Starting a thread for a bit of fun -

If it wasn’t for Mumsnet I would never…

Here’s mine - Left my husband 😱

What’s yours?

I would never have known about matched betting - I made £14k in 2 years and as a single parent it was very much needed

24Dogcuddler · 20/03/2026 21:38

Wouldn’t have been able to continue to use my professional knowledge and experiences of SEN to support and advise parents ( and personal parenting experience) following my unplanned early retirement after our daughter’s terminal diagnosis.

Kept my sanity through multiple miscarriages.
Stored my laundry in one of the pillow cases.
Known about BorrowBox.
Found my favourite daal recipe.
Been as prepared for breastfeeding.
Found the beyond sleep training Facebook group.

I’d have left my first husband a lot earlier if I’d found MN back then. I might not have married him tbh.

Oh please share your daal recipe x

Mn definitely encouraged me to retrain quickly after I had my last baby. Seeing all the women be financially devastated when their previously lovely DH decides he's done with family life (and usually become nasty) opened my eyes to the fact no-one is safe relying on a partner for security.

Dunking in the penis beaker of life 😂

Olive567 · 20/03/2026 21:46

...got my ducks in a row and left my long term 'DP' of 25 years.
Thank you Mumsnet!
There was a big age /power imbalance in our relationship. I finally realised I was being financially shafted. I plugged away for few years while DC grew up, managed to get my finances in order, buy a house and get out. Still find it hard to believe that i found the energy to do it sometimes.
I didn't post about my own situation but seeing other women go through similar experiences to me was eye opening.
I'd always tended to defer to exDP and his gaslighting ways and put downs and was full of doubt about my own perceptions. It's probably why I had a 'pit in my tummy' for 20+ years - something was amiss but i was not acknowledging it. Finally, reading MN, the clouds began to part. Will be forever grateful x

Putitinanenvelope · 20/03/2026 21:48

Yes there’s a lot of nonsense and made up stuff on MN but there’s good stuff as well.
I have found the other Christmas crazy folk on the Christmas Board who share the joy and support each other so much.
I would never have laughed so much.
Really learned from other peoples experiences, how to see things from a different perspective.

Peoplehuvtaeknow1 · 20/03/2026 21:48

like other pp, I would never have gone NC with my toxic sisters. The stately homes thread has been a lifesaver for me. Learning how to 'grey rock' changed my life!
Thanks MN!

DisappearingGirl · 20/03/2026 21:50

Been radicalised :)

pointythings · 20/03/2026 21:52

Got through the end of my marriage with my sanity intact.

Vintageblueribbon · 20/03/2026 21:53

If if had mumsnet in my life 20 years ago,I would have dumped the cocklodger I was shacked up with and seen him for the parasite he is

Thanks to mumsnet,I recognise what the relationship was and I can now see them a mile away (dodged a few after him)

When trans became a 'thing' I was all 'live and let live'

Thanks to mumsnet,I now understand that some just want to trample all over womens rights and shove us back in our box

In fact its thanks to mumsnet that I can see most men want that and can again spot the 'red pill' wankers (and depressingly, there are many)

This site has also helped with my feelings about my narcissistic mother and enabling family

Me being the scapegoat was never my fault

dapsnotplimsolls · 20/03/2026 21:54

Learned what an AGP is and associated nonsense.

Discovered the joys of watching MAFSAus live and commenting.

SerafinasGoose · 20/03/2026 21:55

Put a bog brush in the dishwasher.

No, not really. I lied.

Eyesopenwideawake · 20/03/2026 21:58

Found my birth father and three half siblings.

DeQuin · 20/03/2026 22:01

To echo a couple of PPs: several years later still think about laundry being darked on (is now in our family lexicon!) and adding Mumsnet to the end of any Google search. Has been the source of so much great practical advice and has made adulting so much easier.,

Sowhatywhaty · 20/03/2026 22:01

Got a back bone and stood up for myself in my marriage. I used to tolerate phrases like “I’ve done the dishwasher for you” before Mumsnet! I felt validated by some of the threads on here. Oh & I still chuckle about the woman who gave her husband a shopping list that had loo rolls on it & he came home with 98 bread roll and said sorry this is all they had Grin

timestressed · 20/03/2026 22:02

Found a group of feminists who became my friends, we chat on an app every day, support each other and meet every so often.

Shuffletoesxtreme · 20/03/2026 22:08

Bought my heated throw
and foot warmer
and dehumidifier
and Himalayan salt pipe

all of which have hugely improved my life!

CaffeinatedMum · 20/03/2026 22:11

Started mounjaro

Had my second child… I mean I probably would have eventually but I’m sure it’s the tips on the conception board that helped lead me conceiving when I did

Discovered the genius that is frozen mashed potato!!!

Sweetbeansandmochi · 20/03/2026 22:12

• Back in the day - bought a Babylis Big Hair (it was good!)

  • Had a wake up call that both me and my husband are quite high maintenance princesses (I agree but it took someone to be blunt)
  • Found a group of women who could articulate what I thought was obviously true and I feel glad to have gone through the years to have got here (which is no where near as bad as 7 odd years ago)
  • Realised how important financial security is and sorted out my pension
hazelberry · 20/03/2026 22:14

Never have known that so many women were scared to open their front door.

Penis beaker was one of the worst things to happen to MN.

ThatPearlkitty · 20/03/2026 22:16

heard of a penis beaker

I’d never have heard about penis cups 😳

OK, up to now me either (off to google and hope I don't regret it 😀). So thanks MN - and you!
