What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

Rocco is a totally normal Italian name.
As an English teacher, I feel for all the kids called Eric, Gerald, Sheila, Arthur, Romeo, Julie etc

Querious · 02/03/2026 00:23

Also Laurie, Ramona, Ottilie & I do know someone who changed their name by deed poll to Larch (they’re an ecologist)

BallaMoarBallaBeg · 02/03/2026 00:25

I wanted to call my son Juan (the Manx pronunciation) but he was born and raised in the south of England, so I was vetoed!

(It’s sort of JOO-un / JOO-an in case anyone’s wondering.)

VoltaireMittyDream · 02/03/2026 00:34

There was a Disco in my kid’s class

Putneydad7 · 02/03/2026 00:37

My first born was called Cillian, in 2005 there were only 10 babies named Cillian in England and Wales.
When he went to primary school, there were 11 other boys in his class, one of whom was called "Cillian"!
So, no matter how rare or unusual you think it is....

The first three sound perfectly normal to me and I live in a small E.Mids market town. And Larch makes me think of Monty Python!

Elliot is a female doctor in scrubs.

And the actor who plays her (cant remember her name) has aged so well. No surgery, just naturally ageing and still beautiful. Watch the new series!

Yes! They are releasing 2 eps at a time, hopefully a week apart! Next two are due on Thursday if I am right. I got a bit "sweaty eyed" in parts...... fair warning!

I have a friend and her sister is very alternative. The 'kids' are now in their 30s I have slightly changed the names because they are so out there, but kept to the spirit so to speak. One is Finbar Wrnklebottom Da Vinchi surname. The other one is Sqirrel, someother literal random word then surname. Neither talk to her now and live a very long way away. Not all down to the name but.....
The type of bottom is worse than wrinkle!

I know someone with a Rocco. No Italian heritage from either parent whatsoever. Their siblings are Halo and Hendrix Jimmy. I thought the original Hendrix spells his name Jimi.

Good answer? Now that's not unusual, it's stupid and unfair to the child and I'm surprised the registrar allowed it.

Shall we just start taking the piss out of non English names now? These threads always descend into casual racism with a nice touch of classism. It does show how thick a lot of posters are, when they claim Hebrew names are made up. Or don't understand why the Black African-Americans rejected George, Charlotte etc and created their own versions.

I don’t see any of the things you’ve mentioned on this thread. Not everything’s a criticism and if they were mentioned, they’d be an observation. What’s wrong with that?

Kickinthenostalgia · 02/03/2026 06:31

I work with a Flynn 😄

GalileoFigaro · 02/03/2026 06:55

There's a Damaris in my little cousin's class.

Mine are full of Matildas, Jemimas, Arrabellas, and then there’s Isis.

I follow an American “influencer” (don’t judge me) who recently named her son Graham Alan. She probably has no clue (nor would care) that this would be amusing in the UK in this day and age.

Of course.
