How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

The NHS is days away from running out of some medical supplies according to Sir Jim Mackey its CEO.

Where can I find details?

CrocusesFlowering · 31/03/2026 15:39

@IAxolotlQuestions
I can’t do links on my phone but if you search for ‘NHS medical supplies Iran war, it’s covered on several newspaper websites.

Crazy traffic?? Like people travelling to see their families? Or days out?

Yes. We should be doing essential journeys as far as possible at the moment and reigning in consumption.

I didn't realise the local councils controlled the international oil markets...

🤣🤣

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

Edited

No, that doesn’t make sense. That is what is causing most of the problems!! Fuel stations running out of fuel because people are panic buying extra fuel, topping up more regular leading to a shortage at garages who then close pumps until they have another delivery. It makes sense to just buy fuel as you normally would. If everyone did that there wouldn’t be shortages

ILoveDaffodills · 31/03/2026 15:44

Bettercallsalli · 31/03/2026 15:35

Well both. But if no Diesel then people won't be going far i assume.

It's not crazy to want to see your family over a long bank holiday weekend or have days out

🙄🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

It’s also dangerous.

ThatCyanCat · 31/03/2026 15:45

Nobody ever thinks they're panic buying. During Covid there were plenty of people who insisted they weren't panic buying because they were very calm while putting 50 toilet rolls and 40 bottles of handwash into their shopping trolleys.

Well it kind of is if there is no fuel to get you there or back. People will be filling up loads now this is in the news so it will be chaos by Friday.

Exactly, but you'd can explain it to people, you can't understand it for them! 🙇🏻‍♀️

Our supply isn’t reliant on Middle East.

we’ll have to pay more for regular supply, but I don’t think we’ll need ration so long as people are sensible

so long as people are sensible

That's us fucked then

My DC was offered a too-good-to-refuse offer to delay their flights (to the Far East). And delay by a while. They have taken it as they would rather not get stuck out there. Clearly there is an issue, at least in certain parts of the world, with avgas supply/cost.

Nothing to add to the debate except I really dislike the fiction that the NHS is a business that needs a CEO.

I agree but after Covid and watching everyone else not give a damn while i struggled, i've changed my attitude.

The only thing affecting uk fuel supplies is localised panic buying, see also queues. The places likely to have fuel shortages are countries who cannot afford the higher prices

Storing fuel in gerry cans is a bad idea, its a fire hazard and can void your home and/or car insurance.
Then theres the issue of panic buying affecting fuel supplies, which then drives further panic buying and thus creating a self fulfilling prophecy. Remember the look roll issue during covid.

DdraigGoch · 31/03/2026 15:52

Movinginthesunlight · 31/03/2026 15:30

We all really need to make an informed decision when it comes to upcoming local elections i.e. who is pushing net zero and not supporting to drill in our North Sea!

We need to beware of snake oil salesmen who think that we can just switch a pump on and live happily ever after.

It would take 5-10 years to increase North Sea production, and that won't be enough to drop the cost of fuel anyway.

The priority needs to be building additional transmission lines to get the electricity from where it's generated (northern Scotland) to where it's consumed (the south east).

That’s the sort of selfish behaviour that ensures higher prices for the remaining fuel and means that people who need it miss out.

Scaremongering

Any actually reliable sources discussing it? MPs, industry bodies etc? Or just click bait from lowest denominator newspapers?

Not really scaremongering....both big tescos near to me have run out of diesel. One has no petrol left & other one I visited yesterday had several pumps already out of petrol.

Such a shame - there’s something to be said for setting an example for others around you, like in conversation with friends and family. Or not following the dumb Jerry-can advice shared elsewhere!

Yes Keir Starmer was in a meeting yesterday with a lot of industry big-wigs about the situation, plus he'll be holding a COBRA meeting today.

Very much not scaremongering. There will be an impact from the Iran war, unfortunately. The longer it goes on, the worse things will get. People are barely waking up to this now.
