Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

Well according to Kemi, the UK does not have a racism problem, so you must be too sensitive.Hmm

BigYellowBus · 18/03/2026 10:33

It's awful. Sadiq Khan could find a cure of cancer and the comments on any news story would still be all about how it's now Londonistan and how he's trying to outlaw Christianity. I don't think you're being too sensitive at all. I don't know what the solution is though

Its growing worse by the day somethings on social media shouldn't be allowed it makes me feel sad for my dp.

How does your DP feel about it?

Mixedmix · 18/03/2026 10:42

I started school in the 2000s and racism was 10 times worse back then. It’s not as bad now but I still experience and witness racism from time to time.

Skybunnee · 18/03/2026 10:55

In my view until the Gov gets control on immigration it will continue.
There are no stats for who is in the country who is coming to the country , who is leaving the country.
I think we have lots of well qualified Muslims here who are welcome but there are undesirables (not necessarily Muslims) who seem to pop up on a lot of police crime tv etc and give an impression of immigrants causing problems.
It’s sad - I blame the last 25 years of Gov

I think you are right but per capita Jews are the most likely to experience racism. We have definitely been ignoring that as a society, it’s extremely sad and an indictment of where the Uk is today.

I think the problem is that people have been watching things like the pro pal marches, people appearing to support hamas, grooming gangs, some poor soul seems to be raped every few days it its often an afghan or small boats asylum seeker. I can imagine for many muslims it’s extremely painful to be associated with any extremist or criminal elements but I’m not sure what you do about that. People read and watch the news. I think people know that it would be ridiculous to stigmatise every single muslim.

Also social media is a cesspit, ignore it and be out in the world instead.

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 11:43

There has always been racism in the UK and the likes of Reform have enabled people to be more vocal. Even if our borders get controlled some ignorant people will always continue to be racist.

Where is your evidence for this? We had an MP who compared Muslim women wearing the burka as 'letter boxes' and still went on to be PM. Imagine if something like that was said about Jewish women who wear wigs?!

Did you ever read that article, he was pointing out that in a free society he’s free to think burqas make women look like postboxes and they are free to wear whatever they like. It was a point about freedom of speech and freedom of expression?

It really wasn't. It's appalling these days and the likes of Trump, Farage "normalising" racism is what has led to people being overtly racist online and in person.

If you experience it and witness it I hope you also call it out.

I’m sorry you experienced it then, as well as now.
I was also at school in 2000s, and racism was definitely about then, too. I was lucky, as I was at an international school, so there was a lot of different types of people and religions about.
Racism is definitely poignant now, too, but it absolutely did exist very strongly in the 80s/90s/00s.

Well in that case people can be as racist as they like to Muslims and Jews and whoever else they wish to.

My point is that racism against Muslims has become the norm to such an extent that an MP feels able to say such things and there are no consequences to this. He was a despicable person who managed to spin his racism as 'free speech'!

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 12:26

These stats are based on people actually reporting them in the first place and so therefore not completely reliable.

People of Muslim faith are also more likely to experience social disadvantage in education and employment therefore may also be less likely to report racism due to language barriers and not knowing who/how to report.

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 12:28

@Charltonstrek I'm sorry that you and your partner are experiencing racism. All you can do it hold your head high, be proud of who you are and your faith, call it out and report it when it happens.

The OP was specifically relaying her feelings about racism her DH is facing for being Muslim and it's telling that you just had to compare that to racism to Jews. It's not a compare and contrast exercise.

Agreed. Context was lost unfortunately.

The problem is by trying to create a concept as "Islamophobia" the lines have been blurred. What is the OP supposed to call out? Racism (bad), criticism of Islam (acceptable in a society that is not supposed to have blasphemy laws).

If you have language barriers in this country and are unable to speak English, I suppose it's predictable you would experience disadvantage in education and employment.

I'm not sure how people with lower education and employment, and poor English, have managed to get residency in the UK to be honest.

Its not racist to criticise Islam though.
