Anger at forth coming COL crisis

MyCheekyEagle · 09/03/2026 20:27

Of course I understand that the ME war is going to have an impact on oil prices & that will get passed onto the already struggling families; but when things stabilise again & maybe oil prices reset the greedy corporatez never pass this saving back to customers fo they. They just think as we've got used to these new higher prices we'll just keep them there. This thought has given me the rage most of today!
Just needed to vent somewhere, thanks if you listened..

The true cost of living is higher than the inflation rate.
The inflation rate is based on things I believe that are deliberately included so that it appears that the rate isn’t as high as the true cost of living.
Yes you are right to be angry op.

5dollah · 09/03/2026 21:25

You're absolutely right, OP. I'm furious too.

MidnightPatrol · 09/03/2026 21:27

It’s relentless isn’t it.

My water bill has doubled in the space of three years.

We wonder why the economy is in such poor shape - so many people have little left once the bills are paid now.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/03/2026 21:36

You are not alone op, not at all.

Helen1625 · 09/03/2026 21:45

You are not alone. It's infuriating. Especially as I've been reading that we could have lower energy bills if we started drilling in the North Sea. Instead, Norway drills, and we buy it back from them at a high rate. There is so much more that could be done to help us, instead they keep bleeding us dry! (Can always find money for some foreign cause or other though!!) Apparently, not content with the rise in fuel costs at the pumps, Ms Reeves is going to increase fuel duty too! I'm sick to the back teeth of working just to keep giving it away on every increasing bloody bills.

EmeraldRoulette · 09/03/2026 21:51

@Helen1625 i'm glad you mentioned that because I found myself wondering why we stopped drilling in the north Sea

When I looked it up, I was amazed at the madness of it. Food Bills have been getting madder and madder for ages.

I knew there would be an inflation problem after lockdown - but I did not think we would still be here in 2026 - and in 2020, I didn't realise how badly we were being treated by our own governments in terms of the economy.

Kindling1970 · 09/03/2026 21:56

I don’t know how some people will cope with higher prices. It’s frightening.

Peacefulllll · 09/03/2026 21:59

Im okay at the moment, but i do live alone no pets, kids or a man.
But i do wonder how some cope with the above.

ohfourfoxache · 09/03/2026 22:04

What’s the threshold for a “crisis”?

I only ask because it seems that we’re already in a CoL crisis and have been for a considerable time

(I’m not being arsey btw - im genuinely curious)

BeAvidHiker · 09/03/2026 22:18

Perhaps you want to direct your ire at successive UK governments with incompetent idiots cosplaying at running the country.

We do not produce our be own energy. We have destroyed our oil industry in pursuit of idiotic net 0 in favour of importing oil.

We have not invested in any infrastructure to promote economy.

we have lying corrupt politicians who lie on their CVs and then get into power and destroy the economy.

We borrow billions every month to pay benefits to pay people who don’t want to work.

We tax our high earners to death who then leave the country while we import low skilled people who are net drain on public services.

Global shocks happen. The people to blame are the absolute crooks in power who are setting fire to this country.

Idiotic net 0.

Anononony · 09/03/2026 22:20

The oil price itself does come, shame the rest doesn't follow!

HopSpringsEternal · 09/03/2026 22:23

Wish the had invested vested heavily in green energy over the last 30 years. Instead we were bought off by oil and gas companies. We would be so much more autonomous.

I thought the latest is they were looking at reducing it?

EmeraldRoulette · 09/03/2026 22:24

@BeAvidHiker honestly I didn't mention net zero because someone is bound to come along and ask "don't you care about the environment?" I'm hoping people now understand the reality of the situation, but I don't actually know if these messages are filtering through yet on MN.

lavendarwillow · 09/03/2026 22:25

It is absurdly hypocritical to buy oil from overseas. It’s time we started becoming efficient again.

Unfortunately these people are blinded by ideology. Feeling all virtuous on a little island producing less than 1% of global emissions and freezing away all winter. Thinking that that they are somehow morally superior by inflicting misery on themselves. While China and the US burn fossil fuel for fun.

user1497787065 · 09/03/2026 22:27

I live rurally and have oil central heating. 1000litres of oil in January was £588 today I was quoted £1376.

godlikeAI · 09/03/2026 22:45

Every single person should take an honest look at why we’re here - banking crisis, bailed out by the government, at the expense of tax payers, austerity, covid, Iran war - wealth inequality not seen for over a hundred years.

we have a planet that we could all live on quite happily, if it weren’t for naked greed.

it absolutely is infuriating. You’re not alone in thinking that.

MapleSyrupOnToas · 09/03/2026 22:49

Net Zero and Ed Miliband are to blame. Drill the North Sea FFS.

I wish they would filter through. Net zero is going to wreck the economy and what's the point anyway when you see giant oil depots going up in flames and smoke over in Iran as well as massive amounts of debris. Yet here we all are worrying about putting potato peelings in the right garbage bag so they won't contribute to greenhouse gases. Insanity.

Happyjoe · 09/03/2026 22:56

And.. then you hear about MP's giving themselves a 5% pay rise. Utterly tone deaf.

Never a truer word said !

lazyarse123 · 09/03/2026 23:05

The greedy big businesses aren't helping. Fuel has gone up near us at least 3 times in the last week and it can't all be new stock. Greedy bastards cashing in.
