How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

something like this could gain traction and bring the country to a standstill very quickly

BettyBoh · 31/03/2026 15:57

What’s in your tank now had passed the straight of Hormuz well before conflict started.
rationing will start soon if the straight isn’t opened properly within the next few days. ie if it looks like supply will not be fully reinstated.
reserves will be kept for military use.

Bloozie · 31/03/2026 15:57

Both our local petrol stations are out of fuel. We held our nerve in terms of not panic buying, let our cars run empty - and then had to drive 15 miles to the next nearest petrol station, which was wildly expensive and not all pumps were working.

We're walking more and hoping it all blows over soon. (Yes, I know).

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

People like you are the reason supermarket shelves were empty at the start of Covid.

I didn't realise the local councils controlled the international oil markets...

Oh moments like these I miss the laughing emoji reaction.

I agree but after Covid and watching everyone else not give a damn while i struggled, i've changed my attitude.
If you snooze you lose and every man for himself is my stance. I'm not going to be a martyr!

But can you see if everyone has that attitude what a shit place it would be?

Unlikely what's in your tank passed the Straight of Hormuz at all considering only 7% of our oil comes from the Gulf.

Petrol ration books were issued during the 1970s, but ultimately not used.
I have done a quick google, and it would appear to have been in 1973 under PM Edward Heath.
I would presume that if there was a real shortage that certain jobs (lorry drivers) and public transport (bus drivers) would get preferential treatment.
More important is the possibility of power cuts. However, if these are planned cuts, it is possible to manage things better.
Oil and gas may be traded international, but if we drilled in the North Sea, the companies would presumably be paying corporation tax?

There are a few pumps at every petrol station out by us, but still petrol to be had, albeit at crazy prices. For what it's worth, the last tankers that got through Hormuz before it was closed, will be docking at the various ports they were bound for in the 2 weeks after Easter. Its after that there might start to be shortages in some things, all depending on what the orange lunatic does next of course.

Communities got us through Covid, not Mad Max roleplayers.

I understand we have a good reserve for the time being. If the situation carries on, I think you'll find people naturally ration themselves (if only the odd shopping trip on foot/going for a local walk rather than a day trip) which will help extend fuel supplies.

DD is away at the moment in a foreign country and they have less fuel stocks than us, so everyone is just being asked to use it conservatively for now - if worst case scenario prevails for that country, fuel will be for absolutely essential services - so at least food/support to infrastructure and emergency services will be available there.

I totally agree with others, don't risk storing fuel at home in containers.

I know there's the disappointment if a holiday can't go ahead (had this happen twice in my lifetime 48 hours before a holiday), but if you've booked a flight and it's cancelled by airline, you should get your money back.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 31/03/2026 15:34

Even leaving aside the moral problem with panic buying, you could be breaking the law if you don't have a suitable place to store it.

This. I think it's illegal to store fuel except in certain secure locations

TheVeloursImgonnaChangeNsoul · 31/03/2026 16:08

ThatCyanCat · 31/03/2026 15:45

Nobody ever thinks they're panic buying. During Covid there were plenty of people who insisted they weren't panic buying because they were very calm while putting 50 toilet rolls and 40 bottles of handwash into their shopping trolleys.

Along with buying enough meat to reconstruct a coo, chicken or pig.

Soverymuchfruit · 31/03/2026 16:10

Honestly, the weather's nice, if you've got an old bike and it will work in any way for your regular trips then pull it out, oil it and pump the tyres up. Obviously this won't work for everyone but if it can work for you at least a bit, then it gives you good exercise, saves you money, and cuts fuel demand that tiny bit so someone else can have that bit.

user1497787065 · 31/03/2026 16:11

I think the reverse. We were planning a day out on Saturday and thinking actually is non-essential so we will stay at home.

PortSalutPlease · 31/03/2026 16:11

Most of our fuel doesn’t come through the straight of Hormuz, there’s a run on petrol because morons are panic buying and keeping cans in their shed.

There will still be petrol, it’s just going to be more expensive whilst people behave like arseholes.

Same as loo roll during Covid - there was never actually a shortage, just lots of inconsiderate fuckwits hoarding.

I remember last time people did that in the early 2000s. It didn't end well for some as not only were they dumb and selfish enough to do this, they were also dumb enough not to know how to properly store their spare petrol 🔥🔥🔥

NamelessNancy · 31/03/2026 16:12

Please don't start storing jerry cans of fuel everyone. It's so dangerous.

Morepositivemum · 31/03/2026 16:13

I’d be more worried about heating oil than aviation fuel? I know we’re on the way to summer but April can still bring snow and summers only a few months.

More recent than that, there was a strike at a refinery in the early 2010s.

DramaQueenlady · 31/03/2026 16:14

When will the panic buying of loo roll begin again 😂
