Your awareness of petrol prices?

How aware are you when you fill up your car if what it's costing you?

Talking to a family member yesterday, who uses their car to travel round for work, and they said they just fill up and don't bother really keeping track of the cost.

Surely if self employed, you'd need to know as you mean need to adjust your prices to your customers you visit.

Do you just fill up and pay or are you actively tracking the price.
AIBU to assume, someone who is self employed and visiting customers would be monitoring the costs?

I keep an eye of which petrol stations are lower than others locally but as travel to work is not optional, I don't pay attention to how much it's actually costing me fill the tank right up.

I will avoid driving for no particular reason at the moment though so e.g no going to the shops just for something to do.

Amazed at so many not being aware or tracking closely. I feel painfully aware and very conscious of the cost. Perhaps I am more unlucky with my commute than I realised!

The thing is for me, it costs what it costs.
It’s not negotiable, I can’t get by without it. It’s not like I can just decide to not put fuel in my car until the prices become more reasonable.
im in the office 2-3 days a week, it’s a 22 mile round trip but very fuel inefficient as it’s windy country lanes (riddled with potholes of course!) and a neverending amount of traffic lights and temporary lights so very stop start.
It wouldn’t make any difference whether or not I closely tracked the price of fuel, I need it regardless of what it costs.

Bjorkdidit · 28/03/2026 20:41

We get ours from Costco where its usually cheaper than everywhere else.

Your family member is probably working on 45 p a mile for vehicle running costs, as its easier than counting everything and separating according to business/personal miles.

Their fuel might be a relatively small part of the cost of running their business or they might think they can't increase their prices however much they spend on fuel.

Boolabus · 28/03/2026 20:43

Very aware I've a 30km commute to work. I only fill up in certain stations that are generally a few cent cheaper (I'm in Ireland fuel costs more here)

Peony1985 · 28/03/2026 20:43

SE here. I have a commute and do lots of miles with work. Luckily work has cheaper prices than home but still gone up 20p a litre.

Very worried actually. Theres no end to the conflict and in a month or so the fuel situation will be serious rather just expensive.

I'm quite concerned too, I can't do my job from home, I also have to pay a toll on my route to work so feel completely fleeced

Dressinggownlife · 28/03/2026 20:45

No idea what it costs I fill up x 2 times a month. Never take notice or could tell you what cost is per litre. It cost what it costs

Aprilshowers13 · 28/03/2026 20:47

We have a fuel budget so just stick to thst.

SwirlyGates · 28/03/2026 20:49

A few people are saying here that it costs what it costs, so they don't bother monitoring. But unless you live in an isolated area, you will have a choice of petrol stations and the price can vary quite a bit - don't you bother to compare the prices? And if you're on a long drive, if you know the usual price range you might spot somewhere that is good value and fill up there, rather than stopping randomly and paying over the odds? (Durham services, I'm looking at you!)

Catcatcatcatcat · 28/03/2026 20:50

No idea. I fill up maybe five times a year.

Nuffpills · 28/03/2026 20:52

We have about 10 petrol stations in our area and the prices vary wildly! There is a 15p price range from 134p to 149p that I’ve noticed out and about.

ShakyBake · 28/03/2026 20:54

I'm a 4x4 driver (diesel) and half glance at the forecourt display if I remember, it makes no difference to me, I may look out of idle curiosity but it makes no difference to me

I agree that I can’t get by without either but I do feel very conscious and it does dictate my week. Ie food shop comes from shops beside Costco where I get fuel etc

TipsyPeachSnake · 28/03/2026 20:56

I thought if you’re self employed you reclaim tax based on mileage not cost. I think it’s 45p per mile for first 10,000 miles regardless petrol price.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 28/03/2026 20:56

I need to fill up tomorrow. We’re going away over Easter, but using dhs company car which is an EV. If worse comes to the worse, we will just use the one car as Dh uses the train twice a week and DDs and me can get buses in between. If they’re a no go, we’ll just use the EV.

Bookmarkers · 28/03/2026 20:59

Totally unaware and always have been. I’m always befuddled if anyone mentions price per litre as it could be £5 or £20, I have no clue.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 28/03/2026 21:04

I've always lived in places where a car is optional, and I wouldn't run a car if I needed to quibble about the extra pence.

My dad is always directing me to the station that's .7 per litre cheaper and I imagine is silently appalled when I don't drive a couple of miles out of my way to do so.

chellewillnotbebeaten · 28/03/2026 21:15

fully aware! I’m a district nurse and petrol costs cripple me at the best of times never mind the bad ones

Petrol at my nearest supermarket was 138 last week. This week it's 145 at the same supermarket. I passed a different garage today, where it was 155 Shock

I know how long a tank of diesel lasts roughly and I'm aware of the cost per litre, and I'll fill up at places I know are cheaper. But it's one of those costs I have very little control over so I don't spend too much time dwelling over it. Sometimes I don't really notice the total cost as I have to put in my credit card before I fill up.

Growlybear83 · 28/03/2026 21:19

Im self employed and Ive no idea how much I pay for petrol. I agree my prices with the schools I work for annually and don’t take the cost of petrol into account when reviewing my charges.

I don’t compare prices but I’m not on a tight budget and am frivolous. I pass one petrol station on my way to work so that’s usually where I fill up.
I don’t look when I’m going past others in my local area because I only ever fill up when my petrol warning light comes on. My memory is also pretty shit so would have no idea if the one at Tescos was more or less than the one at Sainsbury’s or whatever.
Some people are very financially savvy through either need or generally looking after the pennies. I’m not one of those people.
It’s such a hot topic at the moment but honestly it usually costs me about £70
to fill up and it’s now costing around £75 2-3 times a month so £15 more. It’s not breaking the bank.

Pedallleur · 28/03/2026 21:21

Between 1.44 and 1.55 a litre near me. But you are going to need fuel if you drive so nothing you can do except shop around

Notmyreality · 28/03/2026 21:22

Shade17 · 28/03/2026 20:02

I only put in £20 at a time so these price rises don’t affect me.

Smart.

Madarch · 28/03/2026 21:22

We're a 1 tank a month household so we're not going to be ruined by the increases.
