Your awareness of petrol prices?

How aware are you when you fill up your car if what it's costing you?

Talking to a family member yesterday, who uses their car to travel round for work, and they said they just fill up and don't bother really keeping track of the cost.

Surely if self employed, you'd need to know as you mean need to adjust your prices to your customers you visit.

Do you just fill up and pay or are you actively tracking the price.
AIBU to assume, someone who is self employed and visiting customers would be monitoring the costs?

I always know where the cheapest petrol is. It varies a lot too.
There is a small local garage I go past a lot which is often very competitive so I use that. Also a garage on the way to work that is often a good price.

We have a Costco card and the petrol there is always cheaper than anywhere else. But it's not on my usual round so I don't fill up there that often.

I recall saying to a colleague that I shopped around for petrol and they said "there's no point driving miles out of your way just to save a few pence.” well obviously not. I don't do that. If I am going past where the Costco is (about once a fortnight) I will fill up if I have time (often a big queue).

I should add I do a lot of driving – like 20k a year including a 50-mile round trip for work most days. So I fill up my baby car once or twice a week as a rule, hence being super aware.

Just for info – unleaded at Costco yesterday 138.9, nearby usually cheap Jet 145.9, cheapest supermarket nearby 141.9, very local Shell 154.9. So if you are using 40L a week that's a possible difference of more than £6 without going anywhere near a v £££ motorway services.

Surprised so many ppl don't check but maybe if you only fill up once a month you can afford the extra fiver.

I am aware - yesterday I was visiting friends and the diesel went up by 5 pence during my four hour stay - absolute joke

I live in London. Cars are a waste of money.

Silverfoxette · 29/03/2026 18:33

I’m going to be asking if I can work from home where possible to save money travelling. For example we have no customers in our place this week so I could easily work from home. I’m going to cut back on unnecessary journeying

voidcatsarethebest · 29/03/2026 18:36

I have a vague idea but I use maybe half a tank a month if that. My commute is an 8 mile round trip

BiscuitsCheeseBiscuits · 29/03/2026 18:41

I'm very aware and worried about it. Was already struggling financially and this isn't going to help. I'm also worried about the shortage that seems to be happening. Without reports in the press I've seen garages run out of fuel (both unleaded and diesel). Feel it's going to get worse before it gets any better.

Wish I could just absorb the cost and say well I have to do it anyway.

Sheknowsaboutme · 29/03/2026 18:47

Very. I fill up on payday then top up when down a quarter. I use a local independent retailer. Not supermarket

Catladywithacat · 29/03/2026 18:53

Usually no but I noticed today as I pass a shell, Tesco and bp that bp was lower than Tesco

Tracedom · 29/03/2026 19:23

Why bother to post, just to explain you do minimal mileage or drive a hybrid so the rising price of petrol doesn't affect smug little you?

Pinklemonade1 · 29/03/2026 19:29

It's gone up 40p a litre in just a few weeks round here so I'm very aware!

HappyMuma · 29/03/2026 19:35

I know I can’t get by without filling up so I just do it without checking the prices. I think it’s the same for most of my family/friends

Wipeywipey · 29/03/2026 20:53

I have to drive 240 miles every weekend so I pay attention - slow creep up is worrying but not as bad as it was a few years ago. I am very happy to have a couple of weeks off the long journey so less need to refill but worried it will be worse next month when the tankers that would have left are missing in port.

Always look and keep a log of fuel amount, mileage and costs, it's really high at the minute if anyone hasn't noticed!

BillyBites · 29/03/2026 21:50

I’m less worried about cost than I am about availability. On a usual week we don’t drive much but we have a couple of long-distance trips coming up and I’m slightly concerned about being able to fill up en route.

Aprilshowers13 · 29/03/2026 21:52

We just have a budget on it so no matter what the price we don't go over that budget

Aprilshowers13 · 29/03/2026 21:53

The situation is dire and I'm surprised no one on gov seems to be doing more about it.

Sorry, what?
The OP asked how aware we are and we answered the question with an explanation.

I’m not smug that I do minimal mileage, I’m stressed about remortgaging this year and living by myself on 28k but the OP didn’t ask about that

Agreed. They are rationing in Australia apparently. It’s not only the price is an actual shortage.
Without fertiliser though, the Autumn will be really expensive for food.

Shitonitagain · 29/03/2026 22:32

I don't track it or pay much attention.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 29/03/2026 22:37

I am aware of the cost but I can't change the amount I drive. I tend to put in about £12 a week. I only have a small car so get quite good mileage from it

celticprincess · 29/03/2026 23:09

I drive a lot for work. Last week probably 250 miles. Depends what I’ve got in. I’m employed though and get the usual 45p per mile. I was just saying the other day that mileage has been paid at that price for decades. I’ve started to notice differences so try and fill up at my usual supermarket where I can at least collect my points, or the Esso where I can also get points but the esso is much more expensive as usually more a service station type place - not the full on motorway ones but the one one petrol station near a small village where I’m heading to or from.

I am also still trying to work out if the E10 or E5 is better value. I was finding the cheaper one lasted less than the more expensive one. I’m not trialing since the prices have soared. I did get 1.42 the other day when I drove past somewhere else over 1.5.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 29/03/2026 23:29

I hardly need to drive and can go months without filling up. However, I've filled up for longish trips three times this month and have noticed the difference. I'm not normally a panic buyer but I did fill up today as well after returning from a long trip and it's reassuring to have a full tank which should last a good while.

Downsidesupside · 29/03/2026 23:34

When prices are going up, I fill up more frequently and try to keep the tank full. When they start to drop i will let the tank go low, and once they stabilise, then I fill as needed, usually weekly.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 29/03/2026 23:45

I don't think a lot of self employed builders don't know the price of petrol or their.mileage Because they charge so much. They don't need to.

As in " Yes Madame. The Price? That will be a £150 call out charge. Plus £65 an hour for labour And the cost of parts.

Oh. Yes and Vat at 20%
