Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

And this is part of the problem isnt it?
There should be no language barrier.
You should be able to speak the language of the country you've decided you want to live in.

My family came here and tried their best to fit in to their new country. They learnt the language, they worked and socialised with their neighbours. They took on the Scottish customs and way of life. They didn't live with others from their country and religion, they didn't demand everyone around them change to their ways, they respected their new country. My Husband's family did the same. You want to live here then you join in with British life and adopt British values, you don't move here and start demanding and you certainly don't move here and expect others to pay for you.

I'm talking about public places in strict Muslim countries. Would a Mass be allowed in Iran or Riyadh city centre? No. It would not.

So we should all be thankful that we are such an inclusive nation.

Well if that's what you meant, that's what you should have said, isn't it? You asked for a Muslim country where large numbers of Christians can congregate in public, and there you are.
And I'd be very thankful to live in an inclusive nation of it wasn't for the influx of Alf Garnetts, yapping on with their 1970s racist rhetoric spoiling it for those of us who enjoy living in a diverse society.

nomas · 18/03/2026 18:49

Gloriia · 18/03/2026 18:43

Christians have been slaughtered en masse by extremists, they havent just 'died'. They couldn't go and pray in the city centre. You listed Syria, not me.

IThey do pray in public, Gloria. Why have you ignored all examples in Lebanon as well?

Gloriia · 18/03/2026 18:54

'And I'd be very thankful to live in an inclusive nation of it wasn't for the influx of Alf Garnetts, yapping on with their 1970s racist rhetoric spoiling it for those of us who enjoy living in a diverse society.'

That sounds xenophobic tbh, a sweeping generalisation of what you think Brits are like? The majority are kind and tolerant. Like the majority of Muslims.

The extremists and racists are not representative of white and brown people. We should all have realised by now that we shouldn't label any nation by the extremists and if all islamists aren't jihadis then all Brits are not islamophobes.

Who is demanding people change their ways?

I think you are right but per capita Jews are the most likely to experience racism. We have definitely been ignoring that as a society, it’s extremely sad and an indictment of where the Uk is today.

I think the problem is that people have been watching things like the pro pal marches, people appearing to support hamas, grooming gangs, some poor soul seems to be raped every few days it its often an afghan or small boats asylum seeker. I can imagine for many muslims it’s extremely painful to be associated with any extremist or criminal elements but I’m not sure what you do about that. People read and watch the news. I think people know that it would be ridiculous to stigmatise every single muslim.

Also social media is a cesspit, ignore it and be out in the world instead.

That stat is about hate crime, not overall racism, they are not the same thing.

Course we can always do better. But starting a thread suggesting the UK is any worse than anywhere else will and should be challenged. We aren't, we are far better than many places. I'd rather live here than the intolerant ME for example.

I thought the thread was about whether the UK was getting worse. Not how does it compare with other countries.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 18/03/2026 19:02

The UK is not getting worse, people are just wearing their racism with pride.

Threads like these draw excited racists like honey to a bee.

Well it's obviously relevant to compare our inclusion and tolerance to other countries Confused and nope, we aren't 'getting worse' and while extremists do not represent all Muslims nor do racists represent all Brits.

Bringemout · 18/03/2026 19:06

MannoseHelp · 18/03/2026 18:11

No. A person with a Muslim husband posts that she is worried about racism. You immediately say Jewish people have it worse. Just why?? There is no need to reply like that and I would say the same if it was the other way around. About any topic actually. Shameless whataboutery with a dubious agenda.

She didn’t say islamaphobia, she said racism, does racism only affect muslim people?

@Firstbornunicorn "But sometimes it's driven by the fact that they can speak English, so it makes sense to go to a country where they speak the language. Or sometimes there are relatives here who came over during Windrush."

I can tell you don't live in an area with large amounts of asylum seekers. Firstly, a very high proportion of them don't speak English at all and don't come from ex British countries. Secondly, are you seriously saying that any of them have connections to the Windrush generation? That's absolutely bonkers. A tiny (virtually non existent percentage) are from the Caribbean. The majority come from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Iran.

I said "sometimes". Try to read comments before responding.

Yes well I mean hate crime is a bit more of a solid quantitative measure of harm than the much broader, vaguer measure of discrimination isn’t it?

Bringemout · 18/03/2026 19:10

Anyway back to the OP, most people in daily life are not going to be randomly racist to you. What you see on social media is just the most extreme people amplified.

The OP didn’t say anything about other countries so you saying ‘But starting a thread suggesting the UK is any worse than anywhere else will and should be challenged. We aren't, we are far better than many places. I'd rather live here than the intolerant ME for example.’ is completely bizarre and not obvious at all. She didn’t start the thread that is in your imagination.

You also were emphatic that Christians in the ME never meet in public places and yet when given examples of Lebanon and Egypt, you ignore them.

She was talking about the racism experienced about her Muslim partner and that he was down about it, and you pipe up with Jews have it worse than Muslims. It’s not a race to the bottom.

I don’t see why you are so upset about it being pointed out that his risk of experiencing a hate crime is lower than a Jews risk?

I would say the Jewish people have suffered the greatest ongoing persecution for their ethnicity over the last 2,500 years. How do you feel about antisemitism? Why don’t you want to discuss that?

Why don't you start your own thread? This thread is about racism in the UK, not lets build a hierarchy of oppression and gaslight all the other ethnic groups.

There is a double standard at play here.

If someone brings up Islamophobia in the first few posts on an OP talking about about anti-Semitism, they would instantly be accused of derailing.

What did she say?

Not by me, there isn't.

So what? If some people are Islamophobic, that means anyone being Antisemitic gets a bye?

You want an Antisemitic comment, that has rightly been deleted, repeated for your own satisfaction? Why? Do you have a sliding scale of what is and isn't acceptable when it comes to Antisemitism?

No. Try harder. My post is there for all to see and there's not a shred of anti British xenophobia in it. I'm referring to a particular cohort that are all over these threads with the type of racist hyperbole I thought we'd seen the back of somewhere in the 80s.
I'd like to think they were a minority, but as a white British person I'm not best placed to comment on the level of racism faced by people who aren't me, so I'll stay in my lane on that one and take people's word for it.
I'm commenting on what I see and what I experience. A cohort of racists perpetuating stereotypes about people who follow the religions of my friends and neighbours, and trying to divide the communities many of us value.

You said Syria and Egypt, 2 places where Christians are persecuted and slaughtered so no, strict Muslim countries do not allow public displays of Christianity like we allow other religious worship.

Can you really not agree that we are a very inclusive country?! Are you a Brit, if yes aren't you proud of our diversity and tolerance?

Alf garnett, 1970s racism? Sweeping generalisation then?
