How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

@Freysimo yes he might...I wonder if it's to reassure us that nothing is happening here !
Or maybe something is happening and those with the broadest shoulders will be carrying it all.

Cold tea for some.

PuttingOutFirewithGasoline · 01/04/2026 07:28

@MandemChickenShop I read a few weeks ago that this would happen . I wonder what the gov is waiting for

There are other sources of fuel, and wind and solar need very little sun/wind to work. But you will do realise there are other sources of renewable energy?

Plastic is made from oil. Everything uses plastic.
Fertiliser is made from gas production. Essential for growing enough crops.

I've just read on X that our beloved leader Sir Keir will be addressing the nation today so he might mention possible fuel rationing.

If he really wants to help he will be announcing a cut in fuel vat to offset the very large extra tax income they are getting 🤞
But somehow I doubt he really wants to help that much

What? We are talking about fuel. Not plastic.

I heard this too. Sky news is saying that it will be about the 'help' that they are giving to families; national pay increase, benefits etc

itsnotfairisit · 01/04/2026 07:48

Because I've got electric now I largely sail past petrol stations without even a glance. But yesterday I was surprised by a queue on a roundabout. Took me a moment to realise cars were lining up for fuel at the pumps just off the roundabout. Proper long queue. I think it's panic buying. Couldn't see any signs saying pumps were empty

Scaremongering

Any actually reliable sources discussing it? MPs, industry bodies etc? Or just click bait from lowest denominator newspapers?

Reliable source...MPs.......😂😂

The helium shortage is what you really want to be concerned about. No helium, no cooling for MRI scanners. No cooling, no scans, slower / fewer cancer diagnosis.

OhWise1 · 01/04/2026 08:03

Very little of our supply cones from the ME so any shortages eould be caused by doughnuts like you scaremongering!

Marmalademorning · 01/04/2026 08:13

Im starting to hear comments on Facebook occasionally from people about fuel station supply, so I guess people are panic buying. I think we are weeks away from shortages, and if it happens, then priority will need to be given to delivery trucks and the emergency services. It’s been weighing on my mind a lot because I can see this going on for months, if not years.

We’ve been let down by successive governments. We have next to no fuel storage, an under funded military and they sold off our steel making. We aren’t the great nation we used to be thanks to our politicians.

SouthernNights59 · 01/04/2026 08:16

PuttingOutFirewithGasoline · 01/04/2026 07:13

Umm but we do use fuel ?
We use a car to get to work etc.?
So we won't use it anymore than normal.
I wonder why this doesn't affect other counties .

Countries all around the world are taking measures around this. What makes you think they aren't affected?

A state owned steel/oil/cement industry wouldn’t be viable if we look at how our governmental departments and NHS are being run (caveat these aren’t meant to be profit making).

Tireddadplus · 01/04/2026 08:33

Petrol supply will be ok. Diesel / jet fuel is short worldwide so prices have doubled. For countries that can afford it there will probably only be cost increases. Countries with less cash will run out first obviously. And panic buying will mess up the supply chain completely but hopefully people have learned thats a rubbish idea.

Some medicine / medical products will be limited as almost all of them are produced from crude oil derivatives, and some of these supply chains are effected. But not all obvs.

If this crazy wat continues into May then no one knows!

I had the same surprise while driving an EV and wanting to turn off to the supermarket. Made a quick trip significantly longer. I did notice a lack of supplies in the supermarket mind.

True, but oil prices are globally controlled and it doesn't matter where you get your oil from, prices will go up and thus affect everyone.

This is happening whether you believe it or not!

The NHS would be run very differently if it weren’t a political battleground and if there wasn’t do much to undo from past battles.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 01/04/2026 08:51

also, we heard all the excuses about the efficiency of privatisation when the water companies were privatised.

Every other comment on my local FB page is "Has Tesco/Asda got any diesel?"

You'll be getting reimbursed by your employer I'm sure. Plus if they do ration they will prioritize for people in care roles who drive as part of their job.

How much experience do you have of working for minimum wage and getting travel expenses covered by employers, let alone getting prompt reimbursement?

Linenspots · 01/04/2026 08:59

My house insurance policy categorically states that cover is revoked if more than 1 small can of fuel is stored anywhere on the property.

They referred to the small, green ones used for lawn mowers etc. I can't remember what the insurance company called them, but I knew what they meant.

These are things that were due to increase anyway, it is a publicity stunt with no new funding. Source: Business and Trade SoS on the news this morning.
