Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

They will be making up that school day on another day. A teaching day is not lost.

When... a weekend ? 😂

lol. So you are suggesting that these people coming to Britain would rather the British Empire still existed and think that their countries were better under British rule??? Now they’re not under British rule they think the next best thing is to come to Britain? Well that’s a whole new take I’ve never seen before, not something I agree with and glad the Empire started to disintegrate well before most people alive now were born. Gives everyone a chance to move on. It’s not great one culture striding into another and imposing their culture on the host as often happens during empires

India was the richest country in the world before Britain colonised it and left behind division and death.

Why shouldn't the people from the sub-continent come to where they speak the language and are familiar with the culture?

Because the population of India is 1.47 billion 😂

Oh, that old chestnut.

Old being the operative word! Anyway I’m off to move to Italy- bloody Romans what have they done for us?

Cat1202 · 18/03/2026 15:50

A supplier of mine at work told me proudly today that he is a racist! Wasn’t shocked that he was but shocked he said it! He’s about to go to Australia to visit his daughter who has moved there, I should’ve said maybe she’ll experience racism being an immigrant herself! Don’t think he’d see it though

Its not racist to criticise Islam though.

Just as it is not racist to criticise Israel. Nor would it be racist to criticise theological issues within Judaism, Christianity, or any other religion.

I think people tend to conflate "Muslim" with "middle Eastern" and base their criticism on that...which IS racist.

When... a weekend ? 😂

Pupils celebrating Eid receive authorised religious observance absence, as mandated by government.

If a school chose to close, they can re-assign an INSET day, use an existing contingency day if the school built any into its calendar or adjust the calendar slightly, so that it still meets the 190 teaching days.

But Brits are still causing havoc in the world, arming regimes with weapons.

You can take immigrants and refugees as reparation.

We aren't causing havoc anywhere.

Loads of countries sell weopons, France is currently ranked as the world's second-largest arms exporter, after the United States.

Tell me a predominantly Muslim country thst would tolerate a Mass in a public area? None is the answer. The UK however is fantastically diverse and inclusive and allow all manners or religious events in public places. You should be proud.

Why would you stay in a ‘community’ where people make no attempt to learn English? Would you feel comfortable in that environment?

Where is this community? Apparantly only 2% of UK Muslims speak no English. 90% are either fluent or consider it their first language. Are you suggesting the 2% all live together in a specific place? Where is that? I've never heard of it.

Where is your evidence for this? We had an MP who compared Muslim women wearing the burka as 'letter boxes' and still went on to be PM. Imagine if something like that was said about Jewish women who wear wigs?!

The latest Govt hate crimes stats show that a Jew is approx nine times more likely than a muslim to be the victim of a hate crime.

Quine0nline · 18/03/2026 15:32

So if the UK is so HIDEOUSLY racist, why are people travelling so far to come here for asylum? Yes, we have a welfare system but other countries have better and more generous systems. Our climate is not exactly the same as the countries they have left.
Coming to "sock it to whitey?" I doubt it. "Coming to the colonial motherland" no.

Well, they are coming to the UK in fewer numbers than other places, for the most part. But sometimes it's driven by the fact that they can speak English, so it makes sense to go to a country where they speak the language. Or sometimes there are relatives here who came over during Windrush. Or sometimes it's just the first place they felt safe, so that's where they stopped.

Don't stay but then don't also complain of ghettoisation when all the white people leave.

Paganpentacle · 18/03/2026 15:46

Even more important they they speak the language- unless you think its OK for your granny to not be able to understand what her caregivers are saying?

I'm not saying it's not desirable for those carers to speak English well but the point is those jobs are very, very hard to fill. There aren't loads of fluent English speakers queuing up to take them. We are totally reliant on low-skilled immigrants who often speak little English to staff care homes and hospitals. If we suddenly 'send them all back' as lots of people seem to be advocating, who is going to do those jobs?

So... extra day off for Eid then for the Muslim kids.
When do the Christian / non-Muslim kids get their extra day off?
( you can't count Christmas/ Easter - everyone gets those off).

nomas · 18/03/2026 15:58

You have played footloose and fancy free with the statistics there. That table shows double the amount of attacks against Muslims.

Even that reported number is low, research shows Muslims tend to be very unlikely to report racism and Islamophobic whereas the CST actively encourages Jewish people to report every incident.

I'm not sure it's the language, alleged rels or even Windrush I think it's because we are extremely tolerant and inclusive. Not to mention the accommodation and dental/ gp appointments. I'm not sure what France offer mind so can't comment if our packages are superior or not.

But not if the school is open for the non-muslim kids / teachers... like at my daughters school.
Muslims get the day off. Everyone else does not.
Are they going to divvy up inset days? Or all the muslim kids have to come in one day over easter? No, of course not...

Anyone in a job which involves SPEAKING to people needs people to be fluent in the language.
ESPECIALLY if it involves health care. Thats a non-negotiable.

So for you a wig is the same as a person who keeps their face completely covered? You really can’t see a difference?

wishingonastar101 · 18/03/2026 16:02

Sorry to bang on about the day off for muslims - I just think if you're at a non-religious school you don't get to take a day off for religious purposes. Like this causes more conflict than it needs to!

You still haven't answered my question. Where are you going to get all these fluent english speakers to fill the jobs currently being done by non-fluent immigrants? Do you think if the care homes were being inundated with applications from fluent speakers they wouldn't prioritise them when filling jobs? We have a problem with meeting the care sector needs already, that would be many times worse without the role played by the immigrant community

Hindu and Sikh kids can ask for a day off for Diwali etc. Jewish kids can ask for a day off for Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashannah, Hannukah.

Christians already have Easter and Christmas off but you could always ask for one of the below off and it will be granted as authorised absence for religious observance:

Epiphany – January 6
Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) – February 2
Ash Wednesday – Date varies (Feb/March)
Begins Lent, a period of fasting, repentance, and preparation for Easter.
Palm Sunday – Sunday before Easter
Maundy Thursday – During Holy Week
Ascension Day – 40 days after Easter
Pentecost – 50 days after Easter
Corpus Christi – Thursday after Trinity Sunday
All Saints’ Day – November 1
All Souls’ Day – November 2
