America will never regain the credibility they have lost

AIBU to believe that come what may America has lost all credibility in the world and even if they eventually unseat the current regime nobody will trust them ever again, or at the very least for a very, very long time indeed.

I have even less desire to go to the US now. The orange man is increasingly insande.
Having said that I’m worried about the state of the UK these days: the reform voters are just as bad. I’m a bit scared!!!!

In some ways I'd say Reform voters are worse because they see the blueprint unfolding in the US in real time and think 'yep, want some of that'. I truly despair.

NotMeAtAll · 19/03/2026 06:48

The fact that they voted for Trump twice will mean it takes a long time to be trusted again. They'd probably vote for him for another term if they could.

I doubt it. His popularity ratings are now negative.

US is a dying superpower it simply can't recover to where it was before, it's debt is unsustainable and many economists are saying mathematically impossible to pay back, it can't afford to stay the military superpower and it has lost out on so much trade it will take years to get back. EU is no longer buying g their military equipment and their failure with Iran is showing that the biggest military no longer wins wars as such as the world has changed . The world is also moving away from the petrodollar and this will have a huge economic effect too, although will take time.

Wellthisisdifficult · 19/03/2026 07:01

Oh course it will bounce back. The countries norms and values are fundamentally the same as much of the western world, they just have an idiot in charge for a few years which is annoying atm. Once he’s gone in a few years hopefully they will elect someone who can play nicer and things will just settle back to how they were before. This is the advantage of limiting time in power so even if you elect some maniac who murders 100s of thousands of his own citizens like some regimes, you aren’t stuck with them.

teletubbyy · 19/03/2026 07:08

America now is seen as a joke because of that man. He thinks he rules the world, throws a hissyfit when the rest of the world don’t agree with him. Slags off our soldiers and nato, not to mention the Epstein files ! He’s an absolute narcissist and it’s scary he’s running America.

I remember a Billy Connolly joke about Ronald Reagan being old and having his finger on the button.
“ My dad’s the same age as Reagan and we don’t even let him have the remote control for the telly !”

At least Reagan had actual political experience - two terms as Governor of California.

Senator Mark Kelly seems like a decent candidate to me.

No, this is different or has the very real potential to be.

Blowing up Middle Eastern gas and oil fields isn't something that can be unwound easily, if at all, there are no alternative suppliers.

So that means a wrecked world economy, maybe for decades.

..and its ALL down to Trump and his supporters, including Badenoch and Farage, who even now wont criticise Trump.

MushMonster · 19/03/2026 07:19

I agree that it will take a long time for people to feel the same about US. Even if Trump was taken out now and elections would be called, the world will watch from the side for a good while.
As Trump still has years of this term left and a long list of really stupid things he wants to do. That will sink public opinion on US even lower. Maybe forever.

Did you just sneak in that you agree with the insane crazies that the election was stolen . . . . .

Did you think I meant they didn't really win? I just meant that it was a hollow victory.

Meh, the Nazis blew up half of Europe, no one has an issue with Germany in Europe now.

lots of untapped fossil fuels in other parts of the world lots of green alternatives. Might make people reconsider how to live a bit which is good. There’s a great interview with John Michael Greer from years ago predicting this kind of thing where he talks about people having to change to be lower consumers of energy coupled with greener initiatives. Fossil fuels were always going to run out - this just potentially accelerates matters

Have you got an actual point to make because your posts make no sense and you're derailing an interesting thread.

Only reason Europe became so prosperous again so quickly after WWII was the Marshall Plan. Completely different situation and context. There's no one available to do the same now.

Trump's not even the real problem. The problem is disaster capitalism and unchecked billionaire power.

Gardenquestion22 · 19/03/2026 07:53

The whole world is different not just America, it’s ballsed up for a decade, but Xi and Putin have got their ducks in a row. It’s like we are playing a different game to them. It needs some proper grown up western leaders not macho posturing guys playing at being grown up.

Reagan was indeed in a different league politically and intellectually. However I do blame him for many of the problems that have plagued the Republican party for the last decades, in particular getting into bed with Christian nationalists which in turn boosted their influence in Washington. Project 2025-26 is the result of that.

I didn't even mention Germany, though the SUN would come up with some stupid WW2 Headline when England face Germany again.

As to the rest of your post..... the world isn't ready for alternatives and in any case, these take years to bring on stream.

Yes i agree we need to change how we live, but this is NOT the way to do it, it'll be devasting for the less well off and potentially for us all.

The economic fallout from this is going to make the GFC seem like a tea party.

Anyone down playing the consequences is being rather naive.

If the former head of Intelligence in the USA is to be believed, its unchecked Israeli influence on Trump, who believes his own BS.

Billionaires don't benefit from a collapsed world economy, they get wealthier when they can sell the RoW their stuff.

This is pretty strong going. That first line.

I think it might refer to the strong line they are taking against 'illegal immigrants' when the whole country is based on illegal immigration and slavery.

Well you said it yourself - completely different situation, so we don’t need someone to do the same now. The answer to this will be something different.

LakieLady · 19/03/2026 08:20

My concern is that Trump can't, really can't, serve a 3rd term, based on the constitution, which is based on the (very) old Roman Republic (yes, that one)

I don't think it will stop him trying given the shenanigans when he wasn't reelected and here will be those who are motivated enough, or daft enough, to fall for it. However, the current state of affairs he has created may put off some of his natural supporters.

I wouldn't put it past the mad fucker to find an excuse to cancel the next election on some sort of spurious "national emergency" grounds.

But then I don't think 'meh it happened before' is a good argument either. There is no precedent for what's going on right now.
