Your awareness of petrol prices?

How aware are you when you fill up your car if what it's costing you?

Talking to a family member yesterday, who uses their car to travel round for work, and they said they just fill up and don't bother really keeping track of the cost.

Surely if self employed, you'd need to know as you mean need to adjust your prices to your customers you visit.

Do you just fill up and pay or are you actively tracking the price.
AIBU to assume, someone who is self employed and visiting customers would be monitoring the costs?

Totally unaware as I fill up at most once a month.

Although I did fill up sooner than usual last time. I had a half tank but went to fill up the day of the attacks as I knew it could get sticky. I've only driven about 40 miles this month.

Flamingosarentreal · 28/03/2026 19:32

i know which three petrol stations near me are the cheapest and use them.

ABC0375056 · 28/03/2026 19:32

I am noticing it and aware but to be honest it's not making a great difference to me at the moment. I probably only do five miles a day so whilst them 5 miles have gone up 20% or so it's actually only gone up pence. I'm sure I'll notice more when I have to do a long journey next as my family are in Southampton and it's about six hours from me!

cadburyegg · 28/03/2026 19:35

I am aware of the cost but I don’t keep track of it. There is only one petrol station near me, so there’s no point/it’s not cost effective IMO to be travelling around looking for cheaper fuel.

8TinyToeBeans · 28/03/2026 19:36

I don’t pay much attention. I only use about half a tank a month and I just fill up by habit after payday. It costs whatever it costs, but I’m fortunate to be in a position of not needing to care.

TheCurious0range · 28/03/2026 19:38

I know my car usually costs just over £60 to fill up and this week it was £72, I don't do a lot of mileage and usually put aside about £75 a month for petrol. I also like to run a tank down to empty then fill right up and when I do I reset my trip counter, so I get an idea of my fuel consumption per mile suddenly goes awry. I also hate going to the petrol station so can't be bothered with £20 here and there

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 19:39

I fill up 2-3 times a month, I don’t keep track, just fill up when my light comes on. I think it seems to only be costing around a fiver or so more than it was before the prices increased recently.

TofuGoblin · 28/03/2026 19:41

It costs what it costs as far as im concerned. I have definitely noticed it go up (usually takes aboyt 60 quid to fill my car but this week it went up to 87!). But I don't drive around looking at prices and filling up at the cheapest place, I just fill up when I need to wherever is convenient.

lisa7843 · 28/03/2026 19:41

I budget £60 for per tank of fuel and have been doing that since the last time fuel prices went a tad crazy so it’s actually a bit generous and over the last year it’s always a pleasant surprise when I have money left over in the pot. A tank still hasn’t come in over £60 so not been too noticeable for us yet.

lisa7843 · 28/03/2026 19:42

It’s only gone up about 12p a litre here, so far.

TeenLifeMum · 28/03/2026 19:42

I don’t pay much attention because I need it whatever the price. I know it’s going up but still need fuel.

LIZS · 28/03/2026 19:43

Over £1.70 on m1 yesterday Shock

Anna20MFG · 28/03/2026 19:46

I drive a lot, and use waze to find the cheapest. There are huge price differences at the moment.

RustyBear · 28/03/2026 19:47

I filled up today and thought it was surprisingly cheap at 1.499 compared with about 1.90 in 2022 with the Ukraine war.

WhamBamThankU · 28/03/2026 19:48

I fill mine up when it gets below 3/4 full but don’t pay attention to price as I need it anyway so can’t do anything about the cost.

Badbadbunny · 28/03/2026 19:49

We don't use much but we keep our eyes open when out and about so will put fuel in the car when we see somewhere selling it lower than most others, whether we "need" some or not. The differences in price between garages is insane at the moment, there being a 10p per litre difference between our two nearest garages and 20p per litre difference at a garage in the next town.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 28/03/2026 19:50

I've got a hybrid and do a small mileage so fill up less than once month and so don't worry about the price.

Auroraloves · 28/03/2026 19:50

I usually put 15-20 in at a time. And do it 2-3 times a month. Not really keeping track but I did put in 45 at the beginning of this month when it was still ~£1.20 a litre

TakeALookAtTheseSwatches · 28/03/2026 19:50

I have no idea really. If I can only put £20 then that's what I put in, it's not going to make a difference knowing how much per litre it is really, there's absolutely nothing I can do about it.

nannynick · 28/03/2026 19:51

Too aware. Have a chart of what petrol has cost me over the years!

Your awareness of petrol prices?
donotmissyourchancetoblow · 28/03/2026 19:52

I’m aware of the cost and know the pricing that the three petrol station i fill up at, where is cheaper etc but I have to use my car so I just need to absorb the increase and make it work I don’t drive less because it’s costing me more

NoSoupForU · 28/03/2026 19:56

I'm not self employed but I don't take the blindest bit of notice really. It costs whatever it costs, and can't be avoided.

OneSeriesTooMany · 28/03/2026 19:57

I normally just fill up whenever I need it but I am trying to cut back on “aimless” driving now as it’s costing more and my genral household budgets are struggling (all costs not just fuel). I was £80 to fill up last time it’s gone up a lot imo. Similarly noticing large differences between garages in local area 10-20 differences add up. I don’t fuel shop though. I went to one today and they’d ran out diesel. Sign said waiting on delivery which doesn’t normally happen so can only assume people are keeping their cars topped up more frequently as anticipating further prices increases and potentially shortages.

Badbadbunny · 28/03/2026 20:01

It costs whatever it costs, and can't be avoided.

But you can shop around to get it cheaper. Not by driving miles to find a cheaper petrol station, but just from observing forecourt prices as you pass garages and stop to fill up when you see one cheaper than the others.

Shade17 · 28/03/2026 20:02

I only put in £20 at a time so these price rises don’t affect me.
