Is it normal to burp loudly in a yoga class??

Just done a yoga class with about 8 women and one man. As I was rolling up out of my spinal roll I hear this giant, very loud, very intentional burp coming from across the room! I smiled expecting everyone to laugh or look a bit shocked, and the person to say ‘oops I’m so sorry’ or ‘excuse me’ or something, but everyone just carried on as though it was totally normal..did not even acknowledge it! I’m pretty sure it was the man, which for some reason, annoyed me a bit. Just made me think, god another entitled, arrogant man. I don’t think I’d have felt that way if it had been a woman. He also breathed SO loudly. I get in yoga some people like to deep breathe but it really does not need to be so loud. I’ve done quite a lot of various different yoga classes over the years and I’ve never heard anyone burp like this. Is this normal??

How old is older? I’m 54 and I’ve never burped or farted in class.

Give it ten years... 😕

BlueEyedBogWitch · 13/03/2026 16:16

There used to be an older woman who was hard of hearing in the back row of my Pilates class. She’d fart away merrily, every week. I can only assume she couldn’t hear how loud she was.

A big intentional belch is disgusting, though. Is he Barney Gumble?

I know someone who went to yoga and there was a loud fart. An American lady piped up and said “I’m so sorry that was my vagina” 😂

😂

What are the limits though? What if what someone needs to do is have a nice big poo?

The limit is what's lawful. It's against the law to expose yourself and relief yourself in public. Having lunch or fating is not against the law.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 13/03/2026 16:34

I went to a group where a man did performative farts and stank out the room. I found another group!

I'd have little interest in going to a yoga class where people proceeded to eat, anyway.

Shedmistress · 13/03/2026 16:38

Eating lunch during yoga and it was all fine?
That is such a yoga teacher thing to say.

That's ok. I don't have any interest in attending beer yoga or puppy/goat yoga. Plenty of classes to choose from.

I really don’t understand why anyone would be shocked or disgusted by a normal bodily function. Everyone farts and burps from time to time, some more than others.

Fair enough a fart might slip out accidentally but to do a loud burp you have to actually open your mouth to let it out. You can easily let it out quietly. And it was disgusting. I wouldn’t be disgusted if someone accidentally did a really loud fart. I’d find it hilarious. This was gross because it was at least semi-intentional and was a really disgusting burp! And it came from a man who was already grunting and heavy breathing unnecessarily. People can say “yoga’s all about your individual space blah blah” all they want. But fact is you’re not actually in your individual space, you’re 3 inches away from someone who doesn’t want the stench of your burpy breakfast in their face! If you want to freely burp and fart do yoga at home on YouTube with Adrienne!

Ha, ha, my DH decided to take up yoga, so I told him to make sure he didn't nick anyone's spot and definitely no performative breathing...he's been allowed in the social Whatsapp group, so I think it was noted.

So anything goes in your yoga class as long as it’s not against the law?! So someone could do shrieking high-pitched cat noises throughout? Someone could bring a camping stove and start cooking up some sausages? Someone could play heavy metal on their phone at max volume with no headphones because it helps them “get into the zone”?

If it had been me to burp so loudly in class, I would have said a quick 'excuse me'.

Mulledjuice · 13/03/2026 18:33

It doesnt sound like the class for you.

IME burps and farts and queefs aren't abnormal but also it's not normal to acknowledge or apologise for them - it would be inapropriate to laugh or comment - you're supposed to be concentrating on your own practice.

Complaining about logic breathing being loud is....missing the point, I think?

A guy once started snoring in mine.

Like I said, maybe not a good fit for your.

Yes! Why are they always huffing and puffing so much!?? It’s so annoying.

There was a man deep breathing in and out with force all through the yoga class I attended today. Why??? it's just so unnecessary and distracting...... The other 16 attendees (all women.... ) somehow managed to complete the class without any performance breathing.....

Well, one can't play music in a class without a license and cooking indoors is against health and safety regulations. As to shrieking and cat noises...I taught yoga to children with PMLD for years and it wouldn't be that unusual to hear a lot of noise during those classes.
You haven't experienced any of those things though, have you? You had someone burp in a class. That's not even remotely on the same level.

redboxer321 · 13/03/2026 18:46

This is why I can't do yoga. I'm either trying to suppress a fart, failing to suppress a fart and getting embarrassed or giggling at other people who have failed to suppress a fart. It's not for me.

angelikacpickles · 13/03/2026 19:00

Surely the loud breathing is just ujjayi breathing?

KitsyWitsy · 13/03/2026 19:11

Catza · 13/03/2026 11:56

A bit of a perspective from a yoga teacher. Yoga is about being present in your own body, with your own practice. Maybe something to reflect on if your mind drifts to thinking about others in a class. Especially if it raises u comfortable emotions. Bring your attention back to your mat. Otherwise, you are not really doing yoga. You are exercising. Not the same thing.
I always start my class with an invitation to do whatever each person needs to do to feel comfortable in the class and that this is a space with no judgement. Someone was eating lunch during relaxation the other day. Perfectly happy about that is that's what they felt was needed and no need to apologise.

Christ.

who the fuck eats at a yoga class? And what kind of spineless teacher allows it?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/03/2026 19:34

Not for burping, but I find a small bore hose (certainly not a garden hose!) discreetly inserted in my rear and fed down my leggings and then out through an adjacent window of the hall deals with;

  1. the sound,
  2. potential unpleasant odours.

So far, no one seems to have noticed, except maybe when I am coiling up the said pipe at the end of a session.

agree I would not be impressed if someone whipped out a sandwich during shavassana

Screaming isn’t illegal. Nor is singing Defying Gravity… Why should one person disrupt savasana for the entire room because they can’t wait ten minutes for lunch? If it’s a medical reason they could just leave the studio themselves rather than wreck relaxation for everyone else. It’s supposed to be a considerate environment as it’s shared space not a my needs trump all and f the rest of you. (Which is why the males are generally so annoying. Was your eater a male btw?)

angelikacpickles · 13/03/2026 19:00

It doesn't need to be audible to others in the room, maybe slightly by those immediately next to you but that's it

I had a man beside me who sounded like he was trying to blast off into outer space doing a 10 second plank. There’s a difference between ujayi and performative tosspot who needs everyone to know there’s an important male in the room.

females don’t burn or fart then…

if it was a woman who you suspected that would be ok?

I'd find your classes really annoying! We aren't all so perfect we can just tune out someone munching away on their sandwiches while we try to relax.

I guess some people do enjoy your style - but I must say I'd be voting with my feet!
