AIBU to think it was never that complicated to define a woman.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has ruled that eligibility for the women’s category of Olympic events will now be limited to biological females, starting from the LA 2028 Games.

AIBU to think the category ‘women’ was never complicated and the obfuscation by certain governing bodies has compromised fairness in sport for women.

Examples of obfuscation include claims that genital checking would be needed or that biological men with lowered testosterone would be on an even playing field with biological women.

AIBU to think it was never complicated to define a woman and a cheek swab is all it takes.

I wonder if it's the case that the CAIS individuals that we see in women's sport are like Lin Yu-ting, from gene pools which, after a normal puberty, tend to produce naturally fine boned men with little body and facial hair, so that it's easier to claim that puberty has not happened?

good point. And maybe Yu-ting has said to World Boxing, “Actually, I have CAIS, not PAIS” and they’ve looked at him and thought, fair enough.

What this ruling has clarified for me, is that of all the XY DSDs only 5 alpha reductase deficiency and CAiS/PAIS are presenting in elite female sport, apparently at an 80:20 ratio. So 80% of the erstwhile male DSD athletes are gone. Some of the 5 alpha reductase cohort may pretend to have CAIS, but there’s an enzyme assay. Arguments for disorders such as Swyers are just silly - they’d be allowed as no male puberty but they are physically underdeveloped and won’t be in elite sport.

It’s worrying though, that the line between C And P AIS seems blurred. It’d be interesting to see if the dodgy athletics scouts switch from poor African villages (looking for 5 ARD) to Asian locations, knowing that, to Western eyes, a finer boned, less hairy male PAIS athlete will be more likely to pass as CAIS.

Makes a lot of sense. I think I'm becoming a little bit fixated on Lin Yu-ting because to me he looks so obviously male (especially in comparison to Thaiwanese men and women) and has a clear adams apple and the decision to allow him to box again is so recent.

I'll take all this back and apologise humbly if he is XX, but my current belief is that if he was XX that would have been in the public domain by now, and he would not have failed earlier genetic testing by WBO.

It does feel as if CAIS is a huge loophole that needs to be closed.
