How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

We all really need to make an informed decision when it comes to upcoming local elections i.e. who is pushing net zero and not supporting to drill in our North Sea!

Absolutely - vote for people who fully support transition to renewables so that we aren't reliant on fossil fuels and not subject to crazy prices and shortages every time some madman decides that the Middle East is the setting for his own real life chance to play Call of Duty!

Oh wait....that's not what you meant is it 🙄

Unlikely what's in your tank passed the Straight of Hormuz at all considering only 7% of our oil comes from the Gulf.

It is actually 7% of our diesel. For petrol it is only 1%. Most of our crude oil comes from the USA and Norway.

Oh and read this but not before bed unless you like nightmares

None of this was unforeseen .... here's a cheery tome that kept family Jane amused around the candles in the 70s 😀

you can not panic buy a flammable chemical that needs very specific storage.

I can confidently predict that someone, somewhere will. Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

A woman has been branded 'selfish' after she was filmed filling up Sainsbury's bags with petrol and placing them in her car boot amid the UK's ongoing fuel crisis

Our local supermarkets have all got fuel fine, no sign of silliness for the moment.

It's 7% of crude imports (we import 60% of our crude, of which 12% comes from the Gulf). As you rightly point out, most of our imported crude comes from Notway and the US, with smaller amounts from Libya and Nigeria and only a very small amount from the Gulf states.

Same here. All open, all pumps functioning. No "shortages" in the supermarkets...

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

Edited

Surely having only 2 of 10 pumps working is either a technical issue with 8 pumps or a trick to create a sense of panic? Surely they either have fuel or they don’t. They have an amount and when it runs out it runs out regardless of they sell to 10 people at once or 2 with a further 8 people queuing causing a sense of panic.

People like you are the reason supermarket shelves were empty at the start of Covid.

People like her won't care.

autumn1610 · 31/03/2026 17:01

I don’t understand and the panic buying unless you are then going to not drive your car after you fill up and leave it sat? Otherwise you will be using it. Just carry on as normal. Admittedly I have filled up sooner than I would normally wait till fuel light is on but I drive a lot with work so filled at around 1/4 full today instead but a lot of garages round me seem to be short on unleaded 🤷‍♀️ I would have filled up anyway this week but just not leaving it as low in case I struggle

JenniferBooth · 31/03/2026 17:02

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 31/03/2026 15:34

Even leaving aside the moral problem with panic buying, you could be breaking the law if you don't have a suitable place to store it.

Our housing association didnt give a shit when a neighbour stored a petrol can under the stairs a few years ago

You are assuming that all pumps are fed from the same tank. This is not necessarily true.

Also, a forecourt may close some pumps simply so that they can stay open longer. The manager may take the view that it is better to close some pumps so that they can stay open all day rather than keep them all open and have to close part way through the day when the fuel runs out.

SunnyRedSnail · 31/03/2026 17:09

Well we have over 5% fewer cars that now use electric and not petrol/diesel.

Most our fuel is unaffected with the conflict.

So the ONLY problem we actually have is idiots panic buying, which will firstly make fuel suppliers up their prices to profit from this, and secondly cause shortages.

So if people just carry on as normal we won't have a problem.

(And yes, anyone who fills up their tank when they didn't need to is indeed one of these idiots).

That's a dreadful statement. However with an 89 year old mother nearly 100 miles away and an 89 year old MIL 240 miles away, I confess, I considered it and researched it. Legally, I can only buy and store 20L, I think, so frankly it's a drop in the ocean. Just praying at present, because if we have to get to them, we have to. Presently keeping both cars full at present - not due to panic buying but because we have people who are dependent on us.

No shortages here and if I have an emergency with an elderly, I'll pay what it takes.

Discodance1988 · 31/03/2026 17:10

Panic buying fuel makes no sense, especially if your not filling jerry cans up by the dozen... Like once your fuel tanks full you can't add anymore anyway... Many people (myself included) fill the tank right up to the cut off any time they refuel their car.

The big question is this... Never mind the bog roll shortage of 2020, will there be another yeast shortage 😂

youbizarrehorse · 31/03/2026 16:39

I don’t think there was any suggestion that it was. Surely ‘crazy traffic’ is just a phrase to express that there will be a lot of traffic? There always is on bank holidays. It refers to the volume of traffic, not the people driving or their reasons for doing so.

Well the poster said both were crazy, visiting family & days out 💁🏻‍♀️ (post at 15.35)

Peony1985 · 31/03/2026 17:11

I remember the tanker drivers strike. Low fuel meant high prices but people kept on driving.
Once most pumps actually had none everyone drove really slowly and there were less cars about.
I wish they would ration it because then everyone is in the same boat.

Thank you!! I’m nearly out and I do a lot of baking so I’ve added it to my list. Only two packs I’m not greedy.

Me too - I remember how quiet the roads were. It was lovely 😆

Sesma · 31/03/2026 17:17

People probably making sure they have full tank for Easter at a cheaper garage, there is 10-20p litre price difference at some for diesel.

GinToBegin · 31/03/2026 17:21

I stopped to fill up yesterday, as the tank was down to about 15%, and the previous transaction at the pump I used was £3.40. Ridiculous.

TeethAreImportant · 31/03/2026 17:22

There are a few pumps at every petrol station out of supplies by us, but still petrol to be had, albeit at crazy prices. For what it's worth, the last tankers that got through Hormuz before it was closed, will be docking at the various ports they were bound for in the 2 weeks after Easter. Its after that there are likely to be shortages in some things, all depending on what the orange lunatic does next of course. Not scaremongering, just reality.

scalt · 31/03/2026 17:23

Don’t start threads like this. It’s exactly how panic spreads really quickly.

If you are topping up your car to the brim every day, do it quietly.

changenameagain555 · 31/03/2026 17:23

So I think that people are being a little naive to assume that because our fuel doesn't come from the middle east that we will be fine as long as people don't panic buy. If global supplies are effected it is not unreasonable to assume that there might be some redistribution of fuel supplies and that some fuel which was previously sold to us might be sent to other countries instead.

The other issue is that jet fuel does come from the ME so even if we have petrol and diesel there is quite a strong possibility of flight cancellations in the future.

Hereforthecommentz · 31/03/2026 17:25

We won't run of out fuel, there won't be rationing. Stop being gullible
