I need a fresh start - does your village have a train station and a school? That's all I need - tell me where in the uk you are, what you love about it and if I can buy a luxurious private not overlooked house there?! 😃

YABU - this does not exist
YANBU - tell me where!!

Haslemere in Surrey is lovely. Probably classed more as a town but not that big really and has everything you’d need.

Very posh in places and very hilly everywhere!

Brockenhurst, New Forest

Try Botley in Hampshire. Train line to London, good primary school, independent pubs/shops etc

Suhbataar · 05/03/2026 23:34

What about Freshford in the Avon Valley? Nice school, lovely village. Bath 10 minutes by train and Bristol on the same line The delightful Bradford on Avon 10 minutes the other way. Some seriously nice houses for sale just outside of the village but this one is in the village and walkable to the train swww.rightmove.co.uk/properties/171240533#/?channel=RES_BUY

I'd like to join in with recommendations but since you've already turned your nose up at Yorkshire I'm guessing the North East is completely off the table.

tell me where these places are? Although maybe not if blighted. I know they exist, that's why I'm asking where they are.
Good thought about the post office @YourWinter , a shop would also be very useful.

You’ll probably find that the PO is in the shop. And both will close next year.

1 primary school

Quite a few shops / social things

Comes with a spare holiday apartment as part of it

Half of Suffolk meets your criteria.

HugoThatway · 05/03/2026 23:44

You wouldn't want to live there @HoppityBun . You'd be roped into the pantomime, the cricket team, the flower and produce show, and you'd never be allowed to go further than Felpersham.

HugoThatway · 06/03/2026 00:21

@clary, thank you. It probably floated down the Am.

Is it Lefty enough for the OP?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/03/2026 07:31

Bradford on Avon is very pretty near Bath and Bristol. Never lived there but had/have family friends who live there.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/03/2026 07:31

Rye is also nice but not sure re schools.

ShetlandishMum · 06/03/2026 07:34

We were next to one of the small Exeter train stations for years. It was wonderful. Southwest.

muddyford · 06/03/2026 07:37

Starcross, a few miles south of Exeter on the Exe estuary, is on the main railway line and has a station. Also a primary school, little Spar shop and a pub, 'buses and a summer time ferry across the estuary to Exmouth.

Cantfinishanything · 06/03/2026 07:38

Yatton or Banwell

MayaKovskaya · 06/03/2026 07:40

What a gorgeous house and look at the views!
I'd just spend hours looking out of the window.

Londonrach1 · 06/03/2026 08:00

Yes the next village does. Mine has a school only. Lots and lots of villages have both school and train station. I know of two within 5 minutes drive from me. However you need to see how regular the trains and where they go too. In our case Birmingham...next village once an hour, the villages after 4 times an now and to London and Birmingham

waterrat · 06/03/2026 08:03

Lewes. 20 mins to Brighton. An hour to London. Punches above it's weight for a small place....

Lots of live music nice shops etc

One large secondary and a few primary schools.

grannycake · 06/03/2026 08:07

I'm on the edge of Gower Peninsula We have 2 comprehensive schools and 2 primaries (both English and Welsh speaking). A train station with direct trains to Manchester and West Wales and 10 mins on train to Swansea for other destinations
