I need a fresh start - does your village have a train station and a school? That's all I need - tell me where in the uk you are, what you love about it and if I can buy a luxurious private not overlooked house there?! 😃

YABU - this does not exist
YANBU - tell me where!!

Mine isn’t a village so no but there’s a lovely one near my home town in Yorkshire called Pannal.

Population: 6,000
Train station: Every 30 mins to Leeds or York so well connected
Schools: Yes primary school, secondary is near Harrogate

House prices: Detached circa £700k.

FriendlyGreenAlien · 06/03/2026 09:13

You could almost call where I live a village. We don’t have a duck pond but I am close to the primary school, the corner shop/post office counter, the hairdresser and the library. We have a branch line station that is 10 minutes to our nearest big regional interchange. 15 minutes walk in a couple of directions and you’re in areas that feel like countryside. The secondary school is 10 minutes walk away.

£1M will buy you a big detached house here, maybe even something hundreds of years old (there are a handful) but you will still have neighbours.

We are about an hour from London.

Happyhippy99 · 06/03/2026 09:29

Kingham in the Cotswolds. Excellent primary school, fantastic nearby Chipong Norton school for secondary and village station train to London.,

I'd like to join in with recommendations but since you've already turned your nose up at Yorkshire I'm guessing the North East is completely off the table.

I used to live in the North East actually!

I just love that we have so much in our village with all the shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers etc and we're surrounded by countryside but we're also so well connected to so many parts of the country. It's also not overly expensive so you can have a really good standard of living without having to have a crazy salary. The village is relatively wealthy so the high street, pubs, restaurants etc are always busy ☺️

This does sound really wonderful. Im SE at the moment and it's just so pricey!

Yes.
Small town, although smaller than next village. ( locals get upset if called a village ! )
Commuter train to Waterloo just under 1 hour.
Good Secondary and primary school, shops , library.
Lots of green and rivers.
Look down the train tracks from Waterloo in the Salisbury line you will see a couple of places which fit What you want.
Hampshire is quite expensive, but not as bad as Surrey.

gosh in Brora I could buy so much more than down here in the south for a fraction of the price! wonder if dh would go that far!

Brora is lovely, but wouldn’t recommend it based on wanting something a bit more for the kids and dh, the travel down to Inverness would become a serious drag, and it’s even longer on the train (over four hour round trip on the train) if you’re wanting Scotland, a bit closer to Aberdeen or Inverness would get the best of both worlds for you, countryside but also easily accessible to more stuff for kids and dh

We live in a Hamlet, 10 mins walk across the field to a market town which is 12 miles from Oxford and have a train station 2 miles away straight into Marylebone. Amazing bus services into Oxford too. It’s bloody perfect.

Great Bedwyn in Wiltshire

5foot5 · 06/03/2026 10:59

Prestbury in Cheshire?

It has a railway station only a few minutes in to Manchester. Also a village primary school and is walking distance from some good secondary schools - one independent and the other state. I think there is also a private bus service from there to Manchester Grammar.

The village centre is quite nice - shops, restaurants and pubs.

You could get something decent for your budget I think although property prices there are quite steep. I should add I can't afford to live there! But I live nearby and go to it or through it quite often.

Loads of places in Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire that fit the bill. Just look on the train lines to see which villages are served.

I love Prestbury but it is hard to get something decent for £1M. Also the trains are not terribly frequent.

that's a pretty impressive view. I like the idea of Oxford and the cotswolds, sounds really nice

I live very close to this house. It’s a fab part of the uk to live.

Colwall Herefordshire.

On the west of the Malvern Hills. Regular train to Worcester or Hereford. Commutable to Birmingham. Near Ledbury which is a lovely little town or Malvern, also great place to live.

Northumberlandisbest · 06/03/2026 12:32

Morpeth Northumberland. Small market town, not a village. Good schools. On east coast mail line and close to A1. 9 miles from the beach and close to outstanding countryside. Good shops, restaurants and pubs.

We’re in Marple. In a restaurant review eight or 10 years ago, Jay Rayner described Marple as ‘the leafy village where Greater Manchester meets the Peak District’.

The restaurant was Angkor Soul, since renamed Kombuja (sp?) It’s Cambodian, and very good. Otherwise the restaurant scene is mostly gastro pubs, a new Italian that’s doing well and a decent Chinese takeaway. We usually go into Manchester, but we like to cook. We have a charming independent cinema on the High Street.

In terms of what you asked: we actually have two train stations, one being the terminal point of a defunct line. Trains to Manchester take 20-30 min. Two hours from Manchester to London. We have two POs. (One in the hamlet of Marple Bridge) There is ample choice of schools but they are mainly Good rather than Outstanding, FWIW. A number of DC attend independent schools in Manchester and commute by train.

We have at least two GP surgeries. Ours has served us well and been rated Outstanding the last two rounds. Several private dentists, opticians, etc.

Two excellent butchers, a good fishmonger, but the greengrocer is expensive for the quality and the supermarket is ASDA. Tesco on the outskirts.

We are in the lovely older neighbourhood close to Marple Station. I see a semi on Winnington Road and a medium sized detached on Manor Road both STC on Rightmove with asking prices of £700K and £800K. The larger detached homes in the neighbourhood are around your £1M but none are for sale.

We are near a lovely park where a Community Hub with a gym, pool, cafe, NHS Walk In Centre, Community Policing Station, etc (IIRC) is supposed to open this year. Looks like it may happen!

Marple is on the Cheshire Ring of canals and we have some great walks along canals and in the hills from the door.

You can tell I love living here. However a great thing about Britain is that there are many equally wonderful villages!
