Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

Im not talking about not wearing a swimsuit. Im talking about an actual burka. Dont be so ignorant.

Absolutely no way have you seen women in Burkas swimming. Please do not troll a serious thread with this garbage,

She specifically said she doesn't want Muslim women to be allowed to wear head scarves.

I personally have no issue with any woman wearing a head scarf.
I have major issues with full face coverings, whether that's a balaclava, bike Visor or niqab.

For those already here, it should be a requirement to attend English language lessons and speak English to a required standard. We need to learn from past errors like this. With youth unemployment as it stands immigrants now should be limited to highly skilled people only )who are much more likely to speak English)

Perhaps someone should have had a word with Andrea Jenkyns then.

Paganpentacle · 18/03/2026 15:19

So... how do they communicate with the wider society?
Healthcare for example.
Oh yes... a triple appointment and a translator.

I'm not arguing that they shouldn't learn the language. I'm just answering your point about working.
Of course they should learn the language, but we have to accept that it can take a few years.

And yet there are many British 'expats' living in Spain eating their English breakfasts who don't speak a word of Spanish.

I thought to live there permanently you had to have an income of around £30k per year and private medical insurance?

So you cant just rock up and try and find a job or be looked after by the state.

Firtreefiona · 18/03/2026 17:33

It may be a choice for some women, but not all. I personally knew many young women who were in my daughters year at school and were friends of hers, they were told they had to wear a scarf, they had no choice, these girls were 12/13 years old at the time.

My experience was also of friends being made to wear a hijab by parents for reasons of modesty. Grim. What’s immodest about hair?

I don't know the details, but it's obviously quite difficult now since Brexit.

@Gwenhwyfar My dsis is a nun.
She never wears her veil when travelling on public transport because too many pervy men make creepy remarks to her.

Tell that to the Muslim woman who was subject to a racist murder attempt when a man tried to run into her car a couple of days ago simply for being a Muslim.

I think she would tell you where to go.

Edited

Someone being attacked for being Muslim still doesn’t make Muslim a race.

Bringemout · 18/03/2026 17:36

MannoseHelp · 18/03/2026 17:16

It’s not a competition. Ugh. Poor taste.

Ugh, Yes it’s not, so why not have sympathy for the people who face the most racism in the UK?

I’ve suffered racism and I think it’s important to acknowledge the racism that our country is studiously ignoring. I’m not Jewish and right now I feel extremely sorry for the Jewish community.

I was trying to find information on attacks against holy places, the BMT noted 25 attacks on mosques in 2024, 164 on synagogues according to the CST. There are of course far fewer synagogues than there are mosques in the UK.

That doesn’t make attacks on mosques or muslims any less bad, it’s just that the evidence consistently suggests that Jews face way more harassment and harm than other groups. But so many don’t think it’s a problem. I think attacking any place of worship is a problem and if one particular community seems to be disproportionately affected by racism why not talk about it. The OP was about racism.

There is loads of inclusivity and diversity in this country.

Go try holding a Mass in a public high profile place in a predominantly Muslim country. Then you'll see hate and division, probably extreme voice. Not just a bit of moaning on X.

I used to live and work in a ME country, all displays of Christianity were forbidden. Understandably so really but we didn't moan that weren't included or anything.

Some majority Muslim countries do have quite a few Christians and they are allowed to worship.
In any case, religious intolerance is horrible.

HRTQueen · 18/03/2026 17:39

Unfortunaly the issue around racism has got worse over the past ten years. We have prominent racist party leaders and world leaders.

Racism even on MN is not dealt with appropriately and many racist post will be allowed to stand.

People will often point out it was worse in the 60/70/80's or that is it worse in xyz country. So what no racism is acceptable or should ever be considered acceptable or excused as a society we should have much higher standards.

Christians allowed to pray in large groups in public in a high profile areas in Muslim countries? Where?

Religious intolerance is of course horrible but we do better than most if not all.

Yet the people who see a woman in a hijab and call her a P and attack her will be arrested for a racist attack.

Lock the racists away and throw away the key.

Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Senegal, to name a few.

Charlize43 · 18/03/2026 17:49

It will be much worse after April when taxes go up - thanks to idiotic Rachel Reeves. I've noticed in the workplace people making comments that they wouldn't have made several years ago. The Cost of Living Crisis has everyone up against the wall. It doesn't help the government and most overpaid politicians aren't reading the room at all. Racial tension is going to get worse.

Does that include those who attacked Mr Singh, the restaurateur who doesnt use halal?
Ill wait

Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Senegal, to name a few.

Christians in those countries often face violence and persecution as minorities. The Lebanese Christians are the safest being 10% of the population.

Probably the safest place to be a religious minority in the muslim world is Dubai. i know egyptian copts, some Christian lebanese, druze from syria. It is never comfortable being a minority but really the religious intolerance is pretty extreme as in someone may genuinely try to kill you extreme.

Again, Muslim women don't wear burkas in swimming pools, they are not allowed to be worn in pools.

Full length swimsuits for women are not burqas.

They were wearing full burkas. TBF it was very hot.

Why are Muslim women not allowed to wear burkas in pools in Muslim countries? Is it against their religion?

If you are not capable of learning a new language in a year while living in a country full time how are you capable of working?

No adult is capable of becoming fluent in a language in a year. I speak two languages fluently, well, my English is close enough. I work in a third language that I have only been learning so I’m not fluent, I have taken and passed professional qualifications in my third language.

Learning another language as an adult is a life long task, it isn’t something that happens quickly.

What languages do you speak?

The vast majority of restaurants in the UK are not halal. None of them are attacked for not serving halal.

Muslim people are more likely to go to a Pakistani curry restaurant because they know it will be halal.

Very few Pakistanis would expect halal food at a Sikh restaurant.

Mr Singh has admitted his restaurant was losing money before all this debacle.

His car windows should not have been vandalised due to his support for the EDL and Reform.

It has nothing to do with him not serving halal.

Hoardasurass · 18/03/2026 17:58

Gwenhwyfar · 18/03/2026 14:33

"I think people should be checked for fluency within a year and if they’re not their visas should be withdrawn."

A year? Can you learn a language to fluency in a year?

As for banning the nikab, there are clear human rights issues with such a ban and they don't work anyway. I live in a place where they are banned and I still see them from some time. It's also likely that some of the women who wear them just retreat from the public space.

If you only hear and are spoken to in a foreign language for 12 weeks the average person will gain a basic understanding of it. With lessons they can be fluent in less than 6 months.
As for banning the nikab it along with all face coverings should be illegal in public.

I was fluent in Norwegian after living there three months. I went on to live there many more years. But then again I made a big effort to learn.
