Caused a scene in home bargains today. Was I out of line?

This happened earlier today, and now I'm questioning if I overacted.

I went into home bargains with my mum. When we got to the til, a woman around my age (30’s) served us. My mum asked for a bag, and the woman just said “we don’t have any". Very blunt. I could see big bags on the next til, but she clearly couldn’t be bothered to even check. After my mum paid, she didn’t offer a receipt or even say please or thank you. My mum was unsure if the payment went through as the woman didn’t give her a receipt or say thanks, so she asked if it was okay, and the woman just gave her a wierd look and said, "yeah." It’s hard to describe, but she looked at her like she was a piece of shit basically.

My mum isn’t the type to confront anyone, but I could see she felt uncomfortable, so I said, "there’s no need to be rude." The woman just looked at me and carried on. No apology or anything. There were two staff members by the exit, so as I walked by, I said, "tell your staff to get some manners." They asked which one, and I just pointed to the woman and walked away.

Loads of people looking at us, and my mum was just trying to hush me along. She did thank me afterwards for sticking up for her though. It doesn’t sound that bad when I write it down, but she really had an attitude. I know that we all have off days, but if you hate your job that much, maybe it’s time to find a new one…

Here I was all raring for a big scene and I can tell you I have never been so disappointed.

DreamTheMoors · 02/03/2026 03:07

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!

SheSaidHummingbird · 02/03/2026 03:25

@WinterFaye2 Bloody hell. I hope you reported her for assault?

mathanxiety · 02/03/2026 05:45

They should always ask you if you want a receipt.

They should also make sure their checkout is stocked with bags.

Both of those items are part of the cashier's job.

You were right to complain. I would have gone to the customer service desk to make my complaint.

Worst scene ever.

Worst non scene..

itgetsthehoseagain · 02/03/2026 06:43

Ignore the posters saying that this scene wasn’t dramatic enough for their spicy tastes, OP - we know it’s little exchanges like this that can shake our day! My husband is a tightly-wound manners-alarm and would have gone off at her.

MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform · 02/03/2026 06:57

It wasn't a scene but it obviously affected you and your Mum negatively

I think you might have done the right thing , however.....

A few months ago I was in my local Home Bargains and the young lad on the till was acting very similarly to the way you describe, @dramaticornot

I was gearing up to "have a few words" and my late 20s daughter nudged me and shook her head. When we got outside she said "Mum, it's obvious he's got severe mental health issues. That's why I wanted you to keep quiet"

Honestly? It wasn't obvious to me, but he was very strange and very rude imo. I'm glad that my daughter intervened and I'm glad I didn't say anything because if he does have MH issues THAT severe, I don't want to be the person who tips him over

That incident has certainly made me think when I encounter shyte customer service

Well you’re unreasonable for going to Home Bargains. Live love laugh hun! Oxoxox!

Home Bargains is an excellent store.

keepswimming38 · 02/03/2026 07:08

Ha ha I thought you had really made a scene. Instead you made one comment! Bless!

MardyMillylala · 02/03/2026 00:36

I think you 100% did the right thing in giving feedback to the other members of staff! My sister worked for HB for 10 years & management most certainly wouldn't be amused by staff acting like she did! For what its worth 99% off the staff I deal with in HB are lovely & friendly always ask if you want a bag & always offer a reciept

Them random colleagues aint gonna grass their mate up they will just slag op off

KnowtheAnswer · 02/03/2026 07:15

I think you could have maybe explained more eloquently to the staff at the door or feedback to a manager than "tell your staff to get some managers" as they probably won't take that seriously. If you really want to complain ask to speak to a manager or something.

KarminaBurana · 02/03/2026 07:20

Did you raise an eyebrow?
Go on an anger management course, you crazy lady! 😉

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/03/2026 07:33

Follow up with a complaint by email OP. There are lots of rude cashiers at the moment and they’re not all recently bereaved!

Peacexbliss · 02/03/2026 19:20

So you said a few words to someone, thats not making a scene op.
Move on.

Jamesblonde2 · 02/03/2026 19:30

She sounds awful OP. Service with a smile seems to have passed her by and landed up her bloody arse. I am
not a complainer but being so rude would cause me to have spoken to the manager. What an absolute specimen.

Tuesdayschild50 · 02/03/2026 19:47

No scene ... I'd be the same bad day or not manners cost nothing .
I'd of said something can't stand people like this no basic manners .

whereisitnow · 02/03/2026 20:24

HeddaGarbled · 01/03/2026 22:12

It’s just such a useless way of dealing with the situation: a passive aggressive remark to two random staff members who weren’t the perpetrators nor in positions of seniority. You were being nasty to two entirely innocent members of staff who don’t have the authority to do anything.

You could have insisted on being given a bag and a receipt. You could have gone to the customer service desk and complained. You could have emailed a complaint later. But no, you just mouthed off at sitting ducks. It’s bullying.

Such a useless way to offer feedback, too.

pineapplecrushed · 02/03/2026 22:19

dramaticornot · 01/03/2026 22:20

I get what you're saying about the bags, but by the time I noticed them, my mum had already paid and was planning to just carry everything herself.

She really didn’t care about the receipt. I only mentioned it because she wasn’t sure if the transaction went through since she didn’t offer her one or say thank you. When she asked the woman, she just looked at her like she was stupid and said, "yeah."

Like I said it’s hard to explain, but she definitely had an attitude.

Why are you passive aggressively lecturing the OP about bringing a bag? The customer has asked for a bag, it isn't for the cashier to decide they don't need one, and then be lazy about getting one. I usually bring my own bag but every once in a while I just forget or get caught without one.

Any cashier I've encountered has offered a receipt. Yet again, you blame the customer for not asking. Please don't ever get a job in customer service.

pineapplecrushed · 02/03/2026 22:24

HeddaGarbled · 01/03/2026 23:09

Bullying 😂😂😂
She noted that the cashier was rude, which she was, in a passing remark on her way out. I think you need to look up the definition of bullying

It is bullying to strop at random retail/service staff for things outside their control, knowing that they just have to take it. Anyone who works customer facing has to put up with this shit all day long and it’s soul-destroying.

If you’ve got a complaint, make it properly to the right people.

No, it isn't. Bullying is repetitive and targeted harassment. Get a dictionary, and a backbone.

HeddaGarbled · 02/03/2026 22:47

Get a dictionary, and a backbone

Get lost

I am disappointed by the “scene”

So am I

Was hoping for an “and then everyone clapped” type story
