Also, I guess a good question might also be:
“what are the basic public facilities and services like overall in EU countries eg quality of life markers as compared to UK?” and of course they vary depending on the place, but in very general terms, taking France, Germany, Belgium as examples;
~ public transport is heavily subsidised and integrated and generally efficient
~ social care actually functions reasonably well although is facing staff shortages as in uk
~ social housing functions well but varies from 17% in France to only 3% Germany
~largely free or heavily subsidised education including tertiary education (this is very important in terms of social inclusion and equal opportunity no matter where you start out in life)
~ universal, mandatory healthcare provided through subsidized statutory social health insurance systems from good to excellent
~ most towns have good, subsidised public sports facilities
~ and a good public space/hall to hire cheaply for family and community events
~great advanced, highly regulated recycling and rubbish collection systems
~they each have robust, heavily funded police forces with strong personnel levels.
In other words basic, decent civility for the general population and needs of the individual citizen have not either been ignored or been placed second to commercial imperatives, as they have in many sectors of the UK.
I think the only area where the UK does slightly better is in its provision of accessible public green spaces thanks to its historically protected municipal parks and residential gardens.
