AIBU to think people begrudge weekly food costs but spend more freely elsewhere?

People will spend money on subscriptions, takeaways, the cost of a weekly shop on a meal out, £10 on a candle but begrudge £80 on the week shop.

Food is one of the most important things to us as humans, it nourishes us and keeps us well. It should be a priority above most things we spend money on, not just an annoying necessity.

We have been lucky in the past with extremely cheap food costs and yes I know things have increased a lot and not in line with wages, but it’s not actually that bad if you don’t buy brands and cook.

I do appreciate a lot of people don’t have have room in their budget for any increases. I think my post is more aimed at those who whinge when they spend freely elsewhere.

It’s the nutrients that quite literally feed your cells that would make you in a better place to survive any kind of disaster. That’s the investment.
I always think of the piles and piles of belongings at Belsen etc
It all counted for absolutely shit in the end, but if you were well nourished to begin with, I guess you stood a better chance.

this is absolutely untrue. You can not be in a “better place” to survive any disaster through healthy food. This is the puritanical orthorexia- the idolisation of food- that has caused so many mental health problems in females.

you can argue that consuming organic food might mean it takes you longer to starve to death in a famine but that isn’t factual.

Organic has fuck all to do with it. Don’t peddle such nonsense.

Of course you can.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen cancer ripped through people who were in poor shape to begin with 100% down to their diet and lack of exercise. Dead within months.
Versus affluent people who were well nourished beforehand and came out equally unscathed at the other end.
invest in candles if you prefer but in the end, maybe you wish you made different choices

cancer rips through & kills healthy people

NoSoupForU · 28/03/2026 17:22

The delivery companies like Uber Eats are absolutely booming. Every time I pass a McDonalds there's a queue. Lots of people are spending money.

People have seasonal decor in their houses. Spring themed nick nacks and autumn tea towels. So much is spent on completely unnecessary shite.

When takeaways and fast food starts struggling I'll be more inclined to take the cost of living crisis more seriously.

Skinny marathon runners get hit by cars as well.
Doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t be better place to survive any kind of natural disaster or man-made by being healthier to begin with and eating better quality food is part of that

So you think eating nutritious food is more important than what seat you happen to be in if you are in a plane crash?

Or proximity to a tsunami/higher ground is less important than organic food?

Obviously not
But with everything else being equal you both getting thrown from the plane at the same time and landing in the jungle
The person that has had the better diet over a sustained periodwill be in a better position to fight off infection, have a stronger immune system and be better placed to survive yes that is factually correct
Otherwise, we’d be putting all babies on formula from day one and nobody would be interested in lamenting the benefits of breastmilk for example

And my cousin who was fit and healthy and dead in 3 months? If she had eaten organic she wouldn’t have left 2 toddlers behind? My arse.

Diet is undisputedly linked to better outcomes when it comes to health that’s undeniable

No offence intended but lots of people die of cancer. My uncle died of cancer. My grandfather died of cancer.
Both of them had dreadful diets

come on. Where’s the sources that people who ate organic survived the gas chambers in bigger numbers than those who ate non-organic.

You’re being ridiculous. My point was only if you’re in a famine situation and you’re full of nutrients. You might be okay.
You don’t get to keep your shoes or your candles.

If your entire family has died of cancer I would’ve thought you’d be open to looking at anything that might act preventatively for you

Organic food won’t make a pin of difference and the only thing that helped is modern medicine. Stop peddling nonsense.

Batties · 28/03/2026 17:40

@Solutionssought2026

Your reference to Bergen-Belsen is so offensive and I think you’re being deliberately inflammatory.

People didn’t have a better or worse chance there because they failed to “invest” in nutrition beforehand. They were deliberately starved, brutalised, and deprived of all control over their conditions.

You are essentially putting a degree of blame on the people who died there.
