AIBU to feel annoyed by a payment reminder after 36 hours?

We have a weekly service at our house. The company sends us a bill a few hours after finishing the work and we pay by bank transfer. The cost can vary so we don't pay by direct debit.
Recently, we received the regular bill but didn't pay immediately. The bill was followed up with a reminder 36 hours later. We are longstanding customers. This left me feeling really narked. AIBU?
YABU: They did the work, so you should pay them straight away.
YANBU: They should give you a week to pay. This is pushy behaviour.

I'm self employed and I think payment within a few days is fine. I've never had anyone expecting immediate payment. In the absence of T&C's, I would have assumed for most smallish jobs it would be 7 days, though for most repeating weekly stuff like tutors, music lessons, cleaners etc, I'd rather a periodic invoice so no one is faffing round each time.

Saying that, if you usually pay straight away, and this time you didn't, it's indication you may have forgotten - which you had, so I can understand why they might send the nag.

Thanks for your helpful reply!
We do occasionally forget to pay first text and get a follow-up after 3-4 days, I think, which I'm perfectly happy with. We've clearly forgotten, and they're politely reminding us. All fine.
On this occasion , the reminder came after 36 hours, so much quicker. Personally, I found it pushy ; hence was narked, and there's nothing on here to persuade me I'm wrong.

@SixtySomething I run a business and keeping track of people like you just add to my mental load. I don’t want to have to keep track of non payment and shouldn’t have to. What if they were late showing up for you?

They quite often are! 😂😆
I don't get on my high horse about it either.
One week not so long ago they said they weren't coming because they decided to go shopping. I just said 'okay'.

When I come to think about it, when we occasionally have tradesmen come to the house eg painter, plumbers, they're all relaxed about payment and say 'just do me a transfer'. They don't send reminders before two days are out.

No, I've never had a reminder either.
Simply because, I ask "How much do I owe you?"
They reply £XY
So I send them £XY.

There is no need for anyone to remind me, because I have paid what I owe.

People like you are a nightmare for freelancers and small businesses...

You did not pay them on time so they sent you a reminder. You admit you had "forgotten" so the reminder was needed.

I would you feel if your employer "forgot" to pay you?

Errors do occur from time to time. No great shakes.

I know the poll is against me, but I'm not worried. I don't think this represents Real Life.

Not really sure why you've asked in AIBU? then.

If you have decided, because 97% of people think YABU, that the vote is somehow unreliable.
I mean, if it were 50:50, you might be able to convince some people this isn't representative, but this is virtually EVERYONE telling you YABU.

MrsOni · 01/04/2026 16:34

YABVU.

A company provided a service. You admit to forgetting to paying, and yet resent getting a reminder.

Get a grip.

Would you be ok with giving your employer a week to pay or do you expect to be paid on pay day?

I'm monthly paid, so I often have to wait 28 days to be paid.

Why are you asking in AIBU when you are being told yes you are but you are clearly not listening. You are one person thinking you are correct and everyone else is wrong which explains your attitude towards paying a tradesperson is not typical of the general consensus.

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 14:37

No problem paying. I just forgot.

LOL. That’s why they reminded you.

But you said

How would you know if they send reminders before two days are out, if you always pay them on completion of the work ? Confused

Ghostorno · 01/04/2026 16:36

They’ve completed the service so you should pay on the day. As a self employed worker, I sympathise with the business. If they’re a small business or sole trader, they’re probably working on narrow margins. I lost count of the amount of customers who forgot to pay me. Some needed multiple reminders. One, in particular, didn’t bother paying for nearly two months. It’s tedious, frustrating and very disrespectful.

If they had to send a reminder after 36 hours then you’re a slow payer.

Why should they wait days on end for you to finally pay.

You pay Tesco as you get your shopping. You pay for your petrol before you leave for forecourt.

Cough up.

If they have a direct debit option for a variable rate, they clearly don't need payment within 36 hours as every payment will take much longer using that service.

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 14:37

No problem paying. I just forgot.

If you genuinely forgot, why weren’t you grateful for the reminder? Surely this was a relief to know you would now pay immediately and the service provider wouldn’t be without money.

If everyone just paid next week then cleaners/gardeners etc might go a week without making a penny!

I don’t think “pay for a service straight away” is that wild a concept!

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 16:41

AuntieCorruption · 01/04/2026 16:10

Wow, so because they don't have T&C's and rely on trust, you feel it's ok to break that trust?

And they are 'greedy' for needing their own money to pay their bills with! I've heard it all now! It's not your money to withhold! Wow!

I'd be replacing you with a more reasonable, prompt paying client if I was them rather than letting you hog that weekly spot that others would like and then you thinking them 'greedy' for needing paid on time for it!

This post has lost connectivity with the OP. I think you're a little keen to hurl the insults.

So on more than one occasion they have had to send reminder texts 🤣🤣 and now you are annoyed they sent one after 36 hours. Maybe just accept they want same day payment and set a reminder accordingly. Not difficult.

JustGiveMeReason · 01/04/2026 16:43

No, @AuntieCorruption 's post is spot on.

AgingLikeGazpacho · 01/04/2026 16:44

5% of your DH's customers never pay? I do self employed work too and have a 100% pay rate. The quick follow ups for payment are precisely to avoid non-payment. Your DH's laxness is unusual tbh.

I have one person who I constantly have to chase for payment and it is such a needless additional faff and I'm considering dropping them as a consequence

No problem paying. I just forgot.

And why they reminded you

if they hadn’t , would you have remembered - guessing not or you would have paid

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 14:37

No problem paying. I just forgot.

That's what a reminder is for 😂

WinterBlues26 · 01/04/2026 16:52

I think that's the reason I'm narked. It's as though I've done something wrong, whereas I think I'm always a prompt payer and 36 hours seems ridiculous to me.
You did do something wrong - you didn't pay them 😂

Prompt:
As an adjective (Quick): Instant, immediate, speedy, punctual, swift, ready.

^ The dictionary meaning doesn't seem to imply that waiting a week falls under prompt payment.

Anonanonanonagain · 01/04/2026 16:52

When my gardener comes I pay him as he is working to his revolut account. Always before he leaves the property. For my nail tech the odd time I have forgotten my bag or phone and tell her if I havent sent you the money by this evening send me a reminder. Tradesmen are different but would not be regular. Maybe this couple are broke and really need to call in the cash or maybe it is their fiscal year end and they want everything tied up to send to their accountant.

DotAndCarryOne2 · 01/04/2026 16:53

SixtySomething · 01/04/2026 14:41

NO!

Then why didn’t you pay immediately ?
