Of course I understand that the ME war is going to have an impact on oil prices & that will get passed onto the already struggling families; but when things stabilise again & maybe oil prices reset the greedy corporatez never pass this saving back to customers fo they. They just think as we've got used to these new higher prices we'll just keep them there. This thought has given me the rage most of today!
Just needed to vent somewhere, thanks if you listened..

There is nothing crazy about net zero and using renewable energy.

What is totally nuts is continuing to use fossil fuel (because it's cheaper Confused).

When we have totally and utterly fucked this planet - which is pretty much now - thinking of all the fires and heatwaves out of control in the summer etc THAT will affect food prices and food sources. Likewise flooding in other parts of the world.

I thought the latest is they were looking at reducing it?

It was, until this kicked off in the middle east.

I reserved a house the day a few weeks ago and had another appt with mortgage advisor last week, and he said fortunately the rate we discussed was the same as the war in middle east could cause interest rates to rise. Really hope not as I may need to get a 2nd job if I can’t secure a promotion as i’m a single income house. Thankfully 2 of my 3 kids are adults and financially independent now, but still one living at home. Thankfully she cooks her own meals and just ingredients and she isn’t a snacker as cost of food is mad. It is such a worry.

My non frugal food shop is probably around 10% of my net pay. Massively less compared to what my Grandparents spent post war .

We got used to having it so easy until recently and this next increase is going to hit hard.

Housing costs are much higher though which leaves less for food.

And.. then you hear about MP's giving themselves a 5% pay rise. Utterly tone deaf.

Well they also have bills to pay

activetimeathime · 10/03/2026 05:53

Diesel here has gone from £1.42 a litre last week to just under £1.61 this week. I got oil for our heating and hot water late February at 59p per litre. It’s now sitting at around £1.38 a litre. I thought I’d save oil by using our immersion heater for hot water only that doubled my electricity usage for the day.

Unfortunately these people are blinded by ideology. Feeling all virtuous on a little island producing less than 1% of global emissions and freezing away all winter. Thinking that that they are somehow morally superior by inflicting misery on themselves. While China and the US burn fossil fuel for fun.

well what's the point anyway ? Trump and Co are merrily destroying the planet and environment around us whilst we are expected to do everything we can as individuals to save it. Oh and guess whose mates will be the ones getting rich rebuilding the damage( if there is anything left to salvage of course) when it settles down again . It wont be the average Joe but the billionaire class getting yet more wealthy at the expense of everyone else once more.

Agreed with this. Just what is the point? The only people who are able to make a measurable difference - the mega rich and huge companies - couldn't give a toss about the environment of the world. So whats the point in the rest of us trying to do our bit? It's so bloody depressing. We are truly doomed :(

Why are fuel prices going up already when this fuel at the pumps was purchased pre Iran…. It’s a con.

PhuckTrump · 10/03/2026 06:15

godlikeAI · 09/03/2026 22:45

Every single person should take an honest look at why we’re here - banking crisis, bailed out by the government, at the expense of tax payers, austerity, covid, Iran war - wealth inequality not seen for over a hundred years.

we have a planet that we could all live on quite happily, if it weren’t for naked greed.

it absolutely is infuriating. You’re not alone in thinking that.

Also…Covid price hikes which companies didn’t reduce after everything settled.

And Russia’s attack on Ukraine, which threw energy prices and vegetable oil/wheat prices up.

cloudtreecarpet · 10/03/2026 06:19

Wouldn't it be amazing if just for once the huge companies could offer to absorb some of the price rises before passing them on to consumers?

I haven't forgotten British Gas declaring their highest profits ever just after the Ukraine energy crisis.
But their first thoughts are always for their share holders and their bonuses, never the consumers.
Supermarkets are exactly the same & no doubt will up prices & then still declare huge profits.
It's disgusting but it's ingrained in "the system"

I live rurally and have oil central heating. 1000litres of oil in January was £588 today I was quoted £1376.

