Media pushing Starmer to war

Indigosky37 · 03/03/2026 05:32

Daily mails headline is “Keir Starmer accused of hand wringing and pearl clutching” and Kemi Badenoch saying he’s “scared”. Then a comment section full of “he’s a coward” “ he’s a chicken” “incompetent idiot” “an embarrassment”.

So are the media pushing Kier Starmer to take us to war then? Is that what they want, because if he did the headlines would be about how we don’t want a war. The man can’t win. But pushing for war and making out Kier to be weak for not doing it is worrying.

I have a pretty low opinion of him, but as you say this is just the DM beating him with any stick they can find.

FWIW I don't think the war should have happened and I don't think we should be involved now it has. But Trump might have got angry with us if he'd said no about using RAF bases, so there is that.

JoeyHeathertonwhenyoucallmebabyNsoul · 03/03/2026 06:21

Rock and a hard place
The Daily mail comment section is a hoot as usual all the keyboard warriors vying for conflict with all the usual racist comments and Starmers a traitor blah blah blah.
Trump can never be placated .

Fundays12 · 03/03/2026 06:30

They do seem to be doing so. Ita disgraceful behaviour from the daily mail to try drive britain into war. I cannot stand Stammer. He is possibly the most incompetent PM we have ever had but I think he is right in this instance to refuse to go to war.

BelleEpoque27 · 03/03/2026 06:33

It's good for business. They need something to write about, and an extreme situation will drive comments and traffic to their advertising.

It's immoral and disgusting, but the tabloids have never worried about that kind of thing.

LoudSnoringDog · 03/03/2026 06:34

Short memories of the aftermath following Blair taking us into Iraq on a whim (again a the behest of the USA). I don’t agree with Starmer on much but hope he holds his resolve here.
If he does take us into Israel and the USAs war with Iran, you can bet your house he will be hung out to dry once the first UK serviceman/woman is killed in action.

More incompetent than Liz Truss? Or Boris Johnson? Nah.

ImmortalJillyCooper · 03/03/2026 06:39

It would be pretty stupid to be drawn into another Middle East war that might be considered illegal when a previous Labour regime and leader were so strongly castigated for being drawn into an illegal war in the Middle East. It might piss off Trump, but he will be gone soonish (hopefully!) and cosying up to him does not guarantee you any favours anyway!

FOJN · 03/03/2026 06:55

We are going to be overwhelmed with propaganda about this war so I'm sceptical about newspaper headlines and any comments section. It looks like a campaign to manufacture consent. I do not believe that most of the country thinks getting dragged into this war is in the UK's interests. I think media outlets may use the war for political point scoring and will amplify the few voices who think we should get involved. Who publishes the headlines is less important than who encourages them to do so. Who benefits if the UK is dragged into this war? Who might want us to think that if we end up participating we did so reluctantly and because we had no choice?

Goldenbear · 03/03/2026 06:57

They are wrong, typical asinine contrarian writing!

ArticWillow · 03/03/2026 07:00

Media outlets pushing for war should be ostracised by the general public.

Lifelover16 · 03/03/2026 07:01

I don’t think Starmer can be pushed anywhere - too slippery

BendoftheBeginning · 03/03/2026 07:01

These are likely the same people who wanted the Iraq war so very much, then immediately flipped and have called Tony Blair a war criminal ever since.

100%

Agreed. There's absolutely no way that the DM would have posted even a modicum of support had Keir done the opposite of what he's done.

Having read this morning that USA only kicked this off on Saturday because Israel forced their hand, it makes me wonder who's really in control of this entire situation. It sure as hell doesn't look like Trump is. And Keir not committing immediately took even more control from Trump which he clearly didn't like.

BeAvidHiker · 03/03/2026 07:29

Media doesn’t need to push Starmer to do anything. The guy has done about 78,000 u turns in less than two years already. He’s about as strong as a wet paper bag. He’ll give way even if you just look at him with a strong glare. What a pathetic excuse for a leader we have.

Dabralor · 03/03/2026 07:31

The DM is just an ecosystem for whatever opinion drives the most clicks.
Research shows that negativity generates more traction online, so they push a negative opinions about Kier Starmer. Whatever he does, it will be spun negatively.

That is what makes the DM money. It explains why they are negative about so many things:

immigration
Harry and Meghan
the new Green Party MP
people on benefits

Sartre · 03/03/2026 07:32

I don’t particularly like Starmer but I’m glad he’s the leader during this period and not someone insane like Johnson or Farage…

Whatafustercluck · 03/03/2026 07:36

It's not really surprising when you consider that they're right wing media and Badenoch and Farage were spoiling for war yesterday when KS took questions in Parliament.

I don't like the Iranian regime one bit, but echoes of Iraq are strong with this one. Basically the US have said "do what we want or we'll bomb you". And they have. Probably unlawfully again. I'd trust KS as a former lawyer on this one. And those calling him the most incompetent PM ever have extraordinarily short memories. As a population, we do seem to repeatedly suffer from collective amnesia. And Stockholm Syndrome.

kirinm · 03/03/2026 07:36

For him to stand up and say the war is illegal and there is no plan is impressive. The media have been anti-Starmer from day 1. I think the dying days of the Tory party and the chaos is what the press really want for reporting purposes. They are desperate for there to be a coup against him.

kirinm · 03/03/2026 07:38

Not only is there no plan but the US have admitted that they joined in because Israel told them they were going to bomb Iran. Jesus Christ. Thank goodness we don’t have the right wing populists in.

Edited

The electorate: "Listen to us and change decisions when faced with new evidence/ strength of public opinion".

Also the electorate: "Stop listening to us and doing u turns on your decisions!"

The man literally cannot win.

Isekaied · 03/03/2026 07:40

Starmers stance on this issue is correct.

Isekaied · 03/03/2026 07:41

Also don't understand why all this pressure on us to go to war.

Why aren't other leaders in Europe under the same pressure.

We are not US's lapdogs.

Mischance · 03/03/2026 07:42

Well quite ......

At least we now have a sensible and thoughtful PM with a good grasp of the law, all of which he will bring to bear on this situation.

You do not have to agree with all his policies but it is good to know that neither Johnsin nor Truss are at the helm at this critical moment.

MushMonster · 03/03/2026 07:44

According to Rubio, this is not even Trump's intended war. He said that US attacked because they knew of Israel's attack and they knew Iran would target US assets directly, so they thought better to strike first. This sounds, yet again, like it is Netanyahu who leads the action and Trump follows. It looks like Trump was making progress on the negotiations, and then Netanyahu decided to attack, so Trump attacked. It makes Trump look like a weak, aimless puppet. I think Trump will face quite a lot of trouble back at home if this goes on for long.
Starmer does not want to do the same to UK. And I think he is right. For the time being. War has a way to change from day to day.
