To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

I notice a distinct ignorance attitude between Ireland and the UK.

Ireland is far more progressive regarding the Travelling Community. You must employ them and allow them into schools over there. Because of that, they are productive members of society and judgement is far less over there. The vast majority of Irish people would never dream of using disgusting terms as a descriptor towards them as the TC are robustly protected under the Equality Act.

Lets skip across to the UK shall we?...the Travelling Community are renouned for causing trouble. Why? Because they are persecuted for who they are. There is a distinct prejudice against them. Terms such as "Pikeys" are a common term, even amongst 'educated' British people.

Typical of Britain and just only serves to highlight that Ireland is a far more progressive country, and not just in that respect, but multiple respects.

I think there’s an awful lot of discrimination still in Ireland regarding travellers.
Educated people wouldn’t usually use discriminatory language, though some would, but they wouldn’t buy next to a halting site either.

Shall we put them in a hole and be done with it? Would that make you happy?

You seem intelligent enough to know that that is not what anyone wants. People want to be able to coexist alongside their neighbours in a civilised manner, that’s all.

Can you not see from all of the first hand, lived experience offered in this thread that there are genuine issues with antisocial behaviour from your community? That it’s not actually racism, or tarring everyone with the same brush etc. it’s literal facts that have been proven time and time again.

It must be very difficult for you to read the feedback on this thread about members of your community, but you can’t just tar everyone on this thread as racist, there must be some introspection by the travelling community at some point, some acknowledgment that their behaviours are not compatible with civilised society?

I'm an averagely educated British person and I've never heard the term "Pikeys" in my life.

Of course there is, by a minority few.

In the UK, it is a large majority, due to their bigoted culture.

The UK are a conservative nation, in general

Ireland, on the whole is a more prosperous country, with better systems. Poverty breeds crime in the UK, and with that social injustice, comes a susceptability to buy into the toxic conservative media, which perpetuates right wing bigoted views.

I was talking about her quote on them be far away from tax payers properties. Like there aren’t going to be paying tax on where they live. What make you think your a better tax payer than those tax payers?

With respect, what rock have you been living under?

You have never heard the term "pikeys", "gypos" or any other term in the UK to refer to the travelling community.

Sure, in Ireland, a vast minority use it. But difference with Irish people is, they are quick to speak up to the bigoted person and correct them on their use of language.

In addition, courts slam the discrimination in Ireland and force commercial premises to pay hefty fines if they refuse them entry.

Well I certainly don’t think I’m a ‘better tax payer’, but to be honest, of the many, many travelling families I know, the vast majority were given houses by the council and live on benefits. Very few of them are paying tax to any great degree, and the few I know who were, or I thought they were as they were building big houses, buying high end cars etc., they’ve all been raided now and CAB have taken their assets as they were deemed the proceeds of crime.

Oh hi fan 👋🏼

although this is getting creepy 😬

Cyclebabble · 09/03/2026 11:15

We have a traveller site at the edge of the village. It was purchased originally as a field. As is common, the travellers then put a stables on the field then caravans and then other facilities. The council let them stay. They are truly awful neighbours. The children have used to catapults to take out windows and in once case a cat's eye. Lots of things have been stolen from garages/outbuildings. The male on the group is currently serving a significant sentence for holding up a taxi at gunpoint and the two families living there are generally abusive. We live a fair distance from this site and it still has an impact. I would certainly never buy a house anywhere closer.

How are my comments bigoted? They are my literal lived, real life experiences of growing up amongst the travelling community.

Please point out what exactly I have said that is bigoted.

No rock, that I'm aware. Just not a term I've heard.

I have heard "gypos" though.

The fact that you need me to dumb it down for you as to why you are a bigot just reinforces the fact that your EQ is questionable, at best.

I'm from Cork and I can honestly say this is absolute bollocks.

We don't put up with anti-social behaviour in Ireland any more than we do in England.

That has nothing to do with prejudice and everything to do with expecting decent behaviour from everyone, no matter who they are.

Simplesbest · 09/03/2026 11:21

Hard no, you won't even be able to resell if you hate it. Or if you do you'll have to massively reduce the price.

I have to say, I'd heard of the Garden of Eden but I didn't realise it was just across the Irish Sea

I never said you did put up with anti social behaviour?

Perhaps have another read after your little hissy fit and see what I meant.

In short...Ireland are far more tolerant and embracing of the TC than the UK, where historically, Irish people on the whole were persecuted by the British.

In short, it is true.

Ireland has robust protection in place for the TC, which has a definitive cause of action when laws are breached.

And I guess you fell asleep during Irish history in school when it was being taught that Ireland was invaded and oppressed by Britain and the subsequent persecution that followed?

None of that is true? I must get onto the PHD educated historians then who have historic artefacts, to tell them they were filling our heads with nonsense then.
