Caused a scene in home bargains today. Was I out of line?

This happened earlier today, and now I'm questioning if I overacted.

I went into home bargains with my mum. When we got to the til, a woman around my age (30’s) served us. My mum asked for a bag, and the woman just said “we don’t have any". Very blunt. I could see big bags on the next til, but she clearly couldn’t be bothered to even check. After my mum paid, she didn’t offer a receipt or even say please or thank you. My mum was unsure if the payment went through as the woman didn’t give her a receipt or say thanks, so she asked if it was okay, and the woman just gave her a wierd look and said, "yeah." It’s hard to describe, but she looked at her like she was a piece of shit basically.

My mum isn’t the type to confront anyone, but I could see she felt uncomfortable, so I said, "there’s no need to be rude." The woman just looked at me and carried on. No apology or anything. There were two staff members by the exit, so as I walked by, I said, "tell your staff to get some manners." They asked which one, and I just pointed to the woman and walked away.

Loads of people looking at us, and my mum was just trying to hush me along. She did thank me afterwards for sticking up for her though. It doesn’t sound that bad when I write it down, but she really had an attitude. I know that we all have off days, but if you hate your job that much, maybe it’s time to find a new one…

This is the most English thing I've ever read! 😂! Definitely not a scene, don't give it another thought!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 01/03/2026 22:05

Were you particularly loud? From what you’ve said, just saying to the cashier there was no need to be rude, and then speaking to the staff by the door, I wouldn’t call that making a scene, and I’m not sure why loads of people would even notice and be looking. Were you shouting?

MellowJello77 · 01/03/2026 22:05

Doesn’t sound like you made a scene at all.

pilates · 01/03/2026 22:05

I wouldn’t call that a scene. She was rude and you complained.

Isekaied · 01/03/2026 22:06

That is not a scene.

Just feedback

WingBingo · 01/03/2026 22:07

Did you actually make a scene?

YourWinter · 01/03/2026 22:08

If you could see bags on a nearby checkout surely you could have got one? Better still, take one or more from home, keep some in the car, nylon bags fold up to the size of a tissue.

Lots of stores don’t automatically give a receipt but it’s easy enough to ask for one, as long as yours was the last transaction they can still print one. In my local HB some staff always print one, with one (man) I always ask for a receipt while I’m paying.

There’s no excuse for rudeness from staff, nor towards them.

youalright · 01/03/2026 22:09

I thought you was going to say you was throwing things and screaming and staff had to pin you down while waiting for the police. You sound like you acted like any other unhappy customer 🤣🤣

kittyfairy66 · 01/03/2026 22:11

That was like me the other day in the co op I walked in then walked back towards fo grab a basket by the front door the staff member held her arms out like I was a shoplifter .... I walked back to where I was going the drinks bought 9 bottles as it was on cashback while I was arguing with her I paid for each item seperate I said to her I wanna bloody watch me it's the co op for f sake lol

HeddaGarbled · 01/03/2026 22:12

It’s just such a useless way of dealing with the situation: a passive aggressive remark to two random staff members who weren’t the perpetrators nor in positions of seniority. You were being nasty to two entirely innocent members of staff who don’t have the authority to do anything.

You could have insisted on being given a bag and a receipt. You could have gone to the customer service desk and complained. You could have emailed a complaint later. But no, you just mouthed off at sitting ducks. It’s bullying.

Lobsterteapot · 01/03/2026 22:12

I am disappointed by the “scene”

I didn't shout at the woman, but I did get a little louder, likely because I was annoyed, when I talked to the other staff. Then, when they asked who it was, I pointed at her and said, "that one." The exit is right by the tills, and there were people in line as well as others leaving at the same time as us, so they definitely heard me and started looking.

Crikey, if you think that's a scene you'd have to wear a disguise to go out with me! When I've been set off on a few occasions I've gone full on John Cleese as Basil Fawlty!

UncannyFanny · 01/03/2026 22:19

Well you’re unreasonable for going to Home Bargains. Live love laugh hun! Oxoxox!

MasterBeth · 01/03/2026 22:19

Worst scene ever.

I get what you're saying about the bags, but by the time I noticed them, my mum had already paid and was planning to just carry everything herself.

She really didn’t care about the receipt. I only mentioned it because she wasn’t sure if the transaction went through since she didn’t offer her one or say thank you. When she asked the woman, she just looked at her like she was stupid and said, "yeah."

Like I said it’s hard to explain, but she definitely had an attitude.

Bullying 😂😂😂
She noted that the cashier was rude, which she was, in a passing remark on her way out. I think you need to look up the definition of bullying.

I think they were managers.

I doubt if the two staff members by the exit had any seniority or influence on recruitment.

ETA cross post. However if you were that bothered you'd have complained properly and ensured that they were managers.

Edited

They asked me who the staff member was, so I assumed they were in a senior role or something. But yes I agree, always best to check.

whynotwhatknot · 01/03/2026 22:25

sounds fair enough i would have tried to find a manager though to complain to

gototogo · 01/03/2026 22:25

Home bargains (our branch at least) specialise in moody grumpy staff, and yes they resist giving you a receipt even if you ask for one (I shop for work) - last week the shop assistant asked why did I want I receipt? Had to get a manager to run me one off which made me late. I only go there because it’s cheap for certain branded items like washing up liquid and I can’t get people to use Lidl own brand!