I don't have oil thank goodness but it is way, way past time something was done about this- its discriminatory that there is an energy price cap for gas and electricity but still nothing controlling heating oil, especially is it mainly affects rural communities. I know RR has starting bleating about something needs to be done but it should have been done years ago.

To me its no different to racketeering and black market behaviour in WW2. They should not be allowed to increase prices on current stock and I can't believe they get away with it.

Bikenutz · 10/03/2026 06:25

DeftGoldHedgehog · 10/03/2026 03:13

People like Trump and Farage are disaster capitalists and war mongers who don't want strong and stable economies with redistribution of wealth and more equal societies. They thrive on lurching from crisis to crisis and disaster capitalism funneling more money from the average person into the pockets of their rich mates.

Yup. Prices plunge in the city, their mates Hoover up the bargain assets and make a killing when they go back up in price.

coronafiona · 10/03/2026 06:31

No pay rise for the 5th year in a row for my other half. Minimal pay rises for me. But food and bills have doubled. I’m fed up with working for no fun. We can’t afford the cinema, a holiday, bowling… anything. And no we aren’t in low paid jobs we are middle income.

tamade · 10/03/2026 06:35

DeftGoldHedgehog · 10/03/2026 03:16

The cost of fuel and energy affects the cost of everything else though especially food as it is more expensive to produce and transport. Plus after Brexit, lots of produce is now subject to tax and additional cost. Thanks a bunch for that.

Yes, I agree with you we need energy to make and move everything so the effect of fuel prices snowballs the cost of everything. It is a good point.

But the idea I was trying to put over in my post was that most people feel the CoL at the supermarket checkout because that is when they realise the shop is going to take a big old bite out of the bank balance. The bite is big for two reasons - stuff is expensive (absolute terms) and the balance is depleted so the spend is relatively large. It is basically the end of the month syndrome, except for many people once bills have been paid the day after payday the end of the month feeling kicks in around the 7th.

CleanQueen123 · 10/03/2026 06:36

It's terrifying. I'm very close to needing to move back in with family because I can't afford to privately rent anymore, and I pay less than market rent. It's incredibly demoralising that as a professional in my mid-30s who earns what most would consider to be a reasonable amount of money I can't afford to keep a roof over mine and my child's heads. I've spent this month having a financial overhaul, stripping it back to only paying bills without any treats and there's still no money left in the run up to pay day.

ohfourfoxache · 09/03/2026 22:04

What’s the threshold for a “crisis”?

I only ask because it seems that we’re already in a CoL crisis and have been for a considerable time

(I’m not being arsey btw - im genuinely curious)

We have too many people who are not contributing to the economy.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdrx4d37dnjo

And this governement can't address the issue because their back benchers won't support any benefit cuts for a start.

Userxyd · 10/03/2026 06:38

Powerful men acting like toddlers throwing toys and shouting insults - fire fury and death on Iran - Trump is abhorrent although I support some support of their opposition. Writing messages to Israel on a missile equally pathetic and childish from Iran. They are killing innocent people and acting like it’s just for kicks.

purpleygrey · 10/03/2026 06:39

It’s relentless. We are eating very basic meals because the cost is ridiculous. I honestly don’t know what we would do if they go up any more.

we are already stretched so thin.

I do agree. Instead they are giving More money to those adding nothing to society.

dayslikethese1 · 10/03/2026 06:41

It's worrying and with AI I fear it'll get worse too with more folks being automated out of the job market.

dayslikethese1 · 10/03/2026 06:43

I resent water price rises esp given the scandal with all the sewage dumping! We're literally paying them to tip shit on us.

That’s capitalism.

I would support windfall taxes to claw back the spoils of profiteering

BeAvidHiker · 09/03/2026 22:19

Idiotic net 0.

I don't underatand how you think net zero/green is idiotic. If we had invested properly in net zero with minimal reliance on oil or gas we would not be in this situation.
Can you explain why that would be an issue?

Quite.... the ASDA near me hiked fuel by over 6p per litre on the very day the attacks started.

This ASDA filling station is currently 5p per litre MORE than the nearby independent and 4p more than the Tesco.

Its just profiteering and we need a regulatory system that prevents this.
