Starting a thread for a bit of fun -

If it wasn’t for Mumsnet I would never…

Here’s mine - Left my husband 😱

What’s yours?

Realise that there are people who ask rhetorical questions and put "no?" on the end.

And that I would find this "no?" inexplicably irritating and smug and am forever grateful I've never met anyone in real life who does this.

OK, up to now me either (off to google and hope I don't regret it 😀). So thanks MN - and you!

If you scroll back a bit I put a link for someone else - it’s in classics

Learned how to build boundaries with toxic people.

Learned about 'the script'

Educated about AGP.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 20/03/2026 22:29

Appreciated just how serious was the impact of my ex's alcoholism.

Seen how a notable proportion of women absolutely despise men.

Positive : figured out what was causing my toddler such discomfort just after we’d arrived at a remote holiday cottage — everyone who replied kindly and with good advice and managed to diagnose him at a distance will have my eternal gratitude.

Negative: realised how many women are in unequal and abusive relationships, and aren’t even aware of it.

Seconded on the negative one - I find it shocking and feel enraged and sad on their behalf.

Positives: received so much kindness and support, stories of hope and good advice from strangers including in those dark dark hours in the middle of the night when I was going out of my mind with worry when my DH had a serious accident.

laughed over all the CF stories, they’re my favourites, and the stock MN phrases.

found a place where I could read well articulated arguments from intelligent people holding similar views to me on the trans debate - I mean particularly early on when it was basically verboten to utter such heresy anywhere as TWA not W. It was reassuring to read I wasn’t some mad bigot and plenty of very reasonable and sensible sounding people felt the same and could articulate precisely why.

Sunloungerhogger · 20/03/2026 22:33

Oh yeah and bought a dehumidifier - it’s amazing.

frecklemcspeckles · 20/03/2026 22:33

Bought Waripa pants..best decision of my adult (40+) life after being an m&s pants wearer for decades.

Adding Ivermectin to my skincare regime... Took several years off me!!

Never believed how many women had infantilised waste of space partners / husbands who left them to do everything and still wondered were they unreasonable to suspect a tiny amount of support (at best) or not scorn and spite. Terrifying!!

blankcanvas3 · 20/03/2026 22:33

Got through my brother’s death. The messages on here were so supportive and lovely, every time I checked there was something new and genuinely it got me through it. I was overwhelmed by the love and support shown by total strangers when I felt like my own family couldn’t understand me. I somehow remember all of their usernames and I smile whenever I see them post on another thread!

Discovered and bought c1000 new bottles of perfume 😂

Known how many things people find annoying, unacceptable or GRIM
It's made me realize that people could be judging me for all sorts of things 😂

Oh yes. Every thing I do is judged on MN.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/03/2026 22:41

Found a home for my NDN's cat.

Spent so many hours of my retirement mindlessly scrolling

I think we are twins separated at birth 🤣🤣

Parat · 20/03/2026 23:08

Realised how desperately sick I really was in my first pregnancy and felt confident to ask for tablets from the doctor and not be fobbed off like I had been by everyone I'd seen up to 16 weeks.

Thank you to everyone on the hyperemesis threads. You gave me the confidence to advocate for myself during one of the worst times of my life.

Anonanonanonagain · 20/03/2026 23:12

Started snapping my fingers when I think I am going to fart. I cannot no matter what I do forget about 'snapped and farted'.

Wonder if that was from my recommendation (Wirarpa sp? pants) I’ve recommended them so many times!

Could have been! I don't actually remember who it was just on a thread of things you learned from mumsnet and it came up so often I thought I had to check it out. The elastic comfort and scoop in are all amazing!! The bigger the brief the better too!!

iwasyoungonce · 21/03/2026 00:02

Bought a mooncup and used it for 15 years (until menopause)
Put 3 bin liners in the kitchen bin at a time when they run out
Learnt to be less judgmental
Spent so many nights shaking with laughter reading hilarious anecdotes, trying not to wake up DH

randomchap · 21/03/2026 00:03

know that you could cancel cheques

seven201 · 21/03/2026 00:23

I don’t think I’d have my second child. I had many years of secondary infertility and two women on the infertility board suggested a particular test (that my fertility clinic didn’t offer and the 3 different specialists I saw didn’t mention) and it found a fixable problem. I had surgery the. could get pregnant, but not stay pregnant and the infertility board recommended a recurrent miscarriage clinic. Eventually I had my daughter. I definitely wouldn’t have this child (she’s 2.5 now), maybe I would have got there eventually without MN but I was on the older side, so possibly not!

Morepositivemum · 21/03/2026 00:28

Found half of my skincare and realised the bad reactions my skin has to hilariously most skincare for people with roseacea is not just me! Also I wouldn’t have found the phrase give your head a wobble, which has made me smile and also calmed me down when getting overwhelmed!

Me too, I felt prepared and lost any fear.

Yes, the nurse I spoke to said that the stuff was awful but not how awful it was.

If I hadn't read the thread on MN then I would never have bought the elderflower cordial and would not have been able to drink it as the instructions just said you can use squash etc which would have not disguised the taste at all.
