Caused a scene in home bargains today. Was I out of line?

This happened earlier today, and now I'm questioning if I overacted.

I went into home bargains with my mum. When we got to the til, a woman around my age (30’s) served us. My mum asked for a bag, and the woman just said “we don’t have any". Very blunt. I could see big bags on the next til, but she clearly couldn’t be bothered to even check. After my mum paid, she didn’t offer a receipt or even say please or thank you. My mum was unsure if the payment went through as the woman didn’t give her a receipt or say thanks, so she asked if it was okay, and the woman just gave her a wierd look and said, "yeah." It’s hard to describe, but she looked at her like she was a piece of shit basically.

My mum isn’t the type to confront anyone, but I could see she felt uncomfortable, so I said, "there’s no need to be rude." The woman just looked at me and carried on. No apology or anything. There were two staff members by the exit, so as I walked by, I said, "tell your staff to get some manners." They asked which one, and I just pointed to the woman and walked away.

Loads of people looking at us, and my mum was just trying to hush me along. She did thank me afterwards for sticking up for her though. It doesn’t sound that bad when I write it down, but she really had an attitude. I know that we all have off days, but if you hate your job that much, maybe it’s time to find a new one…

How disappointing! I was looking forward to hearing about a real scrum in the aisles. Instead it was more of a British tut. Oh well!

Breadcat24 · 01/03/2026 22:40

In answer to d not go to home bargains-to be fair they do very good food for wild birds, which is what I buy
The staff at ours are always nice, think you must have got a grumpy trainee,
I even get talks about my allotment and whether the birds are eating a lot of fat balls.
I swear I am not a doddery lady that looks like i need the attention , I go after the gym.

flightyfighter · 01/03/2026 22:42

B&M seem to have a policy of not letting you see the transactions go through the till on a customer facing screen. The till assistant can see though. I often wonder if I've been charged correctly but they always give me a receipt. There are any number of people working in service industries like hospitality or retail who really shouldn't do that job!

FlicaBonnyLittleStar · 01/03/2026 22:55

Must say I once bought some of the best ever clementines in our local Home Bargains, they were as good as the really fresh Costco ones, and better than M&S the same week. !

ilovesooty · 01/03/2026 22:57

I buy banana flavoured Horlicks there sometimes. The last time I went a lovely member of staff helped me find some buried away at the back of a shelf.

Well you’re unreasonable for going to Home Bargains. Live love laugh hun! Oxoxox!

What's wrong with Home Bargains? Not everyone who shops there buys the blingy chav stuff.

transitvanwoes · 01/03/2026 23:02

I've noticed of late loads of cashiers do not say please or thank you, is that not in the training manual anymore? I must make a comment scene next time.

Love a Home Bargains tbh. Can't say I buy a lot of the home stuff but I definitely buy toiletries, cleaning stuff, snacks, toys etc and I do enjoy their seasonal ranges. The kids pyjamas and baby vests actually wash really well too!

Mt563 · 01/03/2026 23:03

It's a minor interaction in your day. Maybe the cashier didn't feel all live laugh love. Sometimes it's hard to plaster on a smile. I've been in customer facing work the day I found out a family member died. I'd just let it go unless you notice its a regular pattern and you think it's worth a written complaint.

Is it not B&M that sells the chavvy bling? I've never seen a Live Love Laugh sign in Home Bargains, nor a mirrored toothbrush holder.

Exactly. We get Corsodyl mouthwash because it's £5 in Morrisons and £3.50 in HB. You'd be daft not too. Bird food and snacks too. The staff in ours always ask if you want a receipt. There is no need to be rude to customers even if you're having a bad day as no doubt will be mentioned at some point. I worked in retail and always managed a please and thank you.

HeddaGarbled · 01/03/2026 23:09

Bullying 😂😂😂
She noted that the cashier was rude, which she was, in a passing remark on her way out. I think you need to look up the definition of bullying

It is bullying to strop at random retail/service staff for things outside their control, knowing that they just have to take it. Anyone who works customer facing has to put up with this shit all day long and it’s soul-destroying.

If you’ve got a complaint, make it properly to the right people.

There is some stuff that's a bit weird. Last time we went there were rabbit decorations for outside and they were about 4 foot tall. Don't know why the hell you'd want one of those.

Pyjamatimenow · 01/03/2026 23:12

I caused a scene outside home and bargain once. This was not a scene 😊

DiscoBeat · 01/03/2026 23:15

I try to see the best of people and maybe she was struggling through a recent bereavement, had an issue with a bad partner, anything. I would assume it's not a very well paid job. Just be glad if you don't feel equally grumpy!

I've been through some shit over the past couple of years, had some bad days, but I still wasn’t rude to people at work 🤷🏼‍♀️

I always find HB staff to be nice and helpful and friendlier than supermarket staff so she does sound rude in comparison.

I don't think I've ever noticed whether supermarket cashiers say please and thank you. I wouldn't expect them to

Wow so you don't use your manners with them then?
I always make a point of saying hello and asking how their day is going. I get a much better response by treating them as people not machines.
If they're rude, it's on them and I find it offensive
I use my pleases and thankyous and then they respond the same (usually)

@kittyfairy66 can give fab advice on making a scene 😂

WinterFaye2 · 01/03/2026 23:45

Gosh Op, you did good for sticking up for your mum, sounds so unnecessarily rude but this definitely isn’t a scene.

I had a lady ram her trolley into me in the range a few weeks ago, I saw her coming but couldn’t move in time. She tutted and eye rolled - at me!!

So I asked if she was ok. She said you type are always on your phone (I’d just checked the time) so I called her rude. What followed was a bit of a shouting match between both of us. I said F*k off a lot she called me a b*ch. she said kiss my arse, I said no thanks I can smell it from here etc.

Everyone was watching, her husband seemed to be trying to disappear into the plates isle.

I hope she still thinks about it. It was definitely worth shouting back at her, I’m hoping it makes her act her age more next time she considers doing the same.
