How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

The toilet roll became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Talking about car fuels, I wouldn't bother, unless you really need to travel, eg people having essential medical treatment some distance away in the big cities (you can't always use public transport for this). If you're talking airlines, that's different.

Omg. There currently is no announcement of fuel shortages or rationing of petrol.

Who is seriously not going to drive in case of a theoretical fuel shortage in which a theoretical nurse needs it more? This is bonkers.

Everyone knows the situation and has seen fuel go up 20p a litre in a couple of weeks. That isn’t normal and as a nation we rely on petrol and diesel.
Of course government should say something. Why would it not?

Here’s the stats: only 12% of the UKs fuel comes through Hormuz. Any shortages are as a result of scaremongering and panic buying as previous posters have suggested

12% is a significant percentage to lose…

Fernticket · 31/03/2026 21:58

Just filled my car up at our local Tesco's ( my tank was very low). Talking to the lady cashier and she told me that they are having fuel deliveries in every day instead of every 2 days as normal. Largely caused by panic buying. She said there was no need for it fuel stocks are Ok.
Stop panic buying people!

North Sea oil is sold on the international market, not domestically. It wouldn’t make a jot of difference to our situation. See this briefing by energy experts who track these things for a living :

https://www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk/news/drill-baby-drill-approach-north-sea-would-cost-households-more-fully-renewable-uk-finds-oxford

ETA it is bizarre to me that folks recommend MORE investment in fossil fuels when that reliance is exactly what creates vulnerability in our societies anyway. NS is a maturing (read emptying) oil and gas field, and we’d have to look internationally for our supplies after a few years again anyway.

May as well produce the energy domestically and renewably, so we actually have control over supply and prices.

Edited

Agree, why do people insist on continuing to be reliant on oil? If we had invested in renewables earlier we wouldn’t be in this situation now 🤦‍♀️

It’s 12% of oil imports, so more like 7% of our total as we produce 40% of our own supply. And it’s only used for producing diesel and jet fuel, not petrol.

Well this is MN where taking a pebble from a beach is wanton destruction of the planet.

Nuclear and storage technologies do though. I have solar and my lights are on and washing machine going despite it being dark outside - not using any mains. Nuclear for base load and renewables+storage for variable load is the future.

Putting a highlight flammable liquid in open plastic bags, lined or not, in the boot of your car, is the very opposite of clever. In fact, I think it would get her a Darwin Award nomination at the very least. Anybody lights a cigarette near her car for the next 2 months and they might not live to tell the tale.

If she actually used plastic bags... adding a hydrocarbon-based liquid to a plastic bag is beyond stupid as this is likely to dissolve or degrade the bag.

That's what happened before though! People on social media would spread word and post pictures of queues and then people would panic and go and fill up and round and round it went for a while until eventually people stopped posting and it calmed down.

Yes. We should be doing essential journeys as far as possible at the moment and reigning in consumption.

You go ahead love
what a stupid response 🙄

Same as my locals Sainsbury’s delivery every day. But the smaller petrol stations are selling out as normally they might do 3 deliveries a week and every month they would have the odd couple of days sold out anyway, so everyone’s headings to Sainsbury’s and the they keep running out. Soo ahhhh panic buy.

TeethAreImportant · 31/03/2026 22:33

Isekaied · 31/03/2026 21:17

There was probably a queue cos our local tesco is the cheapest place for fuel locally.

Agree. Costco had queues at their petrol stations here (North west), and are now limiting customers, likely it's because they are so cheap.

It is if there are fuel shortages and your going to see your family means a community nurse is grounded as there is no fuel!

There isn't a fuel shortage, there's panic buying causing localised supply issues.

Someone visiting their family in Glasgow from Manchester isn't going to make a drip of difference to localised shortages in Newcastle

Drilling in the North Sea would benefit me personally and even I am happy to admit its a totally counterproductive idea.

The video with the woman and Sainsbury’s bags is AI. Crazy it’s being reported as news when no one can prove when it happened or get an eye witness quote from the guy filming. Plus convenient you don’t see her pumping into the bag and video ends before seeing a reg number

It has to be bollocks, Sainsburys bags have holes punched into the base, the fuel would just run through when she was filling them.

Panic buying makes me sick.
Im a support worker for young adults with severe learning disabilities.
i need my car to pick them
up to do their personal chosen activities.
I love my job
I get minimum wage
i can’t afford to keep my tank topped up.
Fucking hell 😡

justasking111 · 31/03/2026 22:44

Some people may cut back leisure driving because of the cost of fuel. Food costs may rise because of transport costs. I doubt we'll escape unscathed

You'll be getting reimbursed by your employer I'm sure. Plus if they do ration they will prioritize for people in care roles who drive as part of their job.

No I don’t get travel allowance

DopeyS · 31/03/2026 22:48

I hate seeing all the papers talking about rationing and stirring people up to create an issue they can report on. It was a pain in the arse last time as I drive a lot for work so need fuel. Also drive to lots of new places so don't know where fuel stations are.
Luckily last time I went to expensive service stations as panic buyers tended to avoid those and I have a fuel card. It just creates unnecessary stress.

Theunamedcat · 31/03/2026 22:48

Im not using my car more than I have to she is economical but obviously cannot run on fresh air

I needed to lose weight anyway

You work as a support worker driving service users as part of your job and you dont get your fuel costs reimbursed?
