To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

YANBU to think it would be a good thing for us all to reduce our energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.

BUT ... shouldn't we all be doing those things anyway, if we can? And some won't be able to - e.g., if they have medical conditions and need their homes to be warm, or if they have no option but to drive to earn a living.

ThereWillBeSun · 09/03/2026 17:11

I have… that’s why we have two electric cars, a solar array and battery storage.

Like the school run parents who get their cars out even though they are within walking distance?

You’ve phrased that as if it’s some sort of gotcha against the OP, when there’s nothing to suggest she wouldn’t agree with you on it.

Stay in your own lane.

The effects of fossil fuel use are literally everybody’s lane. I hope you don’t have kids or grandkids if your opinion is anything like what you’re showing here.

Swiftie1878 · 09/03/2026 17:15

No. Carry on with your life.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/03/2026 17:16

It’s not a choice that many people will have to consider it is inevitable that the cost of driving will be unaffordable for many.
Heating oil has skyrocketed in price too.

JenniferBooth · 09/03/2026 17:17

Friend of mine who has been waiting for a knee replacenent for seven years on the NHS has no choice but to use his car Both knees are fucked now due to him having to put more pressure on the other one to avoid putting pressure on the bad one. He now cant walk even short distances. Actions have consequences or in this case non action

tutugogo · 09/03/2026 17:17

Some of us wouldn’t dream of wasting fuel in the first place, it’s right to minimise it where you can out if choice but not guilt people into reducing below what they need, most consumption is not by a person keeping their heating on at 19 rather than 18 (mine is set at 18) and many of us would love to leave our cars at home but the council cancelled the bus in March 2020, it’s a 2.5 hour walk to work or a very unsafe bike ride over twisting hills with 3 fatal accidents in 5 years.

Assistledoggo · 09/03/2026 17:18

I’m already as frugal as I can be. I won’t be doing any more as im disabled and lack of heat really scuppers me. So no. Thank you but no.

Exactly

itsthetea · 09/03/2026 17:19

To be fair if petrol prices go up average speed comes down and that can reduce petrol use quite a lot

having coped with COL lately I am surprised people could turn heating down without ill effects - it’s already down

I work from home. Don’t fly. Get my shopping delivered. What more would you have me do?

CraftyNavySeal · 09/03/2026 17:20

Yes, let’s accelerate nuclear power so we don’t need fossil fuels anymore.

Also the market does that already, people use less oil when it costs more.

Maybe the government and employers could take this more seriously though. Our village is overrun with cars at drop off time and maybe 50% of parents have to drive their DC here, because the neighbouring village schools have closed and this now is their catchment area school. Employers insisting on people coming into the office unnecessarily. Cuts to bus and train services meaning people have no choice but to drive. In my village there used to be a bus once an hour, now there is a bus to the local town at 9am and a returning one at 5pm.

I am walking distance to school. However, I also have to go to work. If I walked I would not be able to get to work on time. What do you suggest I do?

No its not a fucking gotcha Its because i live right opposite a school and see it all the time
And there was nothing to suggest that i didnt live near a school if we are playing that particular game

Goldfsh · 09/03/2026 17:23

I think this the wrong question.

I think we should be asking "AIBU to think that everyone in the UK should be campaigning for sufficient green energy to heat our homes and provide us with sufficient transport?"

Other countries don't think twice about heat/air con and transport. Because it is cheap and secure.

We need energy security, not endless workarounds because our energy is expensive and insecure.

Assistledoggo · 09/03/2026 17:23

@Noras could you please tell me what I’m meant to do. Thank you.

Illbethereinaminute · 09/03/2026 17:23

Some people don't have a choice.

If I drove the kids to school and back I would make an extra £80 a month at work because I could get there earlier and leave later.

So sometimes I drive both ways, sometimes one way to make life easier and some days I walk both ways.

Luckily we can suck up the loss of £80 a month especially as I do like walking to get me the exercise but if we couldn't I would drive both ways all the time.

Although my car is electric so it doesn't really count in this particular scenario...

Dannexe · 09/03/2026 17:24

We might not have much choice. Not much is getting through at the moment.

I'm glad we have electric cars and solar.

darkchocolatebounty · 09/03/2026 17:24

Oh fuck off.

Bristolandlazy · 09/03/2026 17:24

I drive as little as I can already, I can afford to waste fuel.
