cash from under your mattress to pay. It literally takes 2 minutes from your phone.

My husband is self employed and people are utter wankers when they leave it as long as they can to pay even though he's done the job, used the materials etc Its always the older generation too.

Gosh well if it made a man chuckle it must have been a silly comment then. We do so think it important that the menfolk keep us aware of our silliness. Nothing silly about 5% of a business being unpaid work, got some real business smarts there hasn't he?

Why? Was he laughing at being so shit at running a business he lets customers get away with not paying?

WhatYouEgg · 01/04/2026 17:15

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 15:45

Yes, I do bother to pay promptly. My definition of prompt payment has always been within a week. I've never felt anyone thought I was being slow. Like I've said, my husband is self-employed and sends out invoices, so it's not like we don't know what we're talking about.
I'm very surprised to hear Mumsnetters always pay bills upon receipt, but then Mumsnetter usually are a cut above ordinary humanity!
I know the poll is against me, but I'm not worried. I don't think this represents Real Life.
Prepared to consider I could be wrong!

I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t pay on receipt? It saves so much headspace and time for all concerned. When I’m given an invoice, I log straight into my banking app and transfer it to them, then email to say it’s done, normally within the hour. I hate owing people anything and want it settled ASAP without risk of forgetting.

It also means I have built up a reliable set of brilliant trades who can often squeeze me in as they know I’m a pleasant person to deal with and they will get their money straightaway.

Overitallnow · 01/04/2026 17:21

So utterly unreasonable!
