Your awareness of petrol prices?

Netcurtainnelly · 28/03/2026 19:25

How aware are you when you fill up your car if what it's costing you?

Talking to a family member yesterday, who uses their car to travel round for work, and they said they just fill up and don't bother really keeping track of the cost.

Surely if self employed, you'd need to know as you mean need to adjust your prices to your customers you visit.

Do you just fill up and pay or are you actively tracking the price.
AIBU to assume, someone who is self employed and visiting customers would be monitoring the costs?

I go to the one I know is cheapest but I don’t really keep track of how much I’m spending. It’s a necessary expense

FlyingPinkUnicorn · 28/03/2026 20:04

I am aware. I bought a new car just before this all kicked off. I needed a big car for towing. It was bad enough then filling up as was £120 for a tank and now closer to £160 and that gets about 450 miles (not towing, a lot less if I do!) 😳

Shade17 · 28/03/2026 20:02

I only put in £20 at a time so these price rises don’t affect me.

😂

Talipesmum · 28/03/2026 20:05

I’ve said YABU, to vote that I don’t pay a great deal of attention (I know which the better priced garages are and fill up there, or at more convenient ones if necessary). But YANBU if you check or if other people need to. It depends what you need to do with that info really. If you have to make the journeys there’s not much choice really.

For visiting customers and adjusting prices - surely it’s the sort of expense that you look at over time? If you’re monitoring business expenses, you look to see what you’ve been spending over 3 months, 6 months, and adjust accordingly? I don’t think people change their prices every few weekday depending on petrol prices unless you’re a taxi driver or haulier or something?

I'm not self employed but I don't take the blindest bit of notice really. It costs whatever it costs, and can't be avoided.

Unless you are very rural where you don't have any options at all, it's worth having an awareness of prices, especially just now, so if you see a garage offering a good price, you get fuel.

My local petrol station was selling petrol for 151.9p/l yesterday which was 11p p/l more expensive than cheapest price in town about 10 miles away. I had a meeting in the town, so topped up with the cheaper petrol while I was there.

Octavia64 · 28/03/2026 20:06

Electric car.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/03/2026 20:06

I’ve just gone part time to a job within easy 10min walking distance. (Opted for semi retirement). Saves me £200 in diesel under the new prices per month.

BIossomtoes · 28/03/2026 20:08

I noticed that our local Tesco had run out of diesel today. That doesn’t affect us but I made a mental note to fill up with petrol little and often now.

Badbadbunny · 28/03/2026 20:04

😂

Are you going to tell her or should I? Grin

Silverbirchleaf · 28/03/2026 20:09

I’m not self employed but I am aware of prices. I’m know which petrol stations are cheapest, but tend to go to the nearest one, unless I’m near one of the cheaper ones.

NewYearNewMee · 28/03/2026 20:10

I’m aware of it, as in I can see the price - doesn’t impact me filling up, I have no other option 😂

As someone who is self employed I’d hope they were calculating their prices with enough margin in to absorb the price rise in fuel (depending what the work is!) without it being a cost issue.

feellikeanalien · 28/03/2026 20:12

I live rurally so have been keeping a close eye. Local supermarket is charging £1.45 while BP is £1.56. Most expensive I've seen it is in a small rural garage which was charging £1.82. It's always more expensive there but that is crazy.

Anonomoso · 28/03/2026 20:13

It's gone up 46 pence at our local fuel station and 28 pence at our local Tesco.

Not something we pass on to the customer, just take a hit.

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 28/03/2026 20:13

I cover 12 sites for work and I am painfully aware that my mileage reimbursment is only just covering my fuel and the two new tyres I've just had to buy. I love my job but its a fine line at the moment. I only use the cheapest petrol station and I check prices most days so I can fill up dn route or on the way home without going too far out of my way.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 28/03/2026 20:14

I put just £30 in each time I fill up, usually that's a full tank but if not I don't put anymore in. No choice I need petrol, I'd rather just know how much I'm paying before I get there

Femalemachinest · 28/03/2026 20:14

I drive past a few on way to work. I have a quick glance if I need to fill up and go to cheapest but other than that I dont pay attention. Can't live without petrol so try not to get bothered by it

therockingbird · 28/03/2026 20:18

Well.. diesel is £1.79 here not that we have any. Queues at all the local supermarkets blocking up the roads - there’s a bit of a panic going on where I am.

TheFairyCaravan · 28/03/2026 20:18

We’ve got an EV and a petrol car so don’t use the petrol car much, however I do notice the price going up as I drive past the filling stations. It was almost £2 a litre, for diesel in 2022 so I’m hoping for, everyone’s sake, it doesn’t go up as far as that again.

RudolphTheReindeer · 28/03/2026 20:19

I don't track closely. It needs filling so I don't have any choice. I did wince at the price this week though.

BramStokey · 28/03/2026 20:19

Shade17 · 28/03/2026 20:02

I only put in £20 at a time so these price rises don’t affect me.

How does that work? 😂

I'm aware at the moment because it's all over the news. I don't normally track fuel prices though beyond knowing that it's much cheaper at the supermarket than on the motorway.

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 28/03/2026 20:21

Fill up and pay. It costs what it costs. We're not on a tight budget, and we want to be able to use the car. Can't be bothered driving around the county to save a couple of pence on fuel, I've got better things to do with my time.

CanWeAllJustGetOn · 28/03/2026 20:22

Amazed at so many not being aware or tracking closely. I feel painfully aware and very conscious of the cost. Perhaps I am more unlucky with my commute than I realised!

Ninerainbows · 28/03/2026 20:25

I'd no idea what the exact cost was before the war (somewhere around 1.25-1.35) but I'm tracking now.

BotterMon · 28/03/2026 20:31

Yep tracking as need fuel (red diesel in bulk) for agricultural stuff plus diesel cars/trucks as require the grunt. Sainsburys was 20p less than other places today.

CautiousLurker2 · 28/03/2026 20:33

If you go to gocompare local fuel prices you can enter your postcode and get cheapest prices . Difference of 15p a L within a 2mile radius where I am- £6 a tank. Absolutely monitoring prices - there is absolutely some price gouging given those price differences are Tesco/Sainsburys and a large Shell station in a Surrey town, ie not a remote countryside independent in the middle of nowhere.
