AIBU to think people begrudge weekly food costs but spend more freely elsewhere?

People will spend money on subscriptions, takeaways, the cost of a weekly shop on a meal out, £10 on a candle but begrudge £80 on the week shop.

Food is one of the most important things to us as humans, it nourishes us and keeps us well. It should be a priority above most things we spend money on, not just an annoying necessity.

We have been lucky in the past with extremely cheap food costs and yes I know things have increased a lot and not in line with wages, but it’s not actually that bad if you don’t buy brands and cook.

I do appreciate a lot of people don’t have have room in their budget for any increases. I think my post is more aimed at those who whinge when they spend freely elsewhere.

I'm always surprised when people talk about a col crisis yet shops are always full and people are driving expensive cars. I think it's because people find money for the nice things but begrudge paying high costs for essentials.

Yes, and the inference really was very clear. S/he must think we’re all stupid.

Swings and roundabouts. Our food is far cheaper than other countries, yes. However our tax in every other aspect is often a lot higher. Not simply income, but fuel duty etc. As such, we pay less than some for food but we pay more than those sam countries in other areas.

We cannot keep paying more for every aspect of our lives and be told we should prioritise.

I spend without really thinking on food. I am a from-scratch sort if cook though, so that probably helps, and we don't eat much meat. I also just love food. I also spend much too freely on bloody Vinted, which I need to sort out. I don't spend freely on my kids. Horrible mother.

The person that has had the better diet over a sustained periodwill be in a better position to fight off infection, have a stronger immune system and be better placed to survive yes that is factually correct

I would argue age & mental resilience makes a big difference. Although no idea why I’m arguing with you as its clearly pointless.

food is my main focus, I would rather prioritise spending on that, over spending on non essential things. I would only eat out on special occasions, and never have delivered takeaways. I do believe in eating to the best of my ability, so focus on eating a mainly organic diet. I don't smoke, or drink alcohol regularly.

I know someone who goes to a small food bank every week, they also provide two hot meals a week (anyone can attend).
I know for a lot of people it’s housing and debt that trips them into food poverty. The 24 month new phone, the paying minimum on Kanda etc.
I have a cappuccino every week but I also have a nespresso machine and milk frother and buy good quality coffee from a local roaster for my drip cup.
Having no treats is a horrible soul crushing way to live.
Nails etc are small manageable treats.
