How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

Please don't start storing jerry cans of fuel everyone. It's so dangerous.

Agree

MrsLizzieDarcy · 31/03/2026 16:17

If it takes hundreds of flights out, it's not a bad thing at all for the environment and all our health. People shouldn't ever be paying £50 for flights, it's morally corrupt.

But they do need to ration the panic buyers. I had to fill up today and joked with the cashier that I felt embarrassed to join the lines, she said well at least your purchase is over £100 unlike most of the people we've had in today who've spent £8 or whatever the minimum fill is.

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

Edited

And THIS is why there is no fuel

Not really scaremongering....both big tescos near to me have run out of diesel. One has no petrol left & other one I visited yesterday had several pumps already out of petrol.

The reason Tesco is running low on fuel is because they haven’t hiked their prices up to the max, so people are filling up there as their prices are still relatively cheap. Hence they are running out regularly, but they still have fuel coming in

drivinmecrazy · 31/03/2026 16:20

I usually take our dog to a forest a 20 minute drive away. Have decided to knock that on the head and just walk in the fields near our house.
miserable for me and probably boring for the dog having both his walks in local fields.
but we’re fortunate that I don’t NEED to use my car, it’s more of a luxury TBH.
However DH is responsible for keeping buses maintained and on the road in London. If he can’t get in the buses won’t run, most of his workforce drive in from all directions.
Getting DD from uni on Thursday is going to be my priority.
I think those thinking that we’re only heading for shortages due to panic buying are being naive.
if this were the case then we would see a slow down on demand pretty quickly.
Even though we are not totally reliant on ME oil it’s still a significant amount.
don’t think we can rely on our other suppliers either. They’ll be looking out for themselves with one eye on profiteering.
whichever way you view it, we are facing an imminent crisis.

particularly as DT has started this war and declared this afternoon that we’re on our own, despite not being responsible for starting this shit show.

Tableforjoan · 31/03/2026 16:20

Most places are only running low because everyone’s constantly topping up just in case rather than doing their normal habits.

frozendaisy · 31/03/2026 16:22

we will all be in the same boat if/when fuel rations occur.

will deal with it then I am not speculating on something when I don’t know the details

think the cost will ration people before the supply

mondaytosunday · 31/03/2026 16:24

Diesel fuel is the one that may have shortages by end if April, but petrol supplies are fine - it’s panic buying which are causing shortages at individual pumps.

SurreySenMum26 · 31/03/2026 16:25

This has been debated for the last week on MN but I have still yet to even wait for a pump to be free. I think it's fear mongering.

Also unlike toilet roll you can not panic buy a falmable chemical that needs very specific storage. Rather than worry about I'm not letting my car get near empty and living my life.

I drove into central London yesterday. Was very surprised at how quite the roads was. Not sure if that's the new norm or due to petrol costs.

Loub1987 · 31/03/2026 16:27

I also here toilet roll is running out … 🤫

Missingducks · 31/03/2026 16:28

it'd be great for the environment should airlines run out of fuel - however, I suspect surcharges on flights are more likely

Sure fire way to lead to shortages sooner rather than later.

SerendipityJane · 31/03/2026 16:31

you can not panic buy a flammable chemical that needs very specific storage.

I can confidently predict that someone, somewhere will. Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

JohnofWessex · 31/03/2026 16:32

Right..........

The UK is 'self sufficient' in petrol from North Sea oil BUT we import diesel & heating oil.

The closure of the Straits of Hormuz means 20 (?)% of global oil production has been lost. Now we might not buy it just like Ukrainian wheat but the people that do will be looking to buy the supplies we normally use.

Now I am old enough to remember the oil crisis in the 70's so why not start by doing what the did then and reduce speed limits, I suggest 60 on motorways and 50 everywhere else.

I would also suggest a ban on the sale of new vehicles with a fuel consumption over a particular limit

Oh and read this but not before bed unless you like nightmares

Deliveries are coming in as normal where I work. It’s customers that are the problem, they learnt nothing from covid and continue to panic buy.

It makes no sense and is incredibly stupid.
Just stop with the panic mongering.

Sure fire way to lead to shortages sooner rather than later.

Shortages are only a problem for those who don't plan ahead and top up when they can. Not everyone lives in the countryside where they can get to work on the morale high horse.

It's not crazy to want to see your family over a long bank holiday weekend or have days out

🙄🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

Edited

I don’t think there was any suggestion that it was. Surely ‘crazy traffic’ is just a phrase to express that there will be a lot of traffic? There always is on bank holidays. It refers to the volume of traffic, not the people driving or their reasons for doing so.
