What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

Ours aren’t crazy but we have a Dax, Tarquin, Tatiana and a Leonard.

arlequin · 01/03/2026 23:21

Wolfred, Saxon, Misty

FloofBunny · 01/03/2026 23:21

Are there any Julias, or is that out of fashion now? I've always thought that Julia is such a nice name.

And any Juliets? I like that, too.

There was a boy called Blue in the year below me at school - might be more common for girls now with Blue Ivy but this was Glasgow in the mid-90s!

My DS is 4 and there’s a wee boy called Allan in his nursery.

There was a boy called blue a few years below me at school. This was south lanarkshire.

Also my dd2 is going to be going to school with a penelope which I think is a lovely name.

It IS a cow's name, though. So is Daisy!

Enid Blyton has a lot to answer for.

The sister in What Katy Did was Clover. It’s pretty!

It’s my DD’s middle name (under 35).

My DD's too. There was at least one in her year who had it as a first name- now teenagers. I love it, so classy.

Of these, Kai, Nancy and Evelyn (often shortened to Evie with Evelyn for the birth certificate) are all very standard baby names for the last 15 years.

I'm in Ireland and they're not that common, I've only known one Kai since birth and he's 7 now and there's another Kai in his class.

fruitfly3 · 01/03/2026 23:31

On another note, if you are looking for names, look for things that are 70th or less popular on the ONS list. I have a DS whose name is (was when he was born) around 75th most popular. He’s the only one in either of our two primary schools locally. My DD’s name was around 55th most popularly and there are two of them (one in each school). Names that we have a lot of dublicates of aren’t that common other than William, Oliver, Josh and Sophie. There tends to be one or two of most other names. There are loads of names that end in ‘ie’ think Alfie, Marnie, Annie, Mollie, Jamie, Edie, Albie etc.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 01/03/2026 23:32

Ok, well Kai was number 72 on last year’s UK baby names list (and this is a UK-based site). Just because you’re not familiar with it doesn’t mean it’s not pretty ordinary.

TheBirdintheCave · 01/03/2026 23:35

In my son’s class I think his name, Gilbert, is the rarest in terms of the European names in the class. There are plenty of children in the class with names I haven’t heard of (multicultural school) but I’ve no idea how popular/common they are so can’t really compare with them.

FiveMetresUp · 01/03/2026 23:37

Friends of ours have a Sealoa (see-LOW-ah). The dad is a sailor and Sealoa is a nautical term. It means 'sea level over all' or something like that.

Yes! Clover was a top contender for my daughter’s name as I loved the book character.

The one that stood out to me was Rachel
You don't often hear that on under 35s!

I know three primary school Rachels. And a newborn where my sister lives. It’s a classic name

mrlistersgelfbride · 01/03/2026 23:42

Little girl in DDs swimming is called Elliott. Never heard it before for a girl, but I think it’s nice.

Yes there’s a Rachel in our school, and it was one of the names on our list, too. Definitely in classic territory with the likes of Emma and Charlotte which are fairly ageless.

SpongeKnobNoPants · 01/03/2026 23:59

Boy, white British - Divan (spelt and pronounced exactly the same as the bed)
