Your awareness of petrol prices?

Netcurtainnelly · 28/03/2026 19:25

How aware are you when you fill up your car if what it's costing you?

Talking to a family member yesterday, who uses their car to travel round for work, and they said they just fill up and don't bother really keeping track of the cost.

Surely if self employed, you'd need to know as you mean need to adjust your prices to your customers you visit.

Do you just fill up and pay or are you actively tracking the price.
AIBU to assume, someone who is self employed and visiting customers would be monitoring the costs?

I cover 12 sites for work and I am painfully aware that my mileage reimbursment is only just covering my fuel and the two new tyres I've just had to buy. I love my job but its a fine line at the moment. I only use the cheapest petrol station and I check prices most days so I can fill up dn route or on the way home without going too far out of my way.

This. I am hoping that if the situation continues the company might consider upping our mileage allowance. Small chance but I can dream!

I only put in £20 at a time so these price rises don’t affect me.

This is my dads joke aswell 😁

There is the app to check the petrol prices. But I don't have a car but my partner does and while we do pay attention to the price and make comments about how expensive it is but we will still fill it up where it.is most convenient. We drive so little that it doesn't really make a difference.

aWeeCornishPastie · 30/03/2026 00:02

I don’t keep track at all

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/03/2026 00:10

I don’t have a car so no skin in the game, but I did notice on our local Facebook group earlier posts about several places actually being out of fuel today.

Mileage allowances are set by HMRC.

For fuel only, its reviewed every 3 months, Google advisory fuel rates hmrc.

For total running costs for using your own car, its been 45 p a mile for getting on for 30 years. It used to be quite generous and obviously should be reviewed.

However it probably wouldn't go up that much as despite recent price rises, fuel is still cheaper than it was in the early 2000s when I remember paying close to £2 a litre for diesel. A lot of people also pay less road tax now if they have a pre 2017 low emissions car. Although other costs like insurance and servicing have probably increased

Zanatdy · 30/03/2026 07:30

I never look at the price. I fill up once a month and put the same amount in. Tbh I mainly use the car for school runs which will end for good in June. I prefer to use public transport.

Shitonitagain · 30/03/2026 07:32

I remember in the 90s people stealing petrol from parked cars. It was so common back then!

I'm a bit worried about this happening again.

Shitonitagain · 30/03/2026 07:38

I can't afford public transport.
Buses are £6 return (adult) for town that's 3 miles away. No cycle paths or pavements on route either.
And £5 for a child's return!

£11 on buses just to pop into town. Nope!

Cel77 · 30/03/2026 07:55

I count to the pennies. I usually only put in what I can afford and what I need for the next 2 or 3 days to commute and ferry my kids around. I'm paid weekly so I budget weekly for this. I do the same for food shopping.

Jovilady22 · 30/03/2026 08:15

Petrol isn’t as bad as diesel but needs must. Hopefully we’ll be having a change of circumstances very soon and we’re talking about changing my car (fiesta) for an electric vehicle as I don’t travel very far

Bjorkdidit · 30/03/2026 08:20

If you don't travel very far, are you sure the extra cost of an electric vehicle is worth the saving on cheaper fuel?

I have a small petrol car and I worked out it would have been over a decade to recoup the extra purchase cost of a 2 YO electric car vs buying the same car with a petrol engine. And that's for 8k miles a year and assuming that the electric was so cheap it was effectively free.

If you can’t change it why bother
depending the business you can’t go fluctuating your prices and risk pissing off your customers
if you were a hairdresser doubt your customer would be happy paying a different amount every time also would you reduce your prices when price of fuel dropped

CatJump · 30/03/2026 08:25

I keep track of it. But I keep track of spending/prices in general.

ShiftySquirrel · 30/03/2026 08:28

Very, very aware. We've got one 20yo car that's diesel and are looking into petrol next.
The wiggle room in my wage just isn't there any more so I'm also job hunting. I love my job but needs must (primary support staff).

And yes, public transport is hugely expensive here too. If me and the two (older) teens go to the nearest town by bus it's £18! It's only 3 miles.

Aprilshowers13 · 29/03/2026 21:53

The situation is dire and I'm surprised no one on gov seems to be doing more about it.

Because Rachel is raking in the extra tax revenue!

Badbadbunny · 30/03/2026 11:23

You’d be the first to complain if the government subsidised fuel prices with taxpayers’ money.

ReyRey12 · 29/03/2026 23:49

This is my dads joke aswell 😁

Sadly some people actually don't understand it's a joke and genuinely think that they're not paying any more because £20 is still £20!

Exactly. I have a second job as a self employed cleaner and there's no way I would risk increasing my hourly rate...I can't afford to take the risk so I'll just have to suck it up.

JustAnotherWhinger · 30/03/2026 11:31

DH always lets me know which one is cheapest as he keeps an eye on the app. I try and fill up at Costco as much as possible, but no special trips to fill up as it’s far enough away to defeat the purpose.

Annoyingly atm the cheapest locally is one I don’t use as the mpg from their fuel is the lowest. One of the others is 19p/L more expensive than most

MandingoAteMyBaby · 30/03/2026 11:37

Happily driving an EV with 25% of my miles coming off my own roof.

Hopefully you’ll still have somewhere to drive it to…

RandomUsernameHere · 30/03/2026 13:44

I know which two petrol stations nearby are usually the cheapest, but other than that, no. It costs what it costs.

You’d hope they’re few and far between, not sure that someone who can’t understand something so straightforward should be in charge of a moving vehicle.
