Is it normal to burp loudly in a yoga class??

Just done a yoga class with about 8 women and one man. As I was rolling up out of my spinal roll I hear this giant, very loud, very intentional burp coming from across the room! I smiled expecting everyone to laugh or look a bit shocked, and the person to say ‘oops I’m so sorry’ or ‘excuse me’ or something, but everyone just carried on as though it was totally normal..did not even acknowledge it! I’m pretty sure it was the man, which for some reason, annoyed me a bit. Just made me think, god another entitled, arrogant man. I don’t think I’d have felt that way if it had been a woman. He also breathed SO loudly. I get in yoga some people like to deep breathe but it really does not need to be so loud. I’ve done quite a lot of various different yoga classes over the years and I’ve never heard anyone burp like this. Is this normal??

I did yoga for over a decade, I never heard anyone fart or burp. Now wondering if I was doing it wrong 😬

No. It's always the men too, huffing puffing breathing loudly groaning. I really prefer it when they're not in the class at all.

I've been doing yoga all my adult life and have heard a small fart in a handful of yoga classes. That's about it.

Yes! Why are they always huffing and puffing so much!?? It’s so annoying.

mental note to never try yoga

*bobble hat 🙄

Thank you for the clarification. I was racking my brain trying to imagine wtf a bottle hat was!

Growlybear83 · 13/03/2026 13:15

I really don’t understand why anyone would be shocked or disgusted by a normal bodily function. Everyone farts and burps from time to time, some more than others.

CopeNorth · 13/03/2026 13:18

I know someone who went to yoga and there was a loud fart. An American lady piped up and said “I’m so sorry that was my vagina” 😂

RaraRachael · 13/03/2026 13:22

I was considering joining a yoga class but if burping and farting out loud are commonplace, I'll give it a miss 🙄

A bit of a perspective from a yoga teacher. Yoga is about being present in your own body, with your own practice. Maybe something to reflect on if your mind drifts to thinking about others in a class. Especially if it raises u comfortable emotions. Bring your attention back to your mat. Otherwise, you are not really doing yoga. You are exercising. Not the same thing.
I always start my class with an invitation to do whatever each person needs to do to feel comfortable in the class and that this is a space with no judgement. Someone was eating lunch during relaxation the other day. Perfectly happy about that is that's what they felt was needed and no need to apologise.

I bet that was nice for everyone else during relaxation

Perhaps it was one of these, in which case standing on his head would have been even more of an achievement.

It's only happened once in the many yoga sessions I've been to

Moveyourbleedingarse · 13/03/2026 13:48

This is the reason why exercising in public is a bad thing.
Home YouTube yoga always for me.

We have a farty lady in our yoga class. I can tell from the sigh/groan after that she's mortified so we all keep calm and carry on.

DisappearingGirl · 13/03/2026 13:52

I think it's probably quite common to accidentally fart or burp during yoga.

However I do think there can be a phenomenon of the Only Man in the Yoga Class being a bit self-important and performative ...

beadystar · 13/03/2026 13:58

It’s normal, I’ve accidentally farted once and was mortified. Our teacher farted in wind relieving pose and obviously we ignored it. However, what I’ve noticed about males in yoga is a lot of performative grunting and puffing. They also mostly assume dominance over shared space. If you watch a row of women doing eg sun salutations, they consider each other’s space, the average man flings his arms and legs where he wants and it’s up to his neighbour to move. This man probably did burp on purpose. A weird showing of dominance in an environment that is usually a majority of women? Some of the men come to class stinky too. I pick the groups that aren’t male-heavy as I find them too annoying.

What are the limits though? What if what someone needs to do is have a nice big poo?

Goldfsh · 13/03/2026 14:37

I try not to let this sort of thing bother me. A lot of older men (and women) suffer with digestive issues and burping becomes rather uncontrollable.

🤣🤣I did wonder wtf a bottle hat was!

😂My fingers are obviously more used to typing bottle than bobble

wishingonastar101 · 13/03/2026 15:16

I have farted in yoga... but I think I said "oops pardon".

I once did a session in which a woman wept for the whole 90min and no one said a word. That was quite weird.

blubberball · 13/03/2026 15:25

Never heard any one burp or fart in our yoga class. Thankfully, there are no men in our class

Yesitsmeimback · 13/03/2026 15:27

I did a shiatsu weekend and at the end we were all sitting about chatting to the teacher. I let out the most enormous and long fart I say let out I had absolutely no control over it I was mortified the teacher just looked and said 'we have obviously moved some energy' 😂

ChocolateCinderToffee · 13/03/2026 15:58

To be honest, whatever the circumstances, if someone burps or farts, it's good manners to ignore it.

12345onceIcaughta · 13/03/2026 16:09

There’s a man that attends a local Pilates class, he sighs and does exaggerated breathing.
Ive stopped going, he really wound me up and it was not a relaxing environment. Everyone else managed to breathe normally.

ThePoshUns · 13/03/2026 16:11

I have been doing yoga for 5 years and have only heard someone fart once, never burp. If it was a one off fine but if it was a regular thing I wouldn’t be impressed

How old is older? I’m 54 and I’ve never burped or farted in class.
