Anger at museum for tiktok of staff member

DeepLemonBeaker · 03/03/2026 21:47

DS turned 13 in January and wanted to have a phone with tiktok for Roblox videos with his friends. I'm an ex social worker who was completely reluctant to do this at first but agreed on the promise I get to see his account when asked. The other promise was he never took his phone to bed and it was left downstairs as not to impair his sleep. He agreed, and I've used this time to double check the phone.

In my view he is a child and completely vunerable, I am a bit of an outcast in conversations in work and among some friends for this view, some parents are more casual with a lot more trust but I think I have seen too much to take the chance.

We visited a museum in early Feburary, we only conducted a two hour visit before heading for a meal as the weather was bad (Typical Welsh weather) My DD has taken some interest in some of the stuff there and would like to return and I did enjoy myself although DH & DS were bored s*less.

However one week after this visit my sons account was "following" a man in his 50s who had mulitple videos of himself in a gallery attendants uniform. Some had him dressed with women's hairstyles and talking in a childs voice. No gallery attendant that looked like this on the day of the visit and I am unaware how my DS has stumbled upon this mans page but it has raised questions in my head

I want to send the details on to the Museum and express concern but DH thinks this is a massive overreaction that could harm this mans job. He is correct that there has been no "interaction" between the two and my son blocked the account when asked but I cannot get this out of my head and have questions.

I think I was niave about Tik Tok and did not realise it was built this way. I thought because of the low account age it may have been tailored a bit better. it is always in my mind as a "kids" app as I only heard about it from DS and his friends.

No, it's not a kids app. Don't let your kids on thinking it's some kind of child friendly social media app, as it isn't.
I mean, it can be, depending on what kind of things you like to watch (I get endless silly dance trends and mum type blogs doing skits about kids and school life on my "for you page") or 80s nostalgia music videos. It must know I like my cheese, mine would be classed as child friendly if they got hold of my phone. 😁
Depending on what your kid watches on there, the algorithm will be pushing more and more of the same.
If he's been interacting with museum stuff, or you've been to the museum, it'll "know" and push that content onto the "for you" feed. You don't have to be following any of them on there for stuff to show up, and they're not necessarily following you.
As for the poster that says "call Crimestoppers" - eh? For what?!

But you’re an adult. The boy is not and was given rules on using social media, which he has broken. Because he has followed an account of, what sounds like, a bit of a weirdo.

A man doing museum skits makes him a weirdo? Can someone please for the love of all that is holy tell me what this man has done that might warrant this sort of response.

There's a hugely well known 'creator' that makes videos pretending to be a nursery worker and has made an obscene amount of money from it. I think it's bonkers & have no interest but that doesn't classify her as a weirdo, surely?

Asking a lot of questions about Roblox from this thread as well.

I agree with this but pressure is on all angles as all his friends have it and other parents I speak with in person are more trusting because they have their own rules about screen time. Some monitor and some don't.

DH seems to think it is better we agree and have one we can keep an eye on than him finding a way to have a secret one, kids are sneaky!!

Why do you care what other parents are /aren't doing when it comes to parenting?
I must just be harsh (or tight as my kids would say lol) as when they were younger I couldn't give a toss if "everyone else is allowed to!"

You really should be.

Im a teacher. The safeguarding i see deal with daily because of tik tok/minecraft/roblox/other social media sh*te is crazy.
At the very best its brain rot at the very first its safeguarding hell.
Neither of my children will ever go near the stuff

I've been avoiding moving him away from his games and the making videos because he is a geeky quiet kid and those are his interests. not like the old days where kids would play the playstation all together in one room. Everything is on the internet now!

Must admit I'm clueless about Roblox too Blush
It's something my kids were never interested in so it's kind of passed me by.
I thought it was some kind of building blocks game?

Dressing as a woman and doing baby voices is a bit weird for a grown man to do as his pastime.

Yes, but as I mentioned earlier there's a grown woman creator with millions of followers pretending to work in a nursery. She dresses as men and women and while I think its a mad thing to do in my free time, I wouldn't consider calling Crimestoppers. Or Miss Rachel and her baby voice? Is she worthy of police attention?

I'm not sure what's different in this scenario that borders on needing to report someone to their employer, or accuse them of a crime?

I never said anything about calling the police or crime stoppers? I just said her kid has followed someone who I would say was a bit of a weirdo and he should choose the content he follows better.

But I also said the guy hasn’t done anything wrong and the OP is the one out of order for wanting to go to his employer to insinuate that he has groomed her son when the guy has done nothing.

This is for OP to sort with her son and to discuss the sort of videos he wastes time on.

No you didn't, which is why I asked the OP directly what her safety concern was, but she's avoided the question so many times and you've answered for her, so I could only reply to you!

Please do. I am quite a relaxed parent however Roblox and Tiktok I will not budge on.
I was very clear when my son got a phone, there are parent controls on it, we reserve the right to look at messages, internet history (we have safe filter on) at any time and we must always know his password..it's not worth the risk.

Lots of different games, some dubious. There has been updates to try and stop underage people chatting with adults and what not, but its not great and kids tend to find ways around it

One of my reasons for stopping the frequent reading of mumsnet and making the post.

My main concern was how they became "connected" on tiktok in the first place. I will admit to finding the videos weird and mildly unsettling. They are not comedic or like scripted funny videos but him talking straight into the camera often using a childlike voice or making gestures. If this is what tiktok content is like in general, I am not thinking of talking to the Museum anymore but will be considering asking DS to delete his account.

Without context or seeing the video, it's impossible to say whether it's inappropriate or not.
Someone keeps popping up on mine dressed as a mum ranting to "school" on the phone when school's ringing up about them being a pain in the arse again 😂
Kind of "Eh?EH?! What you saying my Britney's been up to now?! No. Not having this. BRITNEY! Are you being a little shite again?!"
Things along that line lol. (It's actually really funny, guess you have to "be there" I suppose as the saying goes 😁)

I would not be happy with cross dressing adult men being in contact with 13 year old children. Maybe delete TikTok?

Block building game you are thinking of is minecraft.

I play Roblox, have an account and join in with my kids playing the various games together. Quite enjoy it.

No one has ever attempted to message any of my kids, they only ever said messages themselves to their friends.

DeepLemonBeaker · 05/03/2026 14:54

MmeWorthington · 04/03/2026 09:06

@DeepLemonBeaker please can you clarify exactly what the problem with the video is.

Is it that
The Museum allowed your child to follow the account
That it is an official Museum video and not appropriate in some way
That the man is independently making inappropriate / offensive / harmful videos while wearing a museum uniform

I would be uncomfortable if I employed someone to work with a uniform and they were making videos like this - that may be a very old fashioned view I have.
