I live in the North East. The local paper published an article yesterday about someone applying to turn a shop near me into a "large co-living development' with 18 rooms and communal area. Aimed at young professionals apparently and they're denying it's a HMO.

It's obviously a HMO

There's no parking. The space is small. It's 3 minutes walk from a primary school. I've looked up the developers - they're based in London.

Would you object?

These developments are popping up in my area, and they are very popular. They have 'content creating rooms', social spaces, private rooms you can book for private use, gyms and so on. They are very expensive, not going to be attracting anyone on benefits (so no asylum seekers, which let's face it, is the issue here) and the lack of car parking space is called 'sustainable living'.

Funnily enough there was an article last week saying the demand for these tiny flats has gone through the floor. In Wandsworth they have built 20,000 of these Co-living spaces in the last 10 years and no one wants them. People who bought can't sell and have lost money on them.

It's very new in my city, and the novelty is currently very high. Perhaps as time goes on it will wear off.

I cant read that article but it appears to be about home buyers, these schemes in Sunderland are room rentals.

You responded to someone talking about the room rentals being very popular, by citing an article that says that the purchase of the 'flats' is not very popular any more - in a different location.

Where exactly, what road?

In Sheffield. Im not putting their addresses on social media.
Are you under the impression that anywhere north of London doesn't have young professionals or something? Or do you think we can all afford to buy a house at 18 up here?

Why is it top secret

No Im not under that impression. Why would I be

Im interested to know where it is, what it is and what it looks like, whats the problem with say where it is given you introduced it in the first place

What makes you think there's a problem? I was responding to the OPs claim that young professionals dont live in that type of housing.

SittingNextToIt · 23/03/2026 13:18

This cave thing happened in our village in the south east with 47 complaints about parking and such and was rejected and HMO now in making

Mama2many73 · 23/03/2026 13:42

OP, we live in a similar area a few miles apart. Locally they tried to do similar at Easington Lane (not my area but several friends live there) which already has some major issues. It was going to be rooms with shared facilities. Can't recall exactly how it was being termed but locals believed it would be an HMO as ahalf way house, from prison, drugs, addiction etc. A man had actually been murdered in the building and then it was set on fire!
Severalfriends went to the open meetings , well versed in what the company were suggesting and claims of 'oh we did this at.....' but when it came to it they hadn't because people there had also objected massively.
They had NO interest in the area or its issues already. They weren't local, saw a big site (large ex residential home) and wanted a profit. The local councillors (and the police i believe) were at the meetings and spoke up for the local community. It never went ahead and I think it was set on fire again!
I know that several areas of Sunderland have more than their fare share of HMOs which HAVE brought more issues to those areas. On a positive because it IS a large development then info has got to be out there and there should be consultations etc. A smaller HMO ie a terrace house doesn't need this and even police do not know about them unless there's trouble !
Id get in touch with your local councillors (even better if they live there!!) and see what they know etc.

This is such an odd exchange @likelysuspect. @Hallamule simply said she has colleagues that live in co-living housing and you are demanding to know exactly where that is so that you can investigate it, for what purpose?

Google co-living developments in Sheffield (or elsewhere) if you want to see what they look like.

Im intrested because it was put forward as an example of it working, but with little recognition of the difference in areas. So Im interested in where it is.

Its not an odd exchange unless you think conversation and exploration is an odd exchange.

Demanding? I asked a question. Its a chat forum.

And no, these places are not top secret. People propose something and then double down and wont talk any more about it. Its a shame becuase thats then the end of the discussion
