America will never regain the credibility they have lost

AIBU to believe that come what may America has lost all credibility in the world and even if they eventually unseat the current regime nobody will trust them ever again, or at the very least for a very, very long time indeed.

I remember a Billy Connolly joke about Ronald Reagan being old and having his finger on the button.
“ My dad’s the same age as Reagan and we don’t even let him have the remote control for the telly !”

HectorPlasm · 18/03/2026 12:09

You are an idiot if you ever trusted the US in the first place - they have always preached democracy but waged terror. Ask Cuba, Iraq, Vietnam and any number of South and Central American countries where they have subverted existing structures and installed regimes. The world's policeman is bent but the scary part is they genuinely think they are respected and revered for what they do. I wouldn't trust them as far as I can kick them - the only people they care about are themselves.

Too right. World's policeman my foot.

SoSadSoSadSoSad · 18/03/2026 12:12

I think people are pissed off with late stage capitalism too. Americans are looking at rest of the world. And no longer screaming but SOCIALISM when it comes to universal health care funded by the taxpayers.

NotDavidTennant · 18/03/2026 12:25

The US bounced back after Vietnam and Iraq. The current conflict in Iran is quite minor by comparison.

MyOliveStork · 18/03/2026 12:28

Donald Trump is 80 this year!
so hopefully he won’t be around too much longer, though the fact he is the same age as my parents, scares the hell out of me.
How can an 80 year old understand the way people are living in his country let alone the world.
President of the USA and probably completely out of touch

Greenwitchart · 18/03/2026 12:34

I doubt it.

Trump is a poison but once he is gone and the country starts electing credible and competent presidents again the US will bounce back.

You need to remember as well that many Americans did not vote for him and do not support the Maga madness.

Anonanonanonagain · 18/03/2026 12:34

If the orange tddler is impeached maybe they can bring some credibiity back but otherwise nope.

HopSpringsEternal · 18/03/2026 12:36

TheNoonBell · 18/03/2026 08:25

They have that already and it has been very successful. Nearly all presidential candiates have been mental for at least the last 30 years.

What rubbish. Particularly Obama.

TutTutTutSigh · 18/03/2026 12:38

They need to stop electing pensioners for a start. Leader of the free world is not a typical post- retirement hobby job.

Anonanonanonagain · 18/03/2026 12:45

Obama was the best thing to happen to that country in decades.

EverythingGolden · 18/03/2026 12:52

He just seems monumentally unsuited to this role. He quite obviously has no idea what he is doing and even more dangerous is that he doesn’t appear to listen to people who do.

The empire may well be in its death throes with Trump just a symptom of this and his ridiculous blithering is the death rattle. But I’m worried that this makes it a dangerous moment for us all. But people have short memories so providing he doesn’t nuke us all will probably limp on for a while.

Crushed23 · 18/03/2026 13:06

Sorry, when was this period of ‘credibility’?

I live here now and what’s difficult to convey to those who don’t live here is how spectacularly little Americans care about the opinions of foreigners. So while I agree with you to a degree, it’s a complete non-issue.

DdraigGoch · 18/03/2026 13:16

Duffyuip · 18/03/2026 09:38

Seems a rather blanket statement. Never?

Look at Germany and Japan. Enemies in WW2 and now respected members of the international community.

I think most sensible people are able to separate the nation from the current President / regime. It’s clear Trump is increasingly isolated, even amongst the right wingers who previously were his cheerleaders.

Edited

Germany and Japan are certainly accepted as peaceful, democratic countries now. They didn't get there just by electing a new leader and carrying on with their lives. They had entire new constitutions designed to prevent a repeat, effectively forced upon them by the Allies at gunpoint.

So, come 2028, a sane President is elected. Is that going to make us trust the US? No, because the fact that Trump got a second term proved to us that without some radical changes the US is never more than four years from electing another maniac. They need to massively rein in executive power - possibly to the extent of making the President a ceremonial figurehead with reserve powers, like in Ireland or Germany. The oligarchy needs rooting out of the government, proper checks and balances restricting the ability of wealthy individuals to buy elections.

I think that the US was vaguely credible under FDR. That was about the last time that an administration did anything for ordinary people, anyway.

I suppose they haven’t had to. But it won’t be a non issue if parts of their economy go down the toilet because of loss of power and influence. The world is interconnected now and US can’t survive on its own however much they think they can. It seems like Trump only thinks in the short term and what will make money for himself and his family. He doesn’t think about the future for Americans or anyone else.

cambiodenombre123 · 18/03/2026 13:28

Yep, and Israel.

RudolphTheReindeer · 18/03/2026 13:31

I don't think that's necessarily the case. We all know Trump is a loon and can see even his own people don't agree with him.

cambiodenombre123 · 18/03/2026 13:32

But the Epstein files... and the way it has all been hidden. There were rumours for years about elite paedophile circles and turns out to be true.

mummymeister · 18/03/2026 13:38

I had no idea that there were no real checks and balances in place in the american system that would stop someone becoming a dictator. He is a dictator. he told oil companies about venezuela before telling his own government. he has taken america into war because russia and israel told him to. I wont visit america until he has gone and I try not to do any business with american companies through my own business. he clearly has mental capacity issues, the way his speeches just ramble on. I find the whole situation scary and more so because america seems to have no mechanism to sanction him or remove him from office. we have years left of this man. what more is he going to do?

Waitfortheguinness · 18/03/2026 13:49

Don’t think the US has any credibility left. They lost it all when the orange toddler got in for a second term.

emmetgirl · 18/03/2026 14:14

For me it’s the fact that so many millions of people voted for him in the first place.

sparklyblueberry2 · 18/03/2026 14:35

I can’t help but think all the millions of people in America and Trump is the best candidate for presidency….to me that’s absolutely wild!

Overtheatlantic · 18/03/2026 14:37

That’s just not true. There was an excellent candidate on the other side of the aisle.

SerendipityJane · 18/03/2026 14:38

A nation founded on the sole aim or evading taxes as racists. No wonder Nigel Farage feels so attracted to it.

America will never regain the credibility they have lost
