Starters idiotic 40k Immigration scheme

Wtf... maybe I'm not understanding this correctly. If you didn't get asylum you get given 40k IF YOU LEAVE? And if you don't? Do you still get to stay jn hotels etc.? I'm sick to the eyeballs of this weak government's lack of taking a strong stance. Every other European country is doing better than us. I'm not saying asylum should never happen - but we are bending over backwards while our own people are suffering. My DF mother paid taxes and worked all her life ... she has to sell her beloved small family home to pay for her care- but we'll give money and what else to illegals ? This country's decisions is making my blood boil. Point based immigration where we add to jobs that we struggle to find local talent I've got zero issue with - its fair. It's time we wake up - and uv you think IABU explain why plse ....

Well, for a start, the proposal is not 40k. It’s 10k.

Whammyammy · 08/03/2026 09:21

Its going to be a huge magnet for asylum seekers to the UK. It's a win win, either get granted asylum or a big bucket of cash to leave with.

Only £10k gosh how awful!!

THisbackwithavengeance · 08/03/2026 09:23

You leave with the £10k in your pocket and then return next week on a small boat or through ROI. 🤷‍♂️

Per person for a maximum of four people, so a family of four = 40k?

I don’t understand how they will police all the people that don’t even need asylum but come and apply for it simply to get the £40k…….?

surely this make the UK a VERY attractive please to seek asylum regardless of if your application is successful or not?

or am I missing something admittedly I haven’t done any research into the subject……..

Yes, but await the larger family discrimination cries!

Obviously, they won’t be able to return - that will be one of the conditions. And 10k is vastly cheaper than housing and feeding someone. So it’s much cheaper.

Well, for a start, the proposal is not 40k. It’s 10k.

It's £10k per person but the person is allowed to pick up to three family members who will also receive £10k each

pokemoan · 08/03/2026 09:29

My DF mother paid taxes and worked all her life ... she has to sell her beloved small family home to pay for her care

It’s unlikely that she paid enough tax for that care though.

Somersetlady · 08/03/2026 09:29

Apologies poor spelling (my laziness) and poor wifi (on a plane) so multiple of same post.

i see it’s for people who have applied and appealed and been refused asylum. So it’s the people deemed not to meed asylum we are paying to go when they should be deported anyway!?

that beggars belief.

apparently based on a trial in Denmark.

Most failed asylum seekers are not families, though. As we hear so often.

Dollyparton3 · 08/03/2026 09:30

With all due respect, who do you think should pay for your mother’s care due to her living to an old age? Me? Several other mumsnetters? Of course it should come from the remaining estate.

Using this as a topic of division from people fleeing their war torn country or unsafe persecution isn’t really the way to celebrate your mother a) being lucky enough to have an asset with the value to pay for their care and B) being blessed with a mother in her old age. The two are totally unrelated. But way to go making it all about you /your inheritance

But they have already failed to qualify for asylum to continue to be housed and clothed???

pokemoan · 08/03/2026 09:31

Do I know if this will work? No.

Has anything else worked? No

Is there a cheap or easy solution? No

What's to stop them coming straight back and demanding accommodation and food again? They can even throw their passport in the Channel and say they are a different person to get the £40k again

Hardly. People aren't deported to Calais. They are taken back to the country they are from.

NotnowMildrid · 08/03/2026 09:32

This government needs its head testing.

Won’t they just keep coming back with false passports?

These are failed asylum seekers - they're not fleeing war torn countries.

The vast majority of the boat people are young men coming from safe countries who know they can make a lot of money from the British state

BeAvidHiker · 08/03/2026 09:33

This is what your taxes are paying for. Go figure.

But the gaslighters will tell you there is no problem. It won’t work anymore.

Erin1975 · 08/03/2026 09:33

Somersetlady · 08/03/2026 09:31

They will have the right to appeal the decision. That process can take months because we don't employ enough people to deal with the process in a timely manner.

JazzyAmbs · 08/03/2026 09:33

It’s insane. Even if it were to work in theory for the majority, then we are so incompetent in this country that for any returners we not be able to monitor it and will keep paying the same people. For a family of four it’s more than a lot of people earn. It just shows how much disdain the current government has for the taxpayer in this country. At some point the taxpayer is going to say enough is enough and there won’t be enough tax to give away to all these chancers.

It takes less than two weeks for a returned failed asylum seeker to get back to Calais

But if they properly identify these people with biometrics and a key part is them NOT returning £10k is very little.

Processing anyone +accommodation+food and medical support.... costs LOADS.

£10k is a bargain
