Mumsnet race to the bottom

I have noticed on MN there has been a real race to the bottom mentality. To be clear I am not talking about budget advice threads that can be incredibly helpful.

I am talking about the posters that think working people should be so accepting of a miserable life.

Again I am not talking about 5 star holidays in The Maldives, 26 plate Range Rovers, or shopping at Harrods Food Hall.

Somebody posts about the price of coffee then the response is to make your own and bring it with you. Somebody posts about the price of a cafe lunch on a family day out and the response is bring your own sandwiches. Somebody posted about the cost of running a car and the answer is cycle. Like that's realistic in a rainy December.

When did people get so accepting that life had to be miserable?

OP posts:

It is my experience. Until recently I walked over two miles to the shops (each way).

allchange5 · 25/03/2026 15:42

Why do people think they are the 'poverty police' on here? I find it so odd that people have an expectation that everyone lives (or should live) to the same standard of living as them. It's like they can't compute that life isn't like that. Never was and never will be.

It's like if someone posts about something totally innocuous - eg, their garden fence - they'll get a load of people coming in for no other reason than to say, "Well at least you have a garden..."

What is the point? You can't post about anything because the poverty police will be out to tell you to stop 'stealth boasting.' And woe betide you in particular if you happen to live in London or the SE and complain about anything. Anything whatsoever. And under no circumstances should you ever post anything about house prices! You will be told to move to Northern Scotland.

@Cuttingthroughredtape why are you making things up?

Fine but don’t extrapolate that to millions of people…

My dad was born in 1933 and grew up very poor in a Canadian industrial town. He got his first job at about age 11 and worked solidly all through school and uni.

Even he expressed astonishment that David Copperfield walks from Highgate to the City of London and back every day for work!

I am not. Up until recently I have always walked. It also wasn't rare originally.

I walk my dogs over two miles every day. It takes me less than an hour even at my age. No way did I - or anyone else I know - walk five miles or more to work.

😆

Maybe it should be accepted that we all have different experiences...which includes different finances.

dinbin · 25/03/2026 15:47

@Cuttingthroughredtape

This is what you made up

This clearly shows how the younger generation are clueless about the levels of poverty the so called wealthy boomer and silent generations experienced. How did they better themselves, a 2 hour walk to work (each way) was normal and work was a 6 day week. Nowadays they jump in a car for a journey less than a mile

And you have the gall to label others clueless!

dinbin · 25/03/2026 15:49

Are we now talking biblical times?!

Walking is not stealth boasting.
I can no longer walk long distances and I miss it dearly. It kept me fit and also saved money.

In another post I said an hour and a half if you walked fast. Do you still think I am lying?

To be honest a lot of these questionable degrees are actually very relevant for many businesses in the world as it is today - maybe not so much 15 years ago but in this current world having a strong understanding of social communication, media bias , political nous and buying psychology/marketing etc are a damn site more useful in commerce than something like classics etc - I must admit I had an English lit grad from a decent university in my business and was suprised at their complete lack of general knowledge , personally I would make a well rounded general studies long module a part of any degree or even A levels

The history professor I dated was very much a One trick pony. Neither use nor ornament in the real world

Yes, you are lying to say it was normal to walk 3 hours daily to work.

Of perhaps misinformed, confused. Take your pick but for heavens sake stop doubling down.

I can say you are lying to even suggest that. The Internet has really ruined people. I cannot comprehend why you would think someone walking.a relatively long distance is a lier.

Maybe try walking in someone else's shoes.

I am baffled at what you are talking about?

You may have walked to the moon but it wasn’t normal for everyone else.

Back then it was normal. Now it isn't as prevalent unless it is a Sunday trek for the majority.

What do you have against walking? It is quite normal. It is form of exercise than can easily be incorporated into someone's life.

If I said I played tennis would that be believable.

It was never normal. How many more times?
