Let's be honest here - after decades of defence budget cuts by both the Tories and Labour, even if Starmer did want to the UK to get involved then militarily there's not a lot that the UK could could contribute anyway.

The UK has a total of six F35s at RAF Akrotiri. And quite frankly it is taking the piss that there is zero anti missile or drone defence at Akrotiri. The Iranians can lob what they want at RAF Akrotiri and there is literally nothing to stop them.

Meanwhile Starmer has finally decided to park a Type 45 destroyer off the coast to provide air defence that the air base doesn't have.

Starmer is no Winston Churchill

He's not a racist, colonialist, alcoholic who is happy to let people starve, true enough.

insane theocracy

Have you been keeping up with the news from the US today?

Edited

Is this the Dispensionalism nightmare - that the US military is full of a “Christian” death cult that worships Israel and is deliberately trying to induce world war 3 (starting in Iran) to fulfill the Revelations chapter of the Bible?

You are being rather unfair here. I think Sunak would have done a good job with this as well - primarily because he wasn't Johnson or Truss.

I can't imagine how many ways Johnson would have managed to fuck up a situation like this.

This is also true. Bit fucking rich that several prominent members of the party whining about Starmer's position were part of the government on whose watch that happened.

Last month Iran killed 30,000 of their own people

the October 7th massacre was entirely down to Iran

Iran funds hezzbollah directly

iran directly funds the houthi rebels.

Iran is directly responsible for the killing of several million people in the last couple of years.

fuck Iran. The UK should have been in the first wave of attacks.

more to the point - that turnip Starmer should have KNOWN because it’s his job we would immediately be attacked. And we were. So now we are still hated by Iran and the USA justifiable thinks we are weak idiots. Which we are. It’s an embarrassment of historic proportions.

HMS Dragon is currently in dry dock and it will take a week at least for her to get there. By which time this might be over

why did that turnip Starmer not move Dragon there a week ago? This was pretty heavily telegraphed? Why is he so shit?

The issue as things stand, is whilst Trump would quite like this over with before his trip to China on 31st March, as the biggest oil producer in the world, the US won’t feel any real economic consequences unless oil hits around $120/$125 a barrel and stays there for over 6 months or so.

Europe (including the UK) doesn’t have that luxury - we are very vulnerable to energy price shocks. The markets had priced in an 80% chance of a rate cut at the next BoE meeting, that’s now at less than 50% because of the inflationary pressures of high energy costs. If this drags on, we’re going to be straight back at square one in relation to the cost of living crisis.

littlbrowndog · 03/03/2026 21:26

We have many families and troops at raf Akrotiri on Cyprus

completely unprotected.

why did Starmer not think they would have been attacked ?

Indeed. Whose reports might these be? Are these like the reports that there were WMDs in some sheds in Iraq?

Because he only reacts. He never plans ahead. Despite being at the head of a very large intelligence resource.

absolute muppet.

(also we are very short of ships)

To be fair it was kept low at around 2.2% by both the Tories and Labour since the end of the Cold War.

The lowest it reached was 1.8% under the Tories in 2015.

rememberingthem · 03/03/2026 21:29

judging by the comments on here lots of posters are to blinded by their irrational hatred of Trump to realise that what happened was wholly necessary and our spineless government will be on the weong side of history with this one!

Putting our troops and families at risk

it was really obvious that one of the proxies like hezbolluh would take a punt at the base

but clearly, yes.

Trump may well be a twat but Iran is a thousand times worse.

There's not really any getting round the damage that the previous Tory administrations did. If you want to argue that they should've started from a higher baseline before those cuts, fair enough, but there are still people complaining who were part of governments who had years to do something about it.

Yes, it’s good to see someone in the world having a backbone against the orange buffoon

ChattyCatty25 · 03/03/2026 21:31

This is a good decision to not get involved in this latest horror.

How many times is America and its serfs going to rescue foreigners from evil dictators by bombing the shit out of them?

However, I don’t like Starmer because of his disastrous handling of Ukraine and Russia. Whatever the rights and wrongs, Starmer is risking our annihilation to defend a corner of Ukraine that isn’t any of our concern.

It was 101% certain UK interests would be attacked.

so we should have just let USA use the bases and been, honestly, on the right side of History.

'I assumed the majority of people on this thread just wanted to take the risk that worrying reports of Iran's nuclear progress were inaccurate'.

It's an entirely fair assumption given it'd be inconceivable to oppose thwarting their progress if they are indeed close to capability. It would also be impossible to validate every single comment on this thread, thus assumption is pretty much unavoidable.

MorphingintoMargo · 03/03/2026 21:33

The hard-core anti-Starmer lot will be along soon to pour scorn on the thread, but I agree with you OP.

Trump will have forgotten about it all by this time next week.

Is the UK that vulnerable to energy price shocks when 60% of our electricity generation capacity is renewables?
