I need a fresh start - does your village have a train station and a school? That's all I need - tell me where in the uk you are, what you love about it and if I can buy a luxurious private not overlooked house there?! 😃

YABU - this does not exist
YANBU - tell me where!!

How about east Suffolk? Melton/Woodbridge sort of area? Near the coast, train links, just about commutable to London. Lovely countryside and coastline.

Not sure about prices round there but cheaper than Surrey for sure.

I hadn't considered Suffolk because I feel like it's far from everythwehre, but maybe I'm getting mixed up with norfolk

Probably help if you give a bit more of a vibe of what you like. Are you happy with commuter village? More rural proper or do you want nice coffee, shops and a gastro pub.
Are you a bit rightwing? would be happy to be around that crowd? Or would that turn your stomach? Do you want a middle class village or don't mind a bit rough around the edges (or all the way through?)

this sounds lush - where is it?

Albrighton, Shropshire.

35 minutes on the train to Shrewsbury, 40 minutes on the train to Birmingham, 2 hours on the train to London, 45 minutes' drive to Wales.

Airports within a couple of hours (ish): Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, East Midlands, Luton, Stansted, Bristol. Lots of options!

Duffield is a nice village (I am not a village person but it's a good one if you must). It has two primary schools and a very highly rated secondary school, plus a station (trains south to Derby and north to Matlock) and lots of small shops. Also a frequent bus to Derby. Tho tbf why not just live in Derby. Or Sheffield.

What’s your budget @bowrow? A three-bed semi in Duffers if you can find one is about £400k; a four-bed detached about £500k upwards. I did mention the school, yes?

Other villages on the same line but not as nice include Cromford (pretty but under-resourced), Ambergate, Whatstandwell. Belper is nice but it's not a village. Towards Sheffield you could go for Dronfield, or into the Peaks you could live in Edale or Hope. I wouldn't tho. Duffield is the best shout locally tbh.

Also came on to suggest Duffield!
It’s pricey for the Midlands and therefore solidly posh, but you’d get something very nice for your budget, plus you are on the doorstep of the Derbyshire Dales & Peak district

That's cool. We go to Wales on holiday and this would definitely shorten the drive!

Don't need to commute as work remotely, but like somewhere bigger for the culture and for the kids, I'd like to be middle of nowhere, but DH is much happier somewhere busier, so something where I can see the countryside, but he can 100% get a good coffee and a craft beer!
Not rightwing at all and pretty lefty.

Brockenhurst in Hampshire I think fits thebill

Important stuff! That will rule out loads of places. My friends had a very big shock moving to the countryside. And had to relocate to a more lefty place!

I just love that we have so much in our village with all the shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers etc and we're surrounded by countryside but we're also so well connected to so many parts of the country. It's also not overly expensive so you can have a really good standard of living without having to have a crazy salary. The village is relatively wealthy so the high street, pubs, restaurants etc are always busy ☺️

I live in a village with a train station, a post office and corner shop, a hairdresser, a primary school and two pubs.

This is close by, but I think it's as ugly as fuck! https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/171540341#/?channel=RES_BUY

There are much nicer houses in the village, cheaper, but not as secluded. I love where I live.

That is one ugly house. Plus the hideous grey kitchen! 😱
However, what a gorgeous setting! It's probably worth it for that alone.

PonkyPonky · 05/03/2026 22:21

How about Pewsey? Ticks all your boxes and is surrounded by beautiful countryside

PonkyPonky · 05/03/2026 22:26

Any of Salisburys surrounding villages would suit if your DH wants to city life and you want the country

JustAnotherWhinger · 05/03/2026 22:31

Kingussie in the highlands. Technically on a train line to London, but it’s a long train ride! (though you can do the overnight train).

oh really?! Where I live at the moment I basically always meet people like me, perhaps I'm taking that for granted! If only Rightmove had a filter for this!

Yep, we live in South Cambridgeshire, lovely primary schools and train stations with connections to kings cross in 45 minutes. Villages that fit the bill would be meldreth, shepreth, foxton, Ashwell, Guilden and Steeple Morden. Barrington and Orwell also lovely but you'd have to drive to the station. £1m will get you a nice 4/5 bed family house.

Coffeeisnecessary · 05/03/2026 22:36

Balcombe in west Sussex sounds like it might suit, gorgeous place and a fast train to London/Brighton which is great.

absolutely love an overnight train! although possibly not practical for dinner and drinks meet ups in the city 😂

Not exactly villages but more towns but have you considered Frome or Bradford Upon Avon? Both have great independent businesses and you’re not overly far from Bath/Bristol. Frome is more quirky whereas Bradford Upon Avon has more of a Cotswolds vibe but isn’t in the AONB. Gorgeous scenery all around them and plenty of great coffee!

firefoxx · 05/03/2026 22:37

I’d love to relocate to Glynde or nearby Alfriston (although the latter doesn't have a station) from Brighton… but can’t until kids are older (they’re mid exams).

Yes, but it's also blighted by HS2 and the local housebuilding. We're at risk of being swallowed by the nearby town.

My DC used bus /train to get to secondary school depending which school they went to.

Luckily we're also near a hospital with an A&E, occasionally used by DC or DHL!

Stoke Mandeville??

DancingFerret · 05/03/2026 22:38

Depending on your budget, Bruton, Somerset or Brockenhurst, Hampshire.

I’m in a village in Kent about 6 miles from Sevenoaks. We’ve got a train station, two schools (primary and secondary), doctors, private dentist, two hairdressers, and a Post Office within one of the high street shops. We’ve even got a Costa!

Train is about 50 mins to London and the same the other way to Ashford for coastal connections. About 25 minutes to Bluewater and 45 minutes to Gatwick. Only negative is the bus service but that’s the norm for the local area. It’s really friendly and we love it.

Possibly not 😂

Inverness is a lovely city and the airport is handy, but not practical for regular London jaunts just for dinner (although I have actually gone down on a morning train, went to an evening dinner and then got the sleeper out once 😂)
