AIBU to think people begrudge weekly food costs but spend more freely elsewhere?

People will spend money on subscriptions, takeaways, the cost of a weekly shop on a meal out, £10 on a candle but begrudge £80 on the week shop.

Food is one of the most important things to us as humans, it nourishes us and keeps us well. It should be a priority above most things we spend money on, not just an annoying necessity.

We have been lucky in the past with extremely cheap food costs and yes I know things have increased a lot and not in line with wages, but it’s not actually that bad if you don’t buy brands and cook.

I do appreciate a lot of people don’t have have room in their budget for any increases. I think my post is more aimed at those who whinge when they spend freely elsewhere.

You’re being ridiculous. My point was only if you’re in a famine situation and you’re full of nutrients. You might be okay.
You don’t get to keep your shoes or your candles.

dont you buy shoes then? Interesting.

Solutionssought2026 · 28/03/2026 17:20

Of course you can.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen cancer ripped through people who were in poor shape to begin with 100% down to their diet and lack of exercise. Dead within months.
Versus affluent people who were well nourished beforehand and came out equally unscathed at the other end.
invest in candles if you prefer but in the end, maybe you wish you made different choices

This is fake news

not sure if you are aware but I like most people am able to afford both food and candles. sorry you are from such poverty, but I think it’s clouded your view of food.

@Solutionssought2026

Your reference to Bergen-Belsen is so offensive and I think you’re being deliberately inflammatory.

People didn’t have a better or worse chance there because they failed to “invest” in nutrition beforehand. They were deliberately starved, brutalised, and deprived of all control over their conditions.

You are essentially putting a degree of blame on the people who died there.

THIS.

That post literally makes no sense whatsoever. If I was impoverished I wouldn’t be limiting the benefits of eating well I’d be eating whatever I could.
And cooking it with the candle

What a load of twaddle. You’re basically saying anyone who has died of cancer had it coming because they didn’t eat healthily enough. You’re completely ignoring that not all cancers are equal. Some types are so aggressive, and caught late even the healthiest-living people wouldn’t stand a chance.

I didn’t say anything of the sort never
THIS
There was no blame attached to anything whatsoever merely the point that if the shit hits the fan your trainers and your candles will be of no bloody used to you

Spaghettea · 28/03/2026 16:28

Of course not. But saying organic meat and milk are too expensive but then having a holiday is weird.
I can't afford holidays but I can stretch to a few bits of organic food.

But it’s legitimate to think it is too expensive for what it is and therefore not worth it. Do you think if they stopped going on holiday, they would spend the money on overpriced (as they would see it) food?

Just because that is important to YOU, it’s irrelevant to others.

You could give me £1,000 and I wouldn’t spend a penny of it on organic food.

You literally just wished me dead.

You appear to think buying candles or shoes means people don’t have enough money left to buy healthy food

I agree. The disturbing part is that people seem to think we should all spend our money the same way.

Food is a necessity but it’s not something a lot of people want to spend a lot of time and money on.

MN is always full of people who don’t seem to understand that not everyone is the same 🤣

Modern science is working out well for me 😁, I had a bowel growth removed 2 years ago before it turned cancerous and get regular check ups to see if any more tumours had grown - modern science prevented my cancer woop woop

stop now. Between that and blaming those killed in the concentration camps you’re not covering yourself in glory.
