Huh? OP didn't say they are screaming their heads off.

They're kicking a ball against a fence. Annoying perhaps, but it's hard to know what the actual noise is like from the post.

Kids kicking a ball around their own garden is normal and doesn't in itself mean parents are doing a bad job, as OP is implying.

The noise is something like:

Whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump

Whump whump

whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump

whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump-whump-whump whump whump whump whump whump whump whump

Very rubbish parenting if you think DC kicking football against your neighbours fence is okay. If you don’t have a big enough garden so they don’t do that, why don’t you move to somewhere with no neighbours and an acre or more of garden.

I assume you wouldn’t accept a neighbour continually hitting your fence so why is it okay for your DC to do it?

And there is a happy medium between children screaming, kicking footballs against fences and staying indoors all day on screens.

rockinrobins · 27/03/2026 10:13

@OooPourUsACupLove That did make me laugh 😂

I get it, but you're not the OP and you haven't heard it, how long it's going on for or how loud it is. I used to get kids kicking a ball against the wall of my house. Yes, it can be very annoying. I understand.

But at the same time, kids need to be able to kick a ball, and they are in their own garden. It's good that they are outside.

Noise issues need a bit of give and take on both sides and accusing the parents of not parenting well is only going to rub people up the wrong way. The bit that gets me is that OP says they should be taken to the park. Perhaps the parents are busy sometimes and the kids entertain themselves. They don't need to be taken to the park by an adult every time they need fresh air. They have a garden to play in.

Of course it's not OK to constantly kick a ball against the neighbour's fence but if OP has a problem then she needs to talk to the parents, and not accuse them of being bad parents just because kids are playing in the garden.

No, but pps have touched on the screaming and I was curious to know if that pp’s attitude was as entitled on that front.

I live in the row of terraced cottages in a cul-de-sac. There's a big grassy area in front of the houses, and the kids all come out in summer, with footballs and rugby balls (boys and girls, these days), and some little girls bring out a table and chairs and some have some kind of teddy-bears picnic, and I think that's lovely. Even when a boy broke my bedroom window with a ball a while back, but it all got sorted out amicably enough. It's great to see kids out in the open air, having fun.

Agreed and accidents happen, as long as it’s sorted, which it was.

There's this thing called copy and paste....

But I am making a deliberate point with these posts, which is that a relentless whump whump whump going on and on is interrupting and dominating. It's very easy to say "just ignore it" without appreciating how intrusive it is.

My posts are attempting to convey that reality of intrusiveness and how it dominates whatever else you might be trying to do.

FWIW my house backs on or overlooks about 14 gardens. In the summer there are always kids playing, adult parties and bbqs, sometimes full on soundsystems. And I'm ok with that, live and let live. Balls being kicked or hit relentlessly against your wall is a different proposition.

As per usual the misers are out in force.
Ever wonder why the birth rate in the UK is dropping? It's because among our aging grumpy population, children and families simply aren't welcome now.

Once upon a time families would have been the majority in most neighbourhoods and the sound of kids playing outdoors, yes with a bit of shrieking and laughter, would have just been the norm.
Now our demographics mean grumpy pensioners outnumber everyone else and their negative attitudes to children and families are all we hear.

I love the sound of children playing out - let's all send the kids out plenty over easter and reclaim our neighbourhoods as places for families!!

A bit of shrieking and laughter, yes.

But that concerted, top-of the-lungs 'AAAAH! AAAAH! AAAAH!' thing some children find it necessary to do while playing?* To mind about that isn't being a 'misery'. And it hasn't always been a feature of children playing, it's relatively recent. Presumably you're not defending that sort of screaming?

(* I'm not referring to SEN here, I realise there are different factors in the mix there. I'm talking about when kids scream for the sheer hell of it.)

dreamiesformolly · 27/03/2026 11:10

BatchCookBabe · 26/03/2026 20:41

Yes, you can tell who has all the 'spirited children' on here ...

It's ludicrous to be calling people 'miserable' for not wanting to listen to a thud thud thud of a football against a fence, (or a garage door,) and not wanting to listen to shrill, high-pitched screams from children. That is not just children playing, no-one minds that.

A poster asked 'why do some parents let their children just scream and scream outside?' Answer: because they don't care. They don't care about the neighbours, and the effect their feral brats are having on people, and they don't care about their children.

Far easier to shove their children outside onto the trampoline, or cheap plastic swing and slide set, let them kick balls at fences and garage doors, or whizz up and down the footpaths on little scooters running into elderly and disabled people, (whilst screaming blue murder for no reason whatsover,) than to actually spend time with them. The parents of these young children are far too busy on their phone/tikrok/instagram/talking to their mates/watching Netflix, and basically doing ANYthing but parenting their own children.

Thankfully there is only one such family in my road of 16 properties like this, and they don't live next door to me, but the kids do charge up and down the road some days, just screaming blue fecking murder, so you can't hear yourself think.

And NO I am not buying noise cancelling headphones! I shouldn't have to!

Don generalise. I’m in my 70s. I like to hear children playing out. There are grumpy people of all ages. What I wouldn’t like is people playing loud music after 11pm, during the day a bit of noise is normal.

Sunloungerhogger · 27/03/2026 13:16

Our new neighbour’s children do the football against the fence bang bang bang - super annoying. First time the ball came over shortly after they’d first moved in - came round with his mum, v polite - can I have my ball back - of course no issues. Then last week - knock on the door as it had come over the fence - I didn’t answer as I was on a teams call - so then he just starts going into our front garden (don’t know how that would help as ball out the back) - so then I have to answer the door - I was slightly grumpy and said I’m in the middle of a meeting, so it will have to be later that I get it. Bit later my husband gets and throws it back to them - no issues. But then 10 mins later it’s over again - I was grumpy I’ll admit - my office is right next to our front door, if I’m WFH I’m still working and I don’t want to be interrupted all day to throw their ball back. The additional context is I think his parents are entitled lazy and selfish because they always park in the visitor bay between our houses despite having a perfectly big driveway for their two massive cars. Hmmm methinks we’re going to find these new neighbours annoying in several ways…..

Little kids having a kickabout - not, in general, noisy or annoying

12 yo plus dad doing target practice up against the fence for hours on end, when they know full well that we are attempting to sit on the patio the other side of the fence about 6ft from where the ball is continually whumping - really, really fucking annoying and entitled, bordering on distressing when it's Every Fucking Day, even when the sun is not out. I swear our old NDN thinks his kid is the next Lionel Messi, it was ridiculous
