Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

Lol - would anyone tell (or expect) Spaniards to integrate with ex pat British communities?

Someone upthread said that Brits in Spain who did not integrate or learn the language were despicable. Since no one appears to have taken issue with this, I assume that is also true of the communities in the UK who do not learn English or integrate.

If you cannot or refuse to speak the language you very clearly take yourself out of the job market 🙄

So if the UK is so HIDEOUSLY racist, why are people travelling so far to come here for asylum? Yes, we have a welfare system but other countries have better and more generous systems. Our climate is not exactly the same as the countries they have left.

Yes, I agree OP. Sadly I think we are seeing a big step backwards when it comes to racism (and, without wishing to derail the thread, misogyny). It's very depressing. But it does seem to be a global trend and when I look around I'm not sure I can think of another country where it's any better. But, nonetheless, important to acknowledge it and how depressing it is.

Couple of points here. Firstly, Muslims are every bit as unlikely to "integrate" as white British people. In fact, they're even less likely to "permit" their daughters to marry someone outside of their own religion. Secondly @Firtreefiona gave no indication that she was "running away" from brown people. If you live in a deprived area with a major influx of immigrants, you are the least able to run anywhere. You're probably living in social housing for a start, so you can't just sell up and go. And when she said that the ruling classes don't live in those areas, she's right. You can't argue with that.

uk is ok in terms of racism, if you compare to eastern europe (i grew up there) where it is rife, as well as switzerland where i have the ‘pleasure’ of residing in atm. prob still better than the rest of europe. if you find it unsettling, dont try moving to other places in europe as it is MUCH worse.

They will be making up that school day on another day. A teaching day is not lost.

All these people talking about how immigrants "must learn the language" or they are totally unemployable... I wonder how you think our nursing homes and hospitals would function without immigrants doing the lowest paid jobs, cleaning, caring etc

We have significant numbers of people living in this country from different cultures who don't get along. It never gets mentioned and the inference is that its always 'white working class knuckle draggers' who are behind the rise in racism. I was friendly with a girl from Eastern Europe for a time and the racism that came out of her mouth was unreal. It was worse than anything I've ever heard a native Brit say. Fell out with her in the end. I think a lot of the rise in xenophobic behaviour is not coming from Brits. We've always had a small racist tendency but are consistently top of country polls for being the most welcoming.

Lots of countries plundered lots of countries. We were plundered by the Danes, Romans and French, we got over it. It's about time others let go of what Brits many years ago did. I have no axe to grind with the Italians for example. Ditto the Danes.

What annoys me is how many grown adults are either too stupid to know when they're being lied too or so racist that they'll happily go along with the lie as long as it suits their hateful narrative.

In what way do you feel that having neighbours that are not white British has made your area worse? This doesn't resonate with me at all. Our local mosque is an asset to the community, arranges all sorts from baby classes to wellbeing sessions, litter picks and a curry van with free meals for people who are struggling for food. The local businesses have elevated the area, planting flowers outside restaurants and shops, and I genuinely don't see any problems. What is happening in your area that you'd like people to see and listen to your concerns about?

lol. So you are suggesting that these people coming to Britain would rather the British Empire still existed and think that their countries were better under British rule??? Now they’re not under British rule they think the next best thing is to come to Britain? Well that’s a whole new take I’ve never seen before, not something I agree with and glad the Empire started to disintegrate well before most people alive now were born. Gives everyone a chance to move on. It’s not great one culture striding into another and imposing their culture on the host as often happens during empires

Bullshit. Have a look at the thread where a woman posted about her Pakistani neighbours bringing her food every week. So many stories of Muslims being generous to non-Muslims.

Just because Muslims don't want to do some things (drink alcohol, get pissed, go clubbing) doesn't mean they don't integrate in their own way.

Even more important they they speak the language- unless you think its OK for your granny to not be able to understand what her caregivers are saying?

Why would you stay in a ‘community’ where people make no attempt to learn English? Would you feel comfortable in that environment?
